Carolina Rodr\u00edguez Garza, also known as \u201cmujer cohete\u201d (rocket woman),\u201d fell in love with the Universe when she was a child.<\/strong> This romance began while accompanying her father to water the Serrano chili fields at night in Tamaulipas and Nuevo Le\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe advantage of living in a small town was that there was no light pollution and the sky looked impressive. I watched it from my dad\u2019s truck for hours,\u201d she said in an interview for the Medusas of Science Program broadcast by Ciudadana 660 AM<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, everything changed one day when the heat was unbearable, and Carolina\u2019s family decided to sleep outside to cool off. While they were looking at the sky, her dad asked her if she knew that the Earth was moving.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt really shocked me,\u201d she says. She couldn\u2019t believe it nor understand it. Why didn\u2019t she feel it? She never stopped wondering about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAstrophysics was the only way I could find answers<\/strong>.\u201d Rodr\u00edguez Garza is the first astrophysicist to be the director of the Engineering Physics degree at the Monterrey campus<\/a> of Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is also the co-author of the first radio astronomy article in affiliation with the Tec<\/strong>, published in The Astronomical Journal <\/a>on the discovery of maser emission from water molecules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liftoff for the \u201crocket woman\u201d on social media<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are approximately 200 astronomers in Mexico, according to the \u201crocket woman\u2019s\u201d calculations. That means one astronomer to every half million inhabitants. It\u2019s difficult to meet one. That\u2019s why the Director of the Engineering Physics degree at Tec de Monterrey decided to start talking about science on social media.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She started her channel by presenting different Mexican and foreign astrophysicists and astronomers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the content that the teacher shares on her profiles includes interviews, scientific articles, summer courses, as well as physics and astronomy news.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is she called the \u201crocket woman\u201d?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The name \u201crocket woman\u201d was inspired by her high school idol, Eileen Collins. She was the first female to pilot a space shuttle and her colleagues called her \u201cThe Rocket Woman.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carolina became obsessed with her and dreamed of being the Latin American version of this woman. In 2007, Carolina traveled to the NASA facilities to work with Eileen Collins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI remember searching for information about astronauts in a very slow browser. It all seemed unattainable<\/strong>, especially for me, because I saw that they were all men<\/strong>,\u201d <\/em>she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, she talks about science on social media. She discusses diverse topics such as alcohol in space or interviews other STEM women.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe name (\u2018rocket woman\u2019) motivated me and I hope it inspires the community.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought it would be very difficult to become an astrophysicist\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Carolina liked mathematics and physics, she believed that she was not up to the task, but she studied physics and graduated as an astrophysicist in 2019. \u201cI always wanted to study something big, and the universe is big,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She recalls that while in high school one of her friends told her that her brain cells would die if she studied Physics<\/strong>. At the time it affected her, but now it\u2019s part of her motivation to continue disseminating and debunking myths about astronomy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking on new challenges in physics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Recently appointed to the position of IFI <\/strong><\/a>program <\/strong>director, the professor also has a career spanning more than two years <\/strong>at Tec de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was finishing my doctoral studies at UNAM<\/strong> and was looking for a job. An opportunity arose at the Tec\u2019s Morelia campus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut since I\u2019m from Monterrey<\/strong>, I came here and asked if I could work at this campus and the opportunity arose in January 2019,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carolina now aims to share this passion for science with the entire community<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wanted to use my social media profile to share knowledge<\/strong> with the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I was thinking about what to name myself,<\/strong> I thought of the \u201crocket woman.\u201d<\/strong> The name served as motivation for me, and I hope it\u2019ll serve as an inspiration to people<\/strong>,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
