However, now that the world is hyperconnected, the digital experience has become a new universal language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c90% of teachers in the United Kingdom have used some kind of <strong>educational technology<\/strong> \u2014which they had never used before\u2014 and would recommend it to a colleague,\u201d says <strong>Rose Luckin<\/strong> from the Institute of Education at University College London and director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.educateventures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EDUCATE<\/a>, a center in London for startups in educational technology (EdTech).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The expert tends <strong>to compare AI to opening the \u201cblack box\u201d of learning<\/strong>. Even though it\u2019s a technology that can help make sense of data, how can we protect privacy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This question raises further questions, and EdTech experts discuss them during an interview for<em><strong> Tec<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>Science<\/em><\/strong> at the International Conference on Educational Innovation (CIIE for its initials in Spanish).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Artificial intelligence will never surpass human intelligence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI gets a lot of negative publicity, especially from science fiction movies. \u201cBut this technology will never surpass human intelligence because ours is much more complex,\u201d says Luckin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The systems we have now are smart, but in much more specific ways. For example, an autonomous vehicle can\u2019t play chess, and a chess engine can\u2019t drive a car. AI is very specific in its application, she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we program machines, the most difficult part is getting them to do the things we take for granted, society\u2019s unwritten rules,\u201d she says. For example, they can\u2019t handle interpersonal relationships the way we handle them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI isn\u2019t good at developing deep and meaningful relationships with other humans, and relationships are very important for delivering <strong>quality messages in education<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-135213 size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecreview.tec.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artificial-intelligence-and-education.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tecreview.tec.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/artificial-intelligence-and-education.png\" alt=\"artificial intelligence and education\" class=\"wp-image-135213\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>\u201cAI isn\u2019t going to replace anyone, it will instead augment and improve education,\u201d says Luckin. (Photo: Zoom screenshot)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What can AI improve?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is how it\u2019ll never replace us but will improve certain aspects. \u201cIt\u2019s good for <strong>reliable processing of large amounts of information<\/strong>, something that humans have a hard time with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Avi Warshavsky<\/strong>, founder and CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindcet.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MindCET<\/a> EdTech Innovation Center and member of the board of directors at the Israeli Center for Educational Technology, gives a further example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAI can be used very well for language learning because the machine isn\u2019t judging, and it\u2019s a great way to learn. It\u2019s a system of <strong>dialog without judgment<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What will happen to our data?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is data-driven. It uses data to analyze, solve problems, identify patterns, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step in explaining to people what will happen to their data is \u201cempowering them. We need to educate them, help them understand what AI is, why it needs data, and what it can do with it,\u201d explains Warshavsky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That way, it will be easier for them to decide if they want their information to be used. This is known as <strong>the ethical application of artificial intelligence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are many questions. He warns that EdTech specialists need to ask themselves very carefully what they\u2019re <strong>accumulating data<\/strong> for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, every time researcher Luckin decides to work with data, she runs her decision by an <strong>ethics committee<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, in 2018, Luckin and Anthony Seldon founded the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buckingham.ac.uk\/research-the-institute-for-ethical-ai-in-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Institute for Ethical Artificial Intelligence in Education<\/a> in the UK, so that laws are respected, and an agreement regarding data protection exists between Europe and the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the solutions they\u2019ve applied is to program AI to<strong> learn behaviors anonymously<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Incorporating AI into educational technology raises ethical questions: What will happen to the data?
