Although a fan of the popular science TV show \u201cBeakman\u2019s World,\u201d she could also see herself working for a lifestyle magazine like the one in the movie \u201cThe Devil Wears Prada.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI started to look into how to do research in cosmetology. I found Dr. Mar\u00eda Cristina Pi\u00f1a Barba, who was working on skin proteins. I started to focus on burns, and that\u2019s where my path in biomaterials began,\u201d recalls this Tec de Monterrey researcher and professor in an interview with <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Del Prado Audelo also participates in the <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/es\/soi-stem\"><strong>Tec<\/strong><strong>\u2019<\/strong><strong>s SOI-STEM program<\/strong><\/a>, an initiative that aims to empower women in higher education in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere still aren\u2019t enough women in science. We represent about 30% of the world\u2019s researchers,\u201d explains Del Prado Audelo, who in 2023 was included in 3M\u2019s third annual <a href=\"https:\/\/curiosidad.3m.com\/blog\/25-mujeres-en-la-ciencia\/\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong><strong>25 Women in Science<\/strong><strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/a> award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u00bfInvisibles e invencibles? La batalla contra las superbacterias\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AtbGixLsU14?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nanotechnology in the 3M award<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, nine Mexican women received awards from multinational manufacturing company 3M, including two professors from Tec de Monterrey: Mar\u00eda Luisa del Prado Audelo and <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_17869\"><strong>Mirna Alejandra Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This award is given to women who stood out for their scientific merits and who have contributed to encouraging new generations of women to study science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The award seeks to reduce the gender gap by paving the way for girls and young women to take up STEM disciplines. That\u2019s why, since its first year, the 3M award has published a digital book that can be downloaded for free which includes the story of the researchers selected for the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEarth seen from afar looks like a miniature. That image, taken from a video or perhaps from a magazine, was etched into Mar\u00eda Luisa\u2019s retina when she was a girl. At that time, she dreamed of being an astronaut because she was moved by the enormity of space and the way it showed how small everything on the human scale is. She is passionate about biopolymeric materials and specializes in tissue regeneration engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring my post-doctoral studies, I started formulating nanosystems for controlled release of biomolecules to use them as unconventional treatments for pathological sciences,\u201d she explains in the ebook, which tells her story in a way that is accessible for young girls and teens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 3M publication states that her current work consists of projects to encapsulate drugs in nanocarriers and create nano, micro, and macro platforms for sustained release of nanoparticles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her interview with <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong>, the researcher explains the scientific development that earned her the recognition of her peers, especially with regard to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.org.mx\/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S0188-95322016000300235\"><strong>development of NanoSkin skin regeneration<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe put nanoparticles on a huge, enriched Band-Aid (a kind of strip formed by a biomaetrial that is placed on a wound to protect it). I work with nanoparticles for different things, but I also work with macro platforms for release,\u201d she says, referring to these strips of biomaterials that release molecules with beneficial properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge of obtaining these particles is not only in their extraction but also in the way they are delivered to the body. This is what is known as a <strong>\u201crelease platform,\u201d<\/strong> which can be made from natural or synthetic biopolymers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat nanotechnology does is <strong>encapsulate these molecules in a spherical shape<\/strong>. Because it\u2019s a sphere, there\u2019s a lot of surface area, and it can be modified so that it gets to the place you want it to go, such as the liver or other places,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCurcumin, for example, has so many properties that it can be applied to other places. So, we add those nanoparticles to a macro platform to make skin coatings,\u201d the professor adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"INGENIA | Mujeres en Ingenier\u00eda y Ciencias\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PNn5rNa7zM0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Tec de Monterrey seeks to increase the participation of women in STEM disciplines<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a>Tec research to combat hospital-acquired diseases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The project Del Prado Audelo is currently involved in attempts to encapsulate the nanoparticles present in essential oils to attack microorganisms that are not killed by traditional pharmaceuticals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are microorganisms that have developed a defense mechanism which coats them with a kind of gelatin composed of proteins, lipids, and DNA to protect them. This biofilm prevents the dispersal of any type of molecule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe compounds we\u2019re working with in the lab have anti-biofilm properties,\u201d says the researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She explains that these types of microorganisms cause the most common hospital-acquired infections and are a \u201cmajor health problem\u201d that was heightened by the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere were people who didn\u2019t die from SARS-CoV2 per se but because of an infection they acquired while intubated, and those infections can be very difficult to eradicate,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Tec team involved in this project proposes a non-traditional treatment with nanoparticles obtained from cinnamon and rosemary essential oils to combat antibiotic-resistant microorganisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThose microorganisms don\u2019t respond to conventional treatment but can be affected by certain oils. However, these oils are volatile and very irritating, so they can\u2019t be used directly on the skin,\u201d warns Del Prado Audelo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researcher explains to <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong> that the manipulation techniques of the nanoscopic world mean is even possible to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fmolb.2021.649395\/full\"><strong>manipulate drugs with side effects to a patient\u2019s health<\/strong><\/a>, as is the case with drugs used
