{"id":161038,"date":"2024-03-21T19:07:58","date_gmt":"2024-03-21T19:07:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=161038"},"modified":"2024-12-09T13:27:17","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T19:27:17","slug":"chaotic-printing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/biotechnology\/chaotic-printing\/","title":{"rendered":"Chaotic Printing: A Step Forward in Tissue and Organ Fabrication"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>According to government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.mx\/cenatra\/documentos\/estadisticas-50060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data from the National Transplant Registry<\/a>, more than 20,137 patients in Mexico were awaiting a transplant in early 2024, with only 1,302 done at the time, prompting research into alternative solutions from fields such as biomedicine, organ bioprinting, and chaotic printing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"La impresi\u00f3n ca\u00f3tica, un paso adelante en la fabricaci\u00f3n de tejidos y \u00f3rganos\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TB68V0IsGMA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>chaotic printing<\/strong> was developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/grissel-trujillo-de-santiago-48bb6233\/?originalSubdomain=mx\">Grissel Trujillo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alvareztrujillolab.com\/info\/inves\/mario_alvarez.html\">Mario \u00c1lvarez<\/a>, the Tec de Monterrey research professors and leaders of the Alvarez-Trujillo Lab, along with other scientists and students who collaborate with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trujillo exemplifies <strong>chaotic printing <\/strong>by forming structures similar to those seen while pouring liquid cream into coffee, resulting in diverse forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contrary to its name, this sort of printing is <strong>predictable and controllable<\/strong>. It allows it to efficiently manufacture exact structures using <strong>mathematical calculations<\/strong>, perhaps paving the way for the <strong>printing of organs and tissues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Grissel Trujillo, una investigadora optimista y so\u00f1adora\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TqtW2aGLyQc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Subtitles Available in Spanish<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chaotic-printing\"><strong>Chaotic Printing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike 3D printing, which creates structures by stacking materials, chaotic printing uses flows of viscous materials that are injected to produce structures that <strong>resemble human tissues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grissel Trujillo explains Mario \u00c1lvarez&#8217;s work inspired her in the chemical sector, where he used very viscous fluids to form combinations in a slow, simple process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These circumstances are ideal for <strong>organ and tissue bioprinting <\/strong>since caution is required to avoid harming the injected cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Cells <\/strong>must be handled with extreme caution, or they will die. So, with other printing methods, to <strong>create very thin layers<\/strong>, cells must be supplied through a very small needle, which puts a lot of stress on the cells and causes them to die,&#8221; adds Trujillo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These structures are generated at a microscopic size; therefore, they are exceedingly small and detailed, with ideal interior architecture&#8221;, adds the researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another feature of <strong>chaotic printing <\/strong>is that the produced structures are <strong>compatible with cells and biological materials<\/strong>, making them suitable for printing since they are made swiftly and precisely, which are critical factors in producing<strong> living tissues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2024\/03\/grisel-trujillo.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2024\/03\/grisel-trujillo.jpg\" alt=\"Investigadoras en un laboratorio\" class=\"wp-image-161862\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">With other partners, researchers Grissel Trujillo and Mario \u00c1lvarez created this breakthrough approach to change tissue and organ production. (Photo: CONECTA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-applications-of-chaotic-printing\"><strong>Applications of Chaotic Printing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2018\/mh\/c8mh00344k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">research<\/a> has the potential to impact various sectors, including <strong>regenerative medicine<\/strong>, <strong>therapeutic and pharmaceutical development<\/strong>, and even <strong>food production<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The capacity to create customized tissues for <strong>transplantation <\/strong>may reduce dependency on organ donors and improve the compatibility of some transplants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, it may be possible to print <strong>small human tissues to evaluate<\/strong> the efficacy and safety of new drugs, thus <strong>reducing the need for animals <\/strong>in pharmaceutical research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another use for chaotic printing is creating alternative meals, such as <a href=\"\/en\/biotechnology\/cultivating-meat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lab-grown beef<\/a>. Trujillo says that printing skeletal muscle tissue might provide a sustainable alternative to traditional meat production, lowering the requirement for animal breeding and reducing its environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trujillo, \u00c1lvarez, and a group of entrepreneurs founded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/forma-foods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forma Foods<\/a>. This startup prints meat by taking a biopsy from livestock, isolating stem cells in a bioreactor, multiplying them, and stimulating them to create <strong>skeletal muscle with nutrients and flavor similar to traditional meat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I say it, but so do my colleagues from other areas: <strong>this can revolutionize the game in bio-manufacturing and bio-printing<\/strong>. We should be happy that it is a Mexican-made technology produced by Latin American researchers and students from Tec de Monterrey,&#8221; Trujillo
