This research is being carried out at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.labmyn.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Laboratory for Microfluidics and Nanofluidics<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cideteq.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Research and Technological Development in Electrochemistry<\/a><strong>, <\/strong>(known in Spanish as <strong>CIDETEQ<\/strong>), which has been running since 2016 in the city of Quer\u00e9taro, Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hidrogeno.org.mx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/CV-Arriaga-Hurtado.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luis Gerardo Arriaga Hurtado<\/a>, leader of this national laboratory, explains that the goal of this research center is \u201cthe conversion of energy, storage, the use of hydrogen, liquid fuels (ethanol, glucose), CO2, and utilizing other <strong>non-conventional fluids<\/strong> such as sweat, blood, or urine, which have analytes that can be oxidized and may work as <strong>fuels<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweat, blood, and urine? Yes, you read that right. The laboratory, which is funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/conahcyt.mx\/\">National Council of Humanities, Science, and Technology<\/a> (known in Spanish as CONAHCYT), has developed a <strong>patch<\/strong> a few centimeters wide that\u2019s placed on the upper back of someone who\u2019s doing exercise to generate <strong>electricity<\/strong> from <strong>sweat<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen someone\u2019s sweating, we put a patch on them that generates energy from that sweat; we can also obtain information on their glucose levels from that fluid,\u201d explains Arriaga.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Laboratory for Microfluidics and Nanofluidics, which has been running since 2016, specializes in researching the <strong>behavior, manipulations, and control of fluids<\/strong> confined in structures on dimensions at the <strong>micro and nano scales<\/strong>. What\u2019s more, it\u2019s working on the development of devices such as the aforementioned patch and other types of biosensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u27a1\ufe0f Seminar: Novel electrocatalytic materials applied to microfluidic platforms.\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-Ww0fIh_1bM?start=427&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-other-projects-is-this-cideteq-lab-working-on\"><strong>What Other Projects Is This CIDETEQ Lab Working On?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding other projects developed at this <strong>CIDETEQ<\/strong> <strong>lab<\/strong>, Arriaga said during a <strong>seminar<\/strong> hosted by <strong>Tec de Monterrey\u2019s<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/tag\/institute-of-advanced-materials-for-sustainable-manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute of Advanced Materials for Sustainable Manufacturing<\/a>: \u201cWe\u2019ve developed electrodes to measure chlorine, which tell us about levels of dehydration, potassium, uric acid, and glucose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another of their developments focuses on <strong>electrocatalysts<\/strong> known as <strong>microfluidic fuel cells<\/strong>, which enables them to create energy conversion and storage systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese have two electrical conducting plates between which flows an oxidant with electrolyte and a fuel that enables us to produce energy, water, and reduce CO2,\u201d adds the specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past eight years, they have created <strong>seven generations of cells<\/strong> with dimensions from hundreds of microns across to the most recent version, in which the liquid flows through cavities in the 70 to 90 nanometer range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, the lab has collaborated on a project to develop <strong>miniature sensors<\/strong> capable of early detection of <strong>breast cancer cell<\/strong> formation. According to Arriaga, this emulates the functions of an organ on a chip that can eliminate or break down these cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the future, the lab will be working on an autonomous system to generate energy in microfluidic systems: \u201cThe idea is for the pressure of this liquid to generate a <strong>piezoelectric effect<\/strong>,\u201d remarks Arriaga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scientists from different disciplines are required to research and develop these devices, such as mathematical physicists, biotechnologists, programmers, nanotechnologists, and biomedical specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you find this story interesting?
