{"id":157319,"date":"2023-05-11T22:50:09","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T22:50:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=157319"},"modified":"2024-12-10T17:31:04","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T23:31:04","slug":"obesity-and-heart-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/obesity-and-heart-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Obesity is the greatest risk for heart diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cardiology.wustl.edu\/people\/douglas-l-mann\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Douglas Lowell Mann<\/a> is a Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and he dedicates his work to the study of <strong>heart failure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, he says that obesity and being overweight (both in men and women) are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/CIRCULATIONAHA.110.954388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">main risk factors for heart problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his lecture at the second <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/international-conference-on-obesity-research\/\">International Conference on Obesity Research<\/a>, organized by Tec de Monterrey&#8217;s Institute for Obesity Research, Lowell explained that heart treatments can be effective, but only for 50% of people. There is a group that needs transplants or assistive devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Conferencia con Douglas Lowell, Profesor de Biolog\u00eda Celular y Fisiolog\u00eda de Washington University.\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xy5GwbNBfHY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Obesity and heart disease<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several heart problems suffered by patients. Diastolic Heart Failure (HFpEF), for example, arises when the myocardium, the muscular tissue that pumps blood, cannot easily fill it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Systolic Heart Failure (HFrEF) is another disorder in which the myocardium can\u2019t contract properly and has trouble supplying blood to the body.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These disorders cause Left Ventricle Remodeling (LV Remodeling), a process in which the heart loses its capacity to contract; it thins and dilates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Douglas says that therapies such as weight loss or metabolic management, as well as medical equipment or drugs, are insufficient following heart failure damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, he believes that early intervention and prevention for overweight, obesity, and other risk factors can aid in the treatment of these medical disorders before they happen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Irreversible damage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During his talk, Lowell mentioned that certain medications can help revert heart failure at some point, but that <strong>overall success is rare<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He notes that cardiac failure could be caused not just by individual incidents such as heart attacks, but also by chronic illnesses such as obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When failure happens, it reduces the ejection fraction, which is the rate at which the heart pumps blood.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can have an impact on people&#8217;s quality of life and lead to further hospitalizations for heart failure or even death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although some individuals appear to have returned to &#8220;normal heart function&#8221; following different therapies, this occurs only in a minority of situations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is usually a partial recovery after heart failure of around 40% to 50%. Unfortunately, there is a group of people who do not fare well and must rely on transplants and ventricular assist devices,&#8221; Lowell adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/obesidad-fallas-cardiacas-tec.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/obesidad-fallas-cardiacas-tec.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Lowell Mann speaking at a conference about Obesity\n\n\" class=\"wp-image-157321\" width=\"823\" height=\"549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/obesidad-fallas-cardiacas-tec.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/05\/obesidad-fallas-cardiacas-tec-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 823px) 100vw, 823px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lowell was one of the experts to speak at the Conference organized by the IOR (Photo: Alejandro Salazar \/ TecScience)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prevention is key <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Douglas discussed the outcomes of therapeutic therapies and interventions targeted at decreasing damage following left ventricular remodeling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, therapies or <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27871197\/\">ventricular assist devices (LVAD)<\/a> can produce &#8220;Reverse Left Ventricle Remodeling (Reverse LV Remodeling),\u201d which is the opposite of what happens with cardiac injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is sufficient to maintain cardiac function, at least for a short time. However, several molecular changes that occur during remodeling remain unregulated,&#8221; he explains.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, he observes that, while scientific data suggest there is no complete recovery from heart failure, study in this field remains limited.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Douglas adds that people can be stable for several years or for the remainder of their lives after receiving therapy or treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite getting the greatest available medications, these persons may experience progressively serious heart failures over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This represents an opportunity for innovation and the discovery of new medications and treatments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his closing remarks, Lowell emphasized that one of the finest current therapies is developing a culture that minimizes cardiac failures by preventing conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Weight loss and diet alone are not sufficient; there
