However, these places became overcrowded within the space of a few days and the volunteers didn\u2019t know what else to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to similar situations, <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/es\/profesores\/eaad\/aleksandra-krstikj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aleksandra Krstikj<\/a>, a research professor at Tec de Monterrey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/school-of-architecture-art-and-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Architecture, Art, and Design<\/a>, has developed a <strong>geospatial and mathematical tool<\/strong> for distributing volunteers during emergencies and helping vulnerable groups to obtain essential supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/algorithm-that-distributes-volunteers-during-an-emergency-2.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"749\" height=\"312\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/algorithm-that-distributes-volunteers-during-an-emergency-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-157985\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/algorithm-that-distributes-volunteers-during-an-emergency-2.jpg 749w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/07\/algorithm-that-distributes-volunteers-during-an-emergency-2-300x125.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 749px) 100vw, 749px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The International Conference on Resilient Systems 2023 brought together international experts from multiple disciplines and was organized by Adolfo De Un\u00e1nue, the Academic and Research Director of the School of Government and Public Transformation. (Photo: Israel P\u00e9rez \/ TecScience)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The algorithm for emergency aid<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe developed this algorithm to send the first volunteers to hazardous zones and then distribute them to areas with fewer problems,\u201d explained Krstikj on the second day of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/resilience-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Conference on Resilient Systems<\/a>, organized by Tec de Monterrey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/school-of-government-and-public-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Government and Public Transformation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tool also includes proximity to different services, calculating the number of people available to help who might be needed per zone, and identifying neighborhoods with the greatest levels of risk. This study used the <strong>municipality of Atizap\u00e1n de Zaragoza<\/strong> as a scenario for applying the tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Krstikj, who is a specialist on land use in city outskirts, added that the tool acts as an interface between science and public policy for <strong>crisis planning<\/strong> as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also spoke about another area of her research, which <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/tianguis-and-access-to-fresh-food\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">analyzes the distribution of stores and markets where people buy their food<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Mexicans have access to stores, these are hardly ever places that sell healthy food, which leads to 30% of <a href=\"\/en\/health\/child-obesity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">children in the country having obesity<\/a>, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is in spite of Mexican cuisine having been classified as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Street markets are an example of resilience<\/strong> because they have survived over the centuries, outlasting all the large supermarket chains. Only 10% of what supermarket chains sell is fresh, while 60% of produce sold at street markets is fresh,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing the location of different stores is one way of establishing a connection between nutrition and mobility.
