{"id":160568,"date":"2024-02-28T20:23:39","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T20:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=160568"},"modified":"2024-02-28T23:29:59","modified_gmt":"2024-02-28T23:29:59","slug":"tec-science-summit-2024-inaguration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/tec-science-summit-2024-inaguration\/","title":{"rendered":"Collaborating with the Industry is Essential for the Future of Research: David Garza"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Promoting scientific research is challenging in a country like Mexico, where less than 0.3% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is destined to science and technology and the participation of the private sector is below 19%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to invite our researchers to connect more with the industry to learn what challenges we face in the future, which undoubtedly require their skills to be faced,\u201d said <strong>David Garza<\/strong>, rector and executive president of Tec de Monterrey during the inauguration of the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/tec-science-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Tec Science Summit 2024<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, achieving this collaboration is essential for the research carried out at Tec to reach the next level. An applied science, with a positive and tangible impact on the great problems humanity faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The institution&#8217;s commitment to research has strengthened over the years. Today, it has 710 researchers and an annual scientific production of 2,500 articles, where 50% of the publications are in collaboration with international institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also founded three research institutes: the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-of-advanced-materials-for-sustainable-manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Obesity Research (IOR)<\/a>, the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-of-advanced-materials-for-sustainable-manufacturing\/\">Institute of Advanced Materials for Sustainable Manufacturing (IAMSM)<\/a> and the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-the-future-of-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for the Future of Education (IFE)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Echoing this idea, Guillermo Torre, vicepresident of Research at <strong>Tec de Monterrey<\/strong> and rector at <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/tecsalud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TecSalud<\/a>, used the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/origen-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oriGen project<\/a> as an example of how fruitful relationships between science and industry can be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to save the voluminous information collected by it, oriGen partnered with the technology company Microsoft, and with the pharmaceutical company <a href=\"\/en\/health\/regeneron-genetics-and-tec-de-monterrey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Regeneron<\/a>, to be able to sequence part of the genomes of the 100,000 individuals that will be part of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we don&#8217;t approach the industry to solve concrete problems, the probability that we will do something with a significant impact is really going to be small,\u201d Torre said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/02\/tec-science-summit-2024-3.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/02\/tec-science-summit-2024-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-160577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/02\/tec-science-summit-2024-3.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/02\/tec-science-summit-2024-3-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Guillermo Torre showcased cases of successful collaboration between industry and science. (Photo: Alejandro Salazar \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-artificial-intelligence-in-scientific-research\"><strong>Artificial Intelligence in Scientific Research<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The new edition of the Tec Science Summit  \u2212which has been held for 54 years, although it was previously called the Research and Development Congress (CID)\u2212 focused on the <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/tec-science-summit-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in scientific research<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Torre, this technology will help with three fundamental aspects: trend analysis, prediction of results and complex simulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This interaction between AI and research has allowed applications such as the detection of diseases that are difficult to diagnose, finding more effective medications or creating environmentally friendly materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its future applications are still unclear, but promising, Torre emphasized.
