{"id":161744,"date":"2024-04-23T18:12:57","date_gmt":"2024-04-24T00:12:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=161744"},"modified":"2024-12-10T17:15:56","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T23:15:56","slug":"cardiac-simulator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/cardiac-simulator\/","title":{"rendered":"Building \u00a0Heartbeats: Researcher Wins Award for Cardiac Simulator"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Martha Marciano \/CONECTA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/erika-garc%C3%ADa-l%C3%B3pez-71ab2451\/?locale=en_US&amp;trk=people-guest_people_search-card\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erika Garc\u00eda-L\u00f3pez<\/a> from the School of Engineering and Sciences has received the 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/tecnos.nl.gob.mx\/#:~:text=El%20Premio%20Tecnos%20Nuevo%20Le%C3%B3n%204.0%20est%C3%A1%20dise%C3%B1ado%20para%20reconocer,de%20soluciones%20alineadas%20a%20las\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tecnos Nuevo Le\u00f3n 4.0 Award<\/a> for developing a cardiac simulator which accelerates the recovery of patients suffering from heart disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs the most common cause of death around the world continues to be heart disease, we started working on a simulator.<strong> TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation)<\/strong> consists of placing an implant in the aorta of patients, particularly those over 60 years old,\u201d Garc\u00eda-L\u00f3pez explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cHeart Catgh Simulator&#8221;,<\/strong> which is an auxiliary medical device for cardiac procedures, is the name of the Tec de Monterrey project that won a prize in the \u201cHuman Coexistence in an Inclusive City\u201d category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research group led by Garc\u00eda-L\u00f3pez includes students and specialists in Mechatronics, Industrial, Electronics, Mechanics, and other fields found on the Monterrey campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project brings us to the forefront of science; we competed in the Tecnos Award because the project incorporates elements of digitization, manufacturing, sensors, and even cloud-based data acquisition,\u201d shared the teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/erika-garcia-tecnos-award.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/erika-garcia-tecnos-award.jpg\" alt=\"erika garcia cardiac simulator\" class=\"wp-image-161746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/erika-garcia-tecnos-award.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/04\/erika-garcia-tecnos-award-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Erika Garc\u00eda-L\u00f3pez, a professor at the Monterrey campus, was given the Tecnos Nuevo Le\u00f3n 4.0 Award for her \u201cHeart Catgh Simulator\u201d project. (Photo: Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-the-device-work\">How Does the Device Work?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The medical procedure known as TAVI consists of inserting the aortic valve through catheters, meaning that the sternum does not have to be opened (sternotomy), <strong>thus accelerating patients\u2019 recovery.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the aorta, there is a type of valve cusp which calcifies due to age and causes the valve to no longer have the same opening and closing ability, so a device is inserted,\u201d Garc\u00eda-L\u00f3pez explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The valve implant <\/strong>comprises 3 parts: a mesh that serves as a structure, three valve cusps that open and close, and a cover that surrounds the mesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, the team planned to undertake catheter navigability tests before inserting the implant. (Photo: Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-simulator-could-help-paramedics-and-students\">Simulator Could Help Paramedics and Students<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The device is in the <strong>testing stage<\/strong> and is currently being used on different segments of patients; the work on digitizing new anatomical models continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThanks to the support of the institution, we incorporated a flow pump into our anatomical model, so we now have a complete and functional cardio system.
