{"id":154782,"date":"2023-02-23T15:24:16","date_gmt":"2023-02-23T15:24:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=154782"},"modified":"2024-12-09T17:56:11","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T23:56:11","slug":"as-long-as-you-enjoy-science-theres-no-stopping-you-rocio-diaz-de-la-garza","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/biotechnology\/as-long-as-you-enjoy-science-theres-no-stopping-you-rocio-diaz-de-la-garza\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cAs long as you enjoy science, nothing can stop you\u201d: Roc\u00edo D\u00edaz de la Garza"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Roc\u00edo Isabel D\u00edaz de la Garza<\/strong>, a researcher and professor at Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey and leader of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/es\/instituto-de-obesidad\/unidad-de-biologia-integrativa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Integrative Biology Unit<\/a> of the recently founded <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/es\/instituto-de-obesidad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Obesity<\/a>, is a clear example that <strong>female scientists are here to stay and break stereotypes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past 15 years, she has created a successful career focused on producing micronutrients in different foods such as papaya, tomato, avocado, and beans, and how they improve metabolism in the human body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"B-Side de la investigadora Roc\u00edo D\u00edaz de la Garza\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OeTy3S7Sa7g?start=71&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She will now combine her knowledge acquired on genes, proteins, and molecules to lead this Integrative Biology Unit and contribute to improving <strong>people\u2019s health and well-being.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with <em><strong>TecScience<\/strong><\/em>, D\u00edaz de la Garza talks about <a>what<\/a> led her to want to become a scientist, reflects on the importance of continuing to close the <a href=\"https:\/\/imco.org.mx\/en-mexico-solo-3-de-cada-10-profesionistas-stem-son-mujeres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gender gap in STEM careers<\/a> [Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics], and tells us why doing science is actually fun and how the idea that scientists are strange and reclusive people is far from reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe go to the supermarket and eat Gansitos. I was the one who won in class, and I liked working hard. One day, my dad asked me: \u201cHey, wouldn\u2019t you like to become a researcher?\u201d That stayed with me. Also, my aunt really impacted me. She was a Chemist, and she was always talking about her work in the lab. I was impressed to see how much she loved it and she was always talking about her experiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also took a summer science program supported by the Mexican Academy of Sciences, which was what really influenced my career. I went to Chihuahua to work on oregano spice, and I fell in love with plants, looking at their compounds, and so on. (Photo: Courtesy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Which are some of your most rewarding moments or your greatest achievements as a scientist?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I was doing my doctoral dissertation, I managed <strong>to increase the amount of folic acid in tomatoes.<\/strong> I spent two years doing lab work, without knowing if it would work. There was an experiment where a little stripe had to appear. If that little stripe showed, it had worked. It was a western blot [a lab technique used to detect the amount of protein in a sample] and it meant that my protein was there and, well, it was a big stripe. That was the result of two years of work. At that point, you\u2019re the only person in the world who knows that. <strong>For a while, you\u2019re the only person on Earth to have that little piece of knowledge<\/strong>, <strong>and it feels amazing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another big moment was when, as a team, we received the <a href=\"https:\/\/conecta.tec.mx\/es\/noticias\/monterrey\/investigacion\/investigadores-del-tec-incrementan-el-valor-nutricional-de-la\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Food Technology Award.<\/a> It was a thesis we did with <strong>Dra. Perla Ramos<\/strong> and <strong>Dra. Carmen Hern\u00e1ndez<\/strong>. We generated the evidence of precisely that discovery: <a href=\"https:\/\/pubag.nal.usda.gov\/catalog\/7535360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">papaya genes <em>turn on<\/em> if you cause them stress at high pressure and this makes them produce more vitamins<\/a>.<br><br><strong><em>Beyond the aims of your research, how does it feel to be a scientist as a human being?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I once said that I have the best job in the world. I consider myself very lucky to do what I enjoy. And I continue to say it: I have one of the best jobs because I train people. In other words, it\u2019s a responsibility but it\u2019s the best thing that can happen to you, to see how your teaching impacts others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best feelings is when you explain something that\u2019s very complex, and the third time [that you explain it], you see a glimmer in their eyes that says: \u201cI get it.\u201d And also helping them discover what their passion is, that\u2019s also part of the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, I\u2019ve been very involved with gender issues in science because STEM fields, engineering fields, are in general careers with<strong> fewer women<\/strong> than other careers, and that\u2019s also been a really enriching experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the fact that great progress has been made around the world to increase their participation in STEM careers and scientific research, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eleconomista.com.mx\/el-empresario\/Secretaria-de-Economia-lanza-iniciativa-para-que-mas-mujeres-cursen-carreras-STEM-20220824-0084.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only 28% of women study engineering<\/a> in Mexico. Out of the 9 million Mexican women who graduated from college in 2021, only 13.5% did so in these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why Roc\u00edo D\u00edaz, together with professors and researchers from Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey\u2019s School of Engineering and Sciences (EIC), such as Luz Mar\u00eda Mart\u00ednez Calder\u00f3n, Ileana Ruiz Cantisani, Vianney Lara Prieto, and Laura Romero Robles, launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/conecta.tec.mx\/es\/noticias\/nacional\/investigacion\/llevan-trabajo-de-ingenieras-y-cientificas-tec-al-plano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Women in Engineering and Sciences (MIC)<\/a> initiative in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the initiative has evolved into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ingeniatecdemonterrey\/?fbclid=IwAR3iEtqmtCulyXbG-qao7QIpoy9RzEvzzPdAFzb87BMjQhZJkJmyym5V_Ro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ingenia: Women in Engineering and Sciences<\/a>, whose aim is to support women and girls who decide to pursue STEM careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What has been your experience as a female scientist?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, very good lately. I\u2019ve spotted certain differences. You notice the details once you\u2019re more deeply involved in the subject, the moments and micro aggressions. This is why I think that closeness is always very important, to talk and to give examples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a phrase, for example, when my dad asked me if I wanted to be a scientist. I have it memorized: We were in a corridor in the house and that was it, and then we each keep on doing what we were doing, but it stayed with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My childhood was an example of equality and that\u2019s why it hit me so hard when I realized that not everyone\u2019s childhood was like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also need continuous support and constant \u201cYes, you can\u201d statements, no matter who it comes from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What would you say to girls and young women who want to be scientists, but have no idea if they can do it, or if it\u2019s a good idea?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One: That is a good idea; science is fun. Two: It\u2019s always important to find the thing that you enjoy. Science allows you to meet many people from many places. It allows you to travel. You work a lot, but it includes a lot of very good things, both professional and personal ones. It\u2019s not about being locked in a laboratory or being the crazy scientist like they show in cartoons. And <strong>as long as you enjoy it, nothing can stop you<\/strong>. Because yes, you can do it, and the conditions right now are much better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roc\u00edo D\u00edaz can\u2019t imagine doing anything else, but that doesn\u2019t mean she doesn\u2019t live a normal human life with feet on the ground. Sometimes, people who don\u2019t do science and who don\u2019t know much about it believe that scientists aren\u2019t interested in the rest of society and live secret lives, detached from those of the general population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What would you say to people who believe that being a scientist is about observing from the sidelines, rejecting the society?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not at all. We go to the supermarket and eat Gansitos. And we also dance Zumba. This job, in academia, also gives you the chance to travel and you have a lot of human contact; we give classes, we go out with colleagues; and yes, we live in houses with dogs or children too. As a scientist, there is a high intellectual demand, but the lifestyle we live is very enriching. You have to write papers, get money for research, and so on. There are lots of things and it involves a lot of contact with other researchers, students, and with society in general. Are we lacking resources for science? Yes, of course. But, the good thing about Mexicans is that we find ways to get things done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing about Mexicans is that we adapt. If resources are suddenly cut off from one side, then you look somewhere else. But, definitely, with the potential we have and the commitment of many scientists in Mexico, if we were to get more funding, we would do much, much
