It will be a space designed to conduct remote research and allow other universities to control autonomous systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project is inspired by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/school\/georgia-institute-of-technology\/?originalSubdomain=es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Georgia Institute of Technology\u2019s Robotarium<\/a>, created in 2017. The facility is a space for <strong>tests and experiments with state-of-the-art robots <\/strong>that can be remotely controlled from different parts of the world by students and academics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt will be a laboratory focused on autonomous systems and research\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_177546\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luis Guerrero-Bonilla<\/a>, a robotics specialist at Tec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the National Robotics Laboratory already existed on the Monterrey campus, this new space will house new teams with three objectives: <strong>robotics research, teaching, and services to industry<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough those who come here are students looking to generate new methodologies in the field of robotics and control, there\u2019s also laboratory teaching,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/herman-casta%C3%B1eda-33a6a571\/?originalSubdomain=mx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Herman Casta\u00f1eda<\/a>, a specialist in automatic control at the Tec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/robotarium-tec-monterrey.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/robotarium-tec-monterrey.jpg\" alt=\"Robotics laboratory in Tec Monterrey\" class=\"wp-image-161409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/robotarium-tec-monterrey.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/robotarium-tec-monterrey-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Robotics specialists from Tec de Monterrey have been working to update the space for a year. (Photo: Courtesy of the interviewees)\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-robotics-used-for-logistics-or-agriculture\">Robotics Used for Logistics or Agriculture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the laboratory installed on the ceiling, <strong>state-of-the-art cameras<\/strong> point to the central area where the devices move according to their programming. These devices help locate the position of the autonomous systems at all times, manipulate them accurately, and avoid collisions between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The laboratory is a room lined with computers and desks. This leaves a free area in the center for maneuvering the robots, which can be both <strong>airborne drones and ground vehicles.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With that information we can design control and interaction strategies between several robots. One advantage (of the cameras) is their .05 millimeter accuracy, which allows us to test algorithms in general robotics at a reliable level,&#8221; says Casta\u00f1eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A net protects the central testing area as a safety measure <strong>to prevent them from crashing into walls, <\/strong>computers or people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An example of what can be put into practice in this laboratory is what is known in this field as <strong>robust control<\/strong>, which means that a drone can continue its trajectory in spite of external disturbances such as gusts of wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another example would be testing algorithms for a drone, an automated vehicle, and a manipulator arm so <strong>they can communicate with each other and perform <a href=\"\/en\/science-communication\/autonomous-underwater-vehicles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">specific tasks<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Casta\u00f1eda, the Robotarium is also useful for different industries, from package delivery to the agricultural sector. In fact, <strong>drone trajectories were designed for spraying crops with pesticides for a company in that field.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow can you design the trajectory (of the drone) in such a way that you make better use of the battery and the pesticide you\u2019re spraying? (Photo: Courtesy of the interviewees)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-democratizing-robotics\">Democratizing Robotics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The long-term objective of the laboratory is <strong>to create a network of similar spaces on other campuses or at other universities<\/strong>, as well as to allow students from Latin America to do research in this field from their countries of origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI share the philosophy of the Robotarium in the United States, which is <strong>to democratize robotics<\/strong>. There is a high barrier in using robotic systems because not everyone can afford the equipment.
