{"id":161873,"date":"2024-04-25T16:31:44","date_gmt":"2024-04-25T22:31:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=161873"},"modified":"2024-04-25T16:31:46","modified_gmt":"2024-04-25T22:31:46","slug":"researchers-personal-brand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/researchers-personal-brand\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Should Researchers Create a Personal Brand?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Although business cards, faxes, and printed resumes were the most efficient way to offer our professional services and connect with colleagues from other countries during the second half of the twentieth century, it has become indispensable for professionals to build a <strong>personal brand<\/strong> in the <strong>digital era<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Researchers<\/strong> form part of this sector. They can use <strong>websites<\/strong> or <strong>social networks<\/strong> such as LinkedIn, YouTube, X, or Instagram to disseminate their work, connect with academics from other universities, seek grants or sponsorships, expand their network of collaborators, and even promote their ventures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how do we build a <strong>successful personal brand<\/strong> and what tools can we as researchers use to create it? That\u2019s what the workshop given by <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong> experts during the <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/tag\/tec-science-summit\/\">Tec Science Summit<\/a> was all about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"As\u00ed fue la edici\u00f3n del Premio R\u00f3mulo Garza 2023 \ud83e\udd47\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CmrmaK2fDmE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-personal-brand\"><strong>What Is a Personal Brand?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your <strong>personal brand<\/strong> is defined as the image that other people have of you in the <strong>professional environment<\/strong> based on the <strong>values<\/strong> you project at work, your skills, your personality, and the emotional footprint you leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBuilding our <strong>personal brand<\/strong> requires <strong>constancy and tim<\/strong>e; it\u2019s not about our identity as individuals but about the sum of all the expectations, images, and perceptions we create in the minds of others when they see or hear our name,\u201d explains <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong> art editor <a href=\"https:\/\/conecta.tec.mx\/es\/noticias\/nacional\/arte-y-cultura\/editora-de-arte-mexicana-fue-jurado-en-los-oscar-del-diseno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Camila Ordorica<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it\u2019s a long-term endeavor, building a <strong>personal brand will help you<\/strong> stand out from the competition, position yourself in the labor market, make your work visible, develop your personal image, generate greater sales of your products or services, and open up opportunities for funding and developing new projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-should-i-start-developing-my-personal-brand\"><strong>How Should I Start Developing My Personal Brand?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong> experts recommend being clear about two things: <strong>story<\/strong> and <strong>visual identity<\/strong>. The first point asks us to take a deep look inside ourselves to identify our values, our abilities, who we are, and what we can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being clear about our <strong>story<\/strong> and aligning it with the values we want to convey will enable us to connect with our audience more effectively; we could define this as the \u201c<strong>heart<\/strong>\u201d of our <strong>personal brand<\/strong>, which requires two other components: \u201c<strong>expression<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>storytelling<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We should bear in mind that <strong>personal branding<\/strong> goes beyond our laboratory. <strong>Everything we do communicates <\/strong>something: our clothing, the language we use, and even our tone of voice. This is what \u201c<strong>expression<\/strong>\u201d refers to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Storytelling<\/strong>, on the other hand, involves communicating what we want to share <strong>clearly <\/strong>and <strong>fluently<\/strong> both in the texts we publish and in our social media posts and in any interviews we give.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, our <strong>story<\/strong> should come from the \u201cheart,\u201d take \u201cexpression\u201d and \u201cstorytelling\u201d into account, and should be aligned with the second component: a <strong>visual identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visual identity<\/strong> refers to the image we choose to post on our social networks (should we wear formal or casual clothes? should we wear a lab coat?), the profile name we go by (just our paternal surname?), and the color scheme we use when posting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When disseminating our work, it\u2019s also important to document it with photographs: we should be very clear about how to take the pictures and the angle of the shots. We should also be sure about what kind of message to include on social media so that the photos are aligned with our \u201c<strong>story<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-tools-could-help-me\"><strong>What Tools Could Help Me?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Visual identity can be a challenge for those of us who are not designers. However, there are many free tools that will help you develop your personal brand, such as<strong> Canva<\/strong>, which lets us edit photographs and create infographics and even presentations, and <strong>Adobe Color<\/strong>, which provides inspiration when choosing a color scheme for your social networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you would like to find out more about this topic, we recommend the following <strong>books<\/strong>: <em>Tribes<\/em> by Seth Godin, <em>Tu marca personal <\/em>by Hubert Rampersad, <em>Y t\u00fa, \u00bfqu\u00e9 marca eres<\/em> by Neus Aqu\u00e9s, <em>The Hero<\/em> <em>and the Outlaw<\/em> by Margaret Mark and Carol S.
