{"id":158584,"date":"2023-09-10T17:21:08","date_gmt":"2023-09-10T17:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=158584"},"modified":"2023-09-13T17:39:16","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T17:39:16","slug":"complex-thinking-for-the-future-of-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/complex-thinking-for-the-future-of-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Complex thinking for the future of education"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The ability to solve problems or make sound, well-reasoned decisions is a tool that all professionals need for their personal development, which is why universities all over the world teach complex thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat modern industry demands of universities is that their graduates possess <strong>skills<\/strong> that an <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong><\/a><strong> algorithm cannot provide<\/strong>. Complex thinking can help with that,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/sitios.itesm.mx\/ehe\/facultad\/jcvazquez.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jos\u00e9 Carlos V\u00e1zquez Parra<\/a>, professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/school-of-humanities-and-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Humanities and Education<\/a> and researcher at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-the-future-of-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for the Future of Education (IFE)<\/a> in an interview with <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In research published last April entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-3387\/13\/4\/104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Social Entrepreneurship, Complex Thinking, and Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy: Correlational Study in a Sample of Mexican Students<\/em><\/a>, V\u00e1zquez Parra and a group of researchers looked into the relationship between developing social entrepreneurship projects, the development of complex thinking, and entrepreneurial self-efficacy in a group of students from different universities in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe found the three elements to be correlated: social entrepreneurs develop complex thinking and entrepreneurial self-efficacy on the march,\u201d says the expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"From concept to market: building a successful product\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QYLEnoKKVNQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-complex-thinking-and-how-can-it-be-taught\"><strong>What is complex thinking and how can it be taught?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Complex thinking<\/strong> is the development of cognitive skills that make it possible to interrelate different aspects of reality to deal with real-life problems and situations, which are often more complex than those posed in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, this involves the ability to integrate the abstract or complex information involved in other sub-skills or skills such as creative thinking, critical thinking, scientific thinking, reasoning, concept development, conflict resolution, and moral and ethical analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cComplex thinking plays a part in any educational practice in which students have to make rational choices, take complex decisions, and solve problems or challenges,\u201d explains V\u00e1zquez Parra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For him and his fellow researchers, it was important to understand whether there were any processes in other disciplines that might trigger this way of thinking. So, they took a close look at students working on social entrepreneurship proposals to find out if there were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social entrepreneurship seeks to solve social or human problems in an innovative, sustainable manner. According to the expert, students engrossed in the process of coming up with new ideas for a project also develop other important skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These skills include <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/negocios-innovacion\/transferencia-tecnologica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">entrepreneurial self-efficacy<\/a>, which allows students to integrate the cognitive and attitudinal skills they need to assess the likelihood of their social entrepreneurship project being successful, despite the natural uncertainty of the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has to do with whether they believe their project is going to be viable and successful,\u201d says V\u00e1zquez Parra. This skill is crucial for taking on the real world and being able to put forward opposite solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-pilot-study-to-foment-complex-thinking\"><strong>A pilot study to foment complex thinking<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The research team comprising V\u00e1zquez Parra, Patricia Alonso, Paloma Su\u00e1rez, and Martina Carlos from the <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/en\/ife\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IFE<\/a>, alongside Marco Cruz from the <a href=\"https:\/\/futurociudades.tec.mx\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for the Future of Cities<\/a>, implemented an online methodology to test the relationship between these three elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This consisted of three phases: initial diagnosis, formative activities, and closing evaluation. At the initial diagnosis stage, question-based measurement instruments were used to assess whether students already possessed social entrepreneurship, complex thinking, and entrepreneurial self-efficacy skills without having been taught anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the formative activity stage, students were asked to devise, develop, and prototype a social entrepreneurship project. At the closing evaluation stage, the same measurement instruments were used to determine whether these three competencies had changed as a result of training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we discovered was that these three skills are interrelated and drive one another,\u201d explains V\u00e1zquez Parra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-complex-thinking-for-the-future-of-education\"><strong>Complex thinking for the future of education<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>V\u00e1zquez Parra and the researchers who participated in the study belong to <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/es\/r4c-irg\">R4C-IRC<\/a>, an interdisciplinary research group that seeks to scale complex thinking in undergraduate and graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its vision is to contribute to the future of education to adapt it to the changing world in which we live and empower individuals who contribute to the improvement of human societies and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to take our knowledge of complex thinking and the tools needed to face the future a little beyond the established limit,\u201d
