{"id":161546,"date":"2024-04-15T15:21:01","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T21:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=161546"},"modified":"2024-12-09T13:27:01","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T19:27:01","slug":"microalgae-in-the-cosmetic-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/biotechnology\/microalgae-in-the-cosmetic-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Microalgae: Natural Ingredients For Beauty Products"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Microalgae<\/strong> are becoming a natural ingredient that is advancing in the <strong>cosmetic industry<\/strong>, a growing business that by 2027 has prospective sales of $580 billion, according to data from the consulting firm <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/destacados\/el-mercado-de-la-belleza-en-2023-un-informe-especial-sobre-el-estado-de-la-moda\/es\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">McKinsey &amp; Company<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to stricter regulation and <strong>consumer<\/strong> demands, it is increasingly important that industries find molecules that, in addition to having <strong>desirable properties<\/strong>, do not cause harm to the <strong>environment<\/strong> or people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this reason, researchers around the world have started looking for <strong>active substances <\/strong>in plants, fungi, bacteria, animals and algae that can replace synthetic ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Microalgae<\/strong> are a group of algae formed by simple structures of one or a few cells, which can reproduce quickly and generate a lot of biomass; an example is the famous Spirulina, used as a dietary supplement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom an evolutionary perspective, different species of algae have thrived in very diverse environments,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_74732\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jorge Benavides<\/a>, research professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/biotechnology\/advances-in-biotechnology-the-first-15-years-of-the-femsa-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biotechnology Center<\/a> and the <a href=\"\/en\/health\/tec-de-monterrey-creates-the-institute-for-obesity-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Obesity Research<\/a> (IOR) at Tec de Monterrey, in an interview with <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, this has caused them to generate compounds that serve many purposes, including retaining moisture or protecting themselves from UV rays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why, for years, Benavides has studied <strong>microalgae<\/strong> -among other organisms- with the aim of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1570023204000662\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">isolating molecules of interes<\/a>t. His group specializes in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1570023204000479?casa_token=IuJhP47eZm0AAAAA:LIyV-EKTB7GjU9w3VQDWK8JlSUQTvIwF4uJk115Dqy7hDPjUr10nkUaffdOeBbXUVcgy9uLbuVzV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> finding biological compounds<\/a> with desirable activities for different <strong>applications<\/strong> for the <strong>pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic <\/strong>and <strong>bioremediation industries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, they find the natural sources of these molecules and design the chain of processes to extract them. \u201cThis whole train of conceptualization, design and development of bioprocesses is what we are experts in\u201d explains the researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, they are an example of the science that many industries promise support their products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u00bfEl sargazo puede tener usos ben\u00e9ficos?\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KvwoVt9qjCk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Subtitles Available in English<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-have-microalgae-been-used-for-a-long-time-in-the-cosmetic-industry\">Have Microalgae Been Used For A Long Time In The Cosmetic Industry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Microalgae<\/strong> are beginning to make their way into the <strong>cosmetic industry<\/strong> as a source of natural ingredients, but this has not always been the case: \u201cThey are unusual organisms and are not the first to be chosen,\u201d says <strong>Zaida Garza<\/strong>, a PhD student in Biotechnology in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/363639175_Prospective_on_the_application_of_abiotic_stresses_to_enhance_the_industrial_production_of_exopolysaccharides_from_microalgae\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bioprocesses group<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, many <strong>natural ingredients<\/strong> in <strong>beauty products<\/strong> come from <strong>recombinant bacteria<\/strong> -which are genetically modified to generate molecules of interest. However, microalgae also have compounds that could be useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these are <strong>phycobiliproteins<\/strong>, which are part of the chloroplasts of algae -they can carry out photosynthesis, just like plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-microalgae-sources-of-natural-dyes\">Microalgae: Sources Of Natural Dyes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These <strong>proteins are fluorescent<\/strong>, have striking colors and antioxidant properties. Therefore, they are often used in laboratories and could be used as natural pigments. \u201cOne with which I have worked a lot gives a deep Mexican pink,\u201d says Benavides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, they have extracted <strong>carotenes and carotenoids<\/strong>, which produce colors in the range of yellows, oranges and reds. Thus, these compounds can be used in any <strong>cosmetic formula<\/strong> that requires color, such as lipsticks, blushes, eye shadows, and eyeliners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By r<strong>eplacing synthetic dyes <\/strong>with natural ones, not only are potential damages to the environment and the health of consumers avoided, but they can also have more than one use, such as providing color plus serving as antioxidants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTypically, synthetic dyes have no other application beyond providing color,\u201d says Benavides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-potential-sources-of-moisturizers-and-sunscreens\">Potential Sources Of Moisturizers And Sunscreens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Garza has focused on a group of compounds called <strong>exopolysaccharides<\/strong>. These are generated by algae when they are in a body of water that is drying out and, therefore, need to retain moisture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey could be included in <strong>creams or serums <\/strong>to hydrate the skin and promote anti-aging,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to her, these compounds <strong>could compete with hyaluronic acid<\/strong>, a very sought out ingredient in the cosmetics industry that is currently obtained through recombinant bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, other groups have studied its properties to <strong>protect against UV radiation<\/strong>, modulate the immune system and even help heal wounds. Over time, <strong>exopolysaccharides<\/strong> could replace some of the ingredients in current sunscreens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-benefits-of-using-microalgae-in-the-cosmetic-industry\">Benefits Of Using Microalgae In The Cosmetic Industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to researchers, using <strong>microalgae <\/strong>as a source of active ingredients for beauty products has <strong>many benefits<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>first one<\/strong> is that since they are photosynthetic organisms, large investments are not required to maintain them and the <strong>production cost is low.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, <strong>multiple compounds<\/strong> of interest can be extracted<strong> from a single culture<\/strong>, obtaining two, three or four ingredients from a single bioreactor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding regulations: \u201cFor safety reasons, synthetic dyes <strong>are already declining<\/strong>, so we have to look for alternatives,\u201d explains the expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Probably the most important thing is that<strong> microalgae<\/strong> could be a model of <a href=\"\/en\/business-innovation\/circular-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">circular economy<\/a> and <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/alex-elias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sustainability<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These can use the carbon dioxide (CO2) generated by human activities, transforming it into useful compounds for them. Thus, they would generate natural ingredients for the cosmetic industry while cleaning the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the next 10 or 15 years, a greater variety of <strong>microalgae<\/strong> will be used in industrial processes, this is only the beginning,\u201d concludes Benavides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify
