{"id":157481,"date":"2023-05-29T18:39:24","date_gmt":"2023-05-29T18:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=157481"},"modified":"2024-12-10T17:30:28","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T23:30:28","slug":"health-pioneers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/health-pioneers\/","title":{"rendered":"Health Pioneers: transforming research into health"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A chickpea drink that lowers cholesterol and triglycerides; a technology platform that uses artificial intelligence to analyze the interaction of food and drugs with the microbiota; and nanocapsules loaded with natural drugs that can help in the treatment of <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/child-obesity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">childhood obesity<\/a> without any side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These three projects were made possible thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/content.tecsalud.mx\/hepi#etapa\">Health Pioneers<\/a> program, an initiative to promote <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en?s=technology+based+companies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">science and technology innovation and entrepreneurship<\/a> in healthcare, for the purpose of turning research into products or services that help solve various issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative uses the <strong>I-Corps methodology<\/strong> developed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/new.nsf.gov\/funding\/initiatives\/i-corps\">National Science Foundation<\/a>. Besides that, workshops, multidisciplinary work, and mentoring are carried out so that research can become a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Health Pioneers: science and entrepreneurship against obesity\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Icaygv6GVSM?list=PL54ogfmOaMfrdq8Mj56EcvuYP_ydnOUDa\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-health-research-initiative\"><a><\/a>Health research initiative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The call for the first edition of Health Pioneers was launched in March 2022 for full-time professors from Tec de Monterrey and TecSalud to submit research proposals focused on solving the problem of obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six projects were chosen to receive mentoring, with three of these receiving funding of 500,000 pesos. \u201cThe aim of this program is for researchers to be able to increase the development of their technology, define their market, and create a minimum viable product. We accompany them with technical, regulatory, and business aspects,\u201d says Vanessa Aguilar, strategic project leader at Tec de Monterrey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/en\/institute-obesity-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Obesity Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the institution has the <a href=\"https:\/\/ott.tec.mx\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tec de Monterrey Technology Transfer Office (TTO)<\/a>, which advises and helps researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/business-innovation\/technology-transfer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">turn their work into prototypes, products, and technology-based companies<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Health Pioneers focuses exclusively on health issues, <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/child-obesity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">specifically obesity due to the magnitude of this problem.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/es\/profesores\/eic\/janet-alejandra-gutierrez-uribe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Janet Guti\u00e9rrez<\/a>, who already has experience with technology-based companies, participating in this type of call is important. \u201cIt helps us to change the mindset that we have to focus on publications, which many of us were taught. This prompts us to restructure our thinking, to have much more open communication with industry and the market in order to spin up projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-methodology-for-researchers\"><a><\/a>A methodology for researchers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Health Pioneers program has several stages, ranging from preparation workshops, project pre-selection, and training programs to funding, follow up, and incubation of the most notable projects. This is done by the EBCT Center of Excellence at the <a href=\"https:\/\/emprendimiento.tec.mx\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eugenio Garza Lag\u00fcera Entrepreneurship Institute<\/a> of Tec de Monterrey<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It uses the Innovation Corps or <strong>I-Corps<\/strong> methodology created by the National Science Foundation, whose objective is to promote scientific research technology transfer. This is based on creating <strong>multidisciplinary teams<\/strong> from business and research areas and <strong>conducting real-life surveys and interviews<\/strong> to obtain information on market requirements and analyze results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_188570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Omar Lozano<\/a>, leader of one of the finalist projects, explains two aspects that Health Pioneers helped them strengthen. \u201cIn the area of technology development, they prompted us to carry out an in-depth search to see what has already been patented. So, now we are certain there is no prior knowledge. In business strategy, they taught us the importance of building interdisciplinary teams, where there are technically capable people who also have business skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All this enables researchers to progress more effectively with their projects, as well as find solutions to tangible problems. Throughout the process, they receive technical, regulatory, corporate, and business advice, including patents and feasibility, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the program, the aim is for them to develop prototypes that reach the market to be commercialized, whether by creating a company or support for licensing the technology to an existing company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Janet Guti\u00e9rrez points out that what took her almost 20 years with <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/business-innovation\/black-beans-supplement\/\">Jaseda, her black bean startup<\/a>, will now take around three years thanks to the support of Health Pioneers. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge advantage to be accompanied by experts on the business model side, on intellectual property issues, and also when pivoting your ideas promptly and correctly with people who are in the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2022-health-pioneers-winning-projects-and-lessons-learned\"><a><\/a>2022 Health Pioneers winning projects and lessons learned<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the 3 finalist projects that received funding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-microbiome-led-by-alejandro-garcia-gonzalez\"><a><\/a>MicroBiome, led by Alejandro Garc\u00eda Gonz\u00e1lez<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This technology platform uses artificial intelligence to analyze the interaction of food and drugs with the human gut microbiota. In this way, pharmaceutical and food companies can evaluate the effects of their products, study their impact, and determine if they are as healthy as expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This analysis is done through <em>in vitro<\/em> simulations, using algorithms that predict the effect of these products on the microbiota and how they interact with gastrointestinal bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the lessons learned, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com.mx\/citations?user=QgsD9FkAAAAJ&amp;hl=es\">Alejandro Garc\u00eda<\/a> says that Health Pioneers gave him a structure that reduces the possibility of failure: \u201cPerhaps your project doesn\u2019t lend itself to being brought to market, but if you structure it this way, you\u2019ll make further progress and you\u2019ll be able to add value to your idea,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest challenges for him was time management. \u201cDeveloping a project like this requires somewhat different planning. It\u2019s very important to work as a team so that we can achieve our common objective together. Time is tight because it\u2019s a 10-month program with quite ambitious deliverables, so we had to restructure the way we worked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-seprotect-by-janet-gutierrez\"><a><\/a>SeProtect by Janet Gutierrez<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a germinated <strong>chickpea-based drink that seeks to reduce blood lipids, <\/strong>such as cholesterol and triglycerides. Selenium is obtained organically from this legume, which is one of those most commonly produced in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Janet points out that there are studies on this natural mineral that prove how it stimulates the antioxidant system and its effects on reducing the size of tumors, which is why they studied its benefits for lipid metabolism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team has spent almost a decade validating the beneficial effects through <em>in vitro<\/em> and <em>in vivo<\/em> models and will soon begin a clinical trial to finish validating this product\u2019s health benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Janet, one of the main lessons learned from this process was the importance of working as a team and not in isolation. <strong>\u201cYou have to know how to ask for help in good time.<\/strong> I think that\u2019s something we sometimes fail to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-anti-inflammatory-nanoformulation-led-by-omar-lozano\">Anti-inflammatory nanoformulation, led by Omar Lozano<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These are very <strong>efficient nanosystems that can deliver drugs to stop inflammation in specific tissues<\/strong> such as the heart, which can be caused by metabolic disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This innovation seeks to design nanocapsules with natural drugs that can help in the treatment of childhood obesity, especially in cases where lifestyle change isn\u2019t possible or is insufficient. This method is much safer as it has fewer side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Health Pioneers program helped Omar\u2019s team to complete the technical tests and design a business strategy, \u201cSo that everything we think about in the lab can easily reach society,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe advice that I would give to every researcher who has an idea for a science and technology startup is to <strong>first dream big. <\/strong>And, once that dream is clear, approach experts, apply to calls, and seek advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-an-opportunity-to-go-from-ideas-to-startups\"><a><\/a>An opportunity to go from ideas to startups<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The three researchers agree that Health Pioneers is a platform that uses their research to create a real impact, allowing it to go beyond the idea stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHealth Pioneers helped us speed up our progress and maintain focus\u2026 to not fall in love with the research, but to always seek to solve a problem that affects people, who are your product\u2019s potential customers,\u201d said Janeth Gutierrez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome things may change in future editions, but we will continue to look at the issue of obesity and promoting interdisciplinary teams,\u201d said Vanessa Aguilar, leader of this initiative.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first edition of Health Pioneers entrepreneurship initiative, promoted by TecSalud and TTD, had three finalists.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":157482,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_eb_attr":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[86],"tags":[224],"class_list":["post-157481","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-health","tag-health"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v21.0 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
