That\u2019s why it\u2019s considered a silent disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Owing to its complications, it\u2019s a costly condition too. In fact, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) estimates that 17 billion dollars per year is spent on diabetes in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, the conventional methods currently used to detect diabetes are intrusive. As blood needs to be extracted to take samples, this means patients having to do so on an empty stomach and waiting for a couple of hours in a doctor\u2019s office. Detection periods are also very short or very long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_17869\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Mirna Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong><\/a>, a researcher from Tec de Monterrey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/tag\/institute-for-obesity-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Obesity Research<\/a>, glucose tests can be manipulated because patients tend to eat healthily in the days before them \u2212very differently to the way they normally do\u2212 which gives different results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs current methods are invasive and require fasting, we don\u2019t have a method that enables us to do <strong>interim monitoring<\/strong>. So, we\u2019re proposing <strong>novel methods<\/strong>,\u201d says Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-tecscience wp-block-embed-tecscience\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"bjCr2IOaps\"><a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/biotechnology\/mirna-gonzalez\/\">Mirna Gonz\u00e1lez: Understanding how cells work in 3D<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Mirna Gonz\u00e1lez: Understanding how cells work in 3D&#8221; &#8212; TecScience\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/biotechnology\/mirna-gonzalez\/embed\/#?secret=sD8FMSOr7R#?secret=bjCr2IOaps\" data-secret=\"bjCr2IOaps\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-diabetec-a-new-alternative\"><strong>DiabeTec: A New Alternative<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first method developed by the <strong>DiabeTec<\/strong> initiative uses <strong>saliva<\/strong> to detect the molecule 1,5 Anhydroglucitol (1,5 AHG), which is similar to glucose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe difference is that it is inversely proportional to glucose in the body. So, glucose is high and AHG is low if someone is diabetic,\u201d explains the scientist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this investigation, they collected saliva samples from several people, which were treated to remove the sugar that can interfere with results. Finally, the sample is illuminated with a special light source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe concept is about offering a <strong>needle-free and painless<\/strong> technology that doesn\u2019t require fasting either, so samples can be taken at any time. That enables us to know if patients have normal 1,5 AHG levels. What\u2019s more, it\u2019s less wasteful,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, they predict that this type of sample will cost 600 pesos and have a detection period of 48 hours to two weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-solutions\"><strong>Other Solutions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as Gonz\u00e1lez\u2019s team realized that not all laboratories have luminescence equipment, the researchers have considered other options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of these is colorimetric analysis of saliva samples, developed by Tec graduate researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Alonso-Ornelas-Gonzalez\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alonso Ornelas<\/a>. This works by means of an enzymatic platform, which can also detect molecules other than 1,5 AHG, such as uric acid and galactose, a simple sugar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the other detection methods they have developed is paper-based colorimetric sensing, developed by biomedical engineer <strong>Fernando Torres<\/strong>. This is a paper-based microfluidic platform that changes color in the presence of the molecule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfterwards, we realized we had overlooked the pH effect in saliva, but it\u2019s very important, especially when we\u2019re working with enzymes. We need to check that the samples have the right pH levels so that we can analyze them,\u201d explains Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><!--HubSpot Call-to-Action Code --><span class=\"hs-cta-wrapper\"
