This is especially serious because CO<sub>2<\/sub> has a massive capacity for global warming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the more CO<sub>2<\/sub> there is in the atmosphere, the greater the planet\u2019s average temperature increases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although global warming is caused by the emission of different polluting gases such as nitrous oxide or methane into the atmosphere, carbon dioxide has risen excessively due to the burning of fossil fuels such as gasoline, natural gas, or coal, which are used in industry and transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReality is that CO<sub>2<\/sub> beats practically all the other greenhouse gases in quantity. That\u2019s why people around the world are more aware of it,\u201d explains researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_82391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Alejandro Montesinos Castellanos<\/strong><\/a>, from the<a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/institute-of-advanced-materials-for-sustainable-manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Institute of Advanced Materials for Sustainable Manufacturing<\/a> at<a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to reduce co2 emissions  CO2<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Under pressure from environmentalist movements and global agreements on the climate emergency, large companies have set out <strong>decarbonization<\/strong> strategies that propose reducing fossil fuels burning in their production processes, thereby reducing their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to the minimum.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon, Apple, Nestl\u00e9, Sony, and Walmart are some of the companies that have published their strategies for reducing, and even eliminating, their emissions of this gas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, studies like the<a href=\"https:\/\/newclimate.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-06\/CorporateClimateResponsibilityMonitor2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor 2022<\/a>, which is conducted by the NewClimate Institute in collaboration with Carbon Market Watch to evaluate the climate strategies of 25 global companies, shows that most of these actions are, in reality, \u201cambiguous pledges\u201d with \u201climited reduction commitments.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strategies for reducing emissions are applied to the energy sector and the <strong>creation of new technologies and renewable energy <\/strong>yet many new technologies are expensive or in preliminary phases, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/net-zero-by-2050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the International Energy Agency (IEA)<\/a> reported back in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, it is not viable for many companies to transform their entire production system in the short term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scaling up<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the technologies being promoted most vigorously to comply with decarbonization agreements is capturing CO<sub>2<\/sub> quickly and efficiently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An example of this is Alejandro Montesinos research work. In recent years, he has specialized in <strong>developing materials that enable carbon dioxide to be captured, used, and mitigated.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The technologies used to capture CO<sub>2<\/sub> have been industrially viable and functional for decades. Basically, they use liquids or solids through which CO<sub>2<\/sub> is passed to trap its molecules. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cTechnological challenge of CO<sub>2<\/sub> capturing is mostly solved yet what to do with it once it\u2019s been captured\u201d<\/strong>, Montesinos says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally speaking, there are two routes. One way is to reuse it and transform it into something useful like methanol, urea, methane, or even purify it for use in certain foods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor example, some steel companies capture CO<sub>2<\/sub>, purify it to 96%, and sell it to other companies specialized in gas purification. Those companies purify it from 96% to 99.999% to turn it into a food-grade product, and that\u2019s the CO<sub>2<\/sub> which is used to make sodas fizz,\u201d the researcher explains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transforming CO2<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The reactions that <strong>transform CO<sub>2<\/sub> into something useful<\/strong> require catalyzing materials to accelerate them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is part of the work cut out for Montesinos and his team, who are currently developing a project that focuses on generating materials to accelerate reactions and enable CO<sub>2<\/sub> to be transformed into methanol.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other route available is CO<sub>2<\/sub> capturing and burying it. One of the challenges of this method is finding mines with specific geological components to store CO<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Montesinos\u2019 work consists of developing environmentally friendly <strong>solid materials that enable the greatest amount of CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong> to be captured so that it can be buried afterward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CO<sub>2<\/sub> is passed through solids \u2013generally, stones containing calcium and\/or magnesium\u2013 to turn it into a carbonate that can be stored in mines for centuries.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\">Here is an infographic that explains the processes for capturing CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reusing CO2 in manufacturing processes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alejandro Montesinos believes that this area of research will become more important to many industries, which is why this is one of the Institute of Advanced Materials\u2019 strategic projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCompanies that want to sell abroad must demonstrate that they\u2019re doing something to lower their CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions. Companies using fossil fuels are morally and ethically committed to reducing those emissions\u201d, he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, Montesino&#8217;s team is evaluating the CO<sub>2<\/sub> capture technologies available on the market as well as developing devices and prototypes for specific applications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to facilitate the process and scale up the national and
