{"id":155186,"date":"2023-01-31T01:34:52","date_gmt":"2023-01-31T01:34:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=155186"},"modified":"2024-12-10T17:42:42","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T23:42:42","slug":"per-olof-berggren-wants-to-cure-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/per-olof-berggren-wants-to-cure-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"The expert who wants to cure diabetes and will work at The Institute for Obesity Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His work at the Institute will focus on understanding patients\u2019 insulin-producing cells, as well as on an innovative ocular transplant to treat the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/es\/profesores\/emcs\/per-olof-berggren\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Per-Olof Berggren<\/a>, a distinguished professor and researcher of diabetes and metabolic diseases, will work at <strong>Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/en\/institute-obesity-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Obesity Research<\/a>. During his visit to Mexico, he spoke about the work he will be doing at the Center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Institute for Obesity Research aims to produce scientific knowledge; develop therapies, devices, and healthy foods; enable science and technology-based companies to promote metabolic health, and support decision-making for healthier societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Berggren\u2019s work has focused on detailed study and evaluation of the role beta cells play in health and diabetes, as well as a <strong>novel transplantation process to treat the disease<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re very interested in understanding diabetes, but also in curing it, of course. So, we\u2019re going to follow two lines of research,\u201d he says, explaining each of them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tec\u2019s new institute will work with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/espanol\/publicaciones\/diccionarios\/diccionario-cancer\/def\/celula-del-islote-de-langerhans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">beta cells<\/a> that are producing insulin and patient data. \u201cWe want to use these cells to evaluate their function and to understand why the cells don\u2019t work in patients with diabetes,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtu.be\/NS7c1eEk454\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ocular transplants: A new diabetes treatment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, they will be working on an <strong>innovative way to treat diabetes<\/strong>. Insulin-secreting cells will be transplanted into the eye\u2019s anterior chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normally, when transplanting insulin-secreting cells into patients with diabetes, the cells are placed into the liver\u2019s portal system, but it\u2019s not the ideal place because the cells get destroyed very quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, a better site has been found, \u201cWe came up with the idea of using the eye\u2019s anterior chamber as a site for placing the islets or insulin-secreting cells. The cells are surviving very well and are producing insulin. In fact, <strong>you can even cure diabetes in animal models<\/strong>. So now, we want to move from animals to humans,\u201d says the specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Per-Olof Berggren has said that he will remain at <strong>The Institute for Obesity Research<\/strong> for as long as necessary, and a <strong>strategy of four visits per year<\/strong> has been decided upon. When the team has been assembled, they will communicate via Zoom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Institute for Obesity Research: A space that has it all<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What excites the researcher the most is that \u201cthe Tec has many things in the same place: a hospital where you can obtain material, where you can do research, and which has the necessary technology to develop future treatment strategies. That\u2019s very exciting for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Per-Olof Berggren is convinced that all these characteristics will enable the development of new strategies to treat patients with diabetes, using insulin-secreting cells in the eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ll have a way to monitor their function and long-term survival and, ultimately, to see the outcomes of patients who have received the transplant,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that collaborations with transnational programs should continue to be encouraged because they give researchers the opportunity to meet, interact, and discuss. \u201cI think <strong>this is the way to move transnational science forward.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Institute for Obesity Research <\/strong>aims to implement transnational research programs in order to eliminate obstacles such as the distance between basic and clinical science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Berggren also anticipates another challenge. \u201cMedical research must also be able to transfer its research to <strong>biotechnology<\/strong> companies.\u201d He gives an example of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Texas, they have created a model that attempts to encourage researchers to build companies, to interact with companies, to ensure that science can be commercialized through companies in the biotechnology, medicine, and pharmaceutical industries, as well as manufacture new drugs and develop new treatment strategies.
