{"id":157240,"date":"2023-05-12T19:43:09","date_gmt":"2023-05-12T19:43:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=157240"},"modified":"2024-12-09T17:53:26","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T23:53:26","slug":"what-is-hydroxyapatite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/biotechnology\/what-is-hydroxyapatite\/","title":{"rendered":"Research into hydroxyapatite nanoparticles for developing vaccines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hydroxyapatite is a material that is familiar to dentists, orthopedists, and maxillofacial surgeons because they use it every day for filling, support, or bone substitute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a calcium phosphate mineral that is found naturally in the bones of humans and animals, which is why it\u2019s considered a very valuable material for medicine, as the body assimilates it without any problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_200477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enrique Guerrero Beltr\u00e1n<\/a>, a researcher at Tec de Monterrey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/school-of-medicine-and-health-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Medicine and Health Sciences<\/a>, hydroxyapatite also possesses properties at a nanoparticle scale that enables it to be used as a vehicle for delivering vaccines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be done by emulating the natural communication process between cells in the body. The metaphor that the researcher uses to illustrate this process is that different drugs can be sent in small boats that protect material so that it reaches a particular organ without spilling on the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur initial idea is to create little boats of nanomaterials that are going to ferry things from one side to the other, something that arrives at a specific site and doesn\u2019t degrade on its journey from the mouth or the blood,\u201d says Guerrero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is hydroxyapatite?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hydroxyapatite nanoparticles are one of the materials that could serve as a vehicle for proteins, peptides, or RNA. Although this has been studied since the start of the century, no one had done the work of compiling these studies carried out in the physical-chemical, biological, and biomedical areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Sofia_Lara_Ochoa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sof\u00eda Lara Ochoa<\/a>, who has recently graduated from Tec de Monterrey with a bachelor\u2019s degree in Chemical Sciences and Nanotechnology Engineering, did this research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Wendy Ortega, a researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/school-of-engineering-and-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Engineering and Science<\/a>, given the pandemic restrictions to use laboratories, to graduate Sof\u00eda had to devise an exhaustive investigation online. (Photo: Courtesy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pros and cons of hydroxyapatite<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lara Ochoa explains that the slightest change to the structure of hydroxyapatite completely changes its properties, which could lead to negative consequences for the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe fact that [hydroxyapatite] works with a certain biomolecule doesn\u2019t mean that it\u2019s going to work with another medicine. What\u2019s important about this paper is that this material is very promising, but much more needs to be done in terms of its connection with physicochemical properties and the effects it may have at a biological level,\u201d says Lara Ochoa, <a href=\"https:\/\/stingray-platinum-epzl.squarespace.com\/partners-impact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">who is now studying for a graduate degree in Chicago.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the young researcher\u2019s surprise, the paper has been \u201castonishingly\u201d successful.
