\u201cThe pandemic has shown us that the world goes at twice the speed we imagined,\u201d says Juan Freire<\/strong>, Vice Rector for Innovation and Transformation at Tecmilenio University<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going forward, Freire sees education as being hybrid and personalized<\/strong>, with certain automated processes making use of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, it\u2019ll be digital, but it\u2019ll pry people away from their screens. \u201cJust because it\u2019s online, doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re connected all day long, it means you have to learn actively,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also believes students should be at the center of the equation in order for them to obtain active learning<\/strong>. In an interview with Tec Review<\/strong><\/em>, he gives details about the future of teaching and the new role of educators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hybrid-flexible education<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Freire<\/a> has already begun work on the hybrid and flexible component. \u201cThat means it will always have in-person and online elements, which will be combined in different ways depending on people\u2019s needs and objectives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Vice Rector for Innovation and Transformation at Tecmilenio University<\/strong>, presence will continue to be a very important asset for liaising with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge for universities is to design educational programs that give people the flexibility to choose. \u201cOur utopia is personalization<\/strong> and we\u2019re already working on that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He gives an example: kids who dedicate all their time to studying and are available to go to campus six hours a day aren\u2019t the same as adults who work and only have a few, scattered hours a day for studying, who might be able to get to campus on a Saturday, or who can only go one afternoon a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUniversities have to be able to design appropriate experiences for those people.\u201d This is what Freire refers to as \u201cplacing students at the center.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The model must allow millions of people to personalize learning without it implying an excessive workload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s necessary to understand education as a digital service<\/strong>.\u201d For Freire it can be explained with a well-known case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uber is considered a digital service even though it actually provides an in-person service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe same thing is happening here. The educational process can take place on campus, in a physical space, but education itself is a digital service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artificial intelligence and data science<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Freire has co-founded 10 companies and startups<\/strong> dedicated to environmental management, education, technology and design, and strategy and innovation consulting. And his experience tells him that \u201cData is now and the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Universities and the entire education process generate data that, up to now, hasn\u2019t been used further for administrative management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cData is the new oil<\/strong>. It\u2019s the new foundation on which you\u2019re going to develop intelligence, and that intelligence is going to allow you to innovate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the case of Tecmilenio University, they\u2019ve already figured out how to exploit data to increase process efficiency, i.e. to be able to reach more people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And to improve the educational experience itself, they\u2019re looking for data to inform them what the experience is like in real time, if people are learning, if they\u2019re satisfied, so as to be able to intervene immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The education expert predicts that certain teacher roles will also change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCertain teacher roles are going to be replaced by algorithms<\/strong>, and that might sound scary, but I don\u2019t see it as something negative. I see it as a chance to automate processes and free up time to focus on what really adds value.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Educators will be 360. They\u2019ll have new functions and perhaps the least important will be the traditional role of transmitter of knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a new role is arising, the role of mentor, who helps you ask good questions without giving you the answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The search for learning experiences<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Juan Freire is co-founder of Teamlabs<\/a>, a company dedicated to developing laboratories and learning experiences<\/strong> that is part of the Mondragon Team Academy international network of entrepreneurial education<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He defines learning experiences as designs that place learners at the center without forgetting learning objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the digital world, user experience is everything, and in education, it\u2019s no different,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Freire, \u201cThe experience is part of the result<\/strong>.\u201d And it works according to simple logic. If you\u2019re treated well in hospital, you\u2019ll get better quicker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freire suggests that universities should work with a service design mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, he challenged them to develop online education<\/strong> that gets people off screens. \u201cWhich means you have to solve problems, challenges, develop projects, and primarily, work collaboratively with others,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is active learning based on passion and commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the biggest flaws in schools in Latin America is that people don\u2019t know how to work as a team, \u201cWe have to stop doing that and make the most of online communities as channels to reaching real-life situations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In that sense, Freire explains that in the future, campuses will cease to be a collection of classrooms, and will become spaces for work and community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
