Implants Bidirectional Electrodes in Parkinson\u2019s Patient for First Time in Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A 65-year-old patient with Parkinson\u2019s who wasn\u2019t responding to conventional treatment has become <strong>the first person in Mexico to receive bidirectional electrode implants for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bidirectional electrode treatment consists of inserting these devices into specific areas of the brain and connecting them to a <strong>neurostimulator<\/strong>, which sends electrical impulses to improve the symptoms caused by this condition.<br><br>Once these implants are inserted, <strong>the equipment sends electrical impulses that effectively manage the characteristic symptoms<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/mouth-sounds-to-diagnose-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Parkinson\u2019s<\/a> disease, including tremors, bradykinesia, and motor complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div id=\"h-deep-brain-stimulation-less-medication-fewer-side-effects\">Deep Brain Stimulation: Less Medication, Fewer Side Effects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tecsalud.mx\/directorio-medico\/dr-fortino-salazar-salazar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fortino Salazar,<\/a> a <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/tecsalud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TecSalud<\/a> neurosurgeon who took part in the procedure, explained that the treatment <strong>lowers the amount of medication traditionally used by 50% on average<\/strong>, as well as reducing side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt enables patients\u2019 quality of life to be improved with a more dynamic system that sends an electrical impulse to the brain.<strong> It can even detect brain activity and modify it<\/strong>, sometimes doing so instantaneously,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A multidisciplinary team performs resonance imaging and <a href=\"\/en\/health\/the-future-of-parkinsons-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neuropsychological tests<\/a> to evaluate patients who are candidates for this therapy and determine viability of the intervention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>electrodes stay implanted in the patient\u2019s brain for life<\/strong>, adapting to counteract the anomalous signals associated with Parkinson\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some symptoms of the condition include<strong> resting tremors, rigidity and slowness of movement, and difficulties in walking.<\/strong><br><br>This operation, led by the TecSalud <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/center-for-parkinsons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Parkinson\u2019s and Movement Disorders<\/a>, is a medical breakthrough for treating <strong>neurodegenerative diseases in the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mexico records approximately <strong>50 new cases of Parkinson\u2019s<\/strong> for every 100,000 inhabitants per year, according to statistics from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.mx\/salud\/innn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cManuel Velasco Su\u00e1rez\u201d
