{"id":162204,"date":"2024-05-07T13:01:55","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T19:01:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=162204"},"modified":"2024-12-13T11:17:43","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T17:17:43","slug":"caetec-laboratory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tech\/caetec-laboratory\/","title":{"rendered":"Data for Science: This is How Tec&#8217;s Largest Laboratory Works"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>From reducing livestock&#8217;s methane emissions to improving irrigation methods and effectively using fertilizers, the Tec de Monterrey&#8217;s Experimental AGRO Field (CAETEC), located at KM 188 on the Mexico-Quer\u00e9taro highway, is consolidating as a large laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agricultural activities, size, conditions, and multidisciplinary talent that converge here, <strong>make it a perfect place to implement various projects for the private industry.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This experimental agricultural field is considered the largest laboratory Tec de Monterrey system has. We affectionately call it a &#8216;ranch,&#8217; <strong>but it is a large area with industry interconnections<\/strong>,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/arturo-glez-de-cosio-b-387a6969\/?originalSubdomain=mx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arturo Gonz\u00e1lez de Cos\u00edo<\/a>, director of CAETEC, says in an interview with <em>TecScience<\/em>. &#8220;What we are looking for is to generate data and manipulate that information <strong>to better understand how to change agriculture positively<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will tell you about some of the largest and most innovative projects in this vast &#8220;data farm&#8221; part of the Quer\u00e9taro Campus, to take advantage of the information and produce more sustainably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/CAETEC-field.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/CAETEC-field.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-162206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/CAETEC-field.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/CAETEC-field-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The entire field operates with precision agriculture, concentrating on every aspect of what occurs in open fields and interconnecting all kinds of machinery. (Photo: Amirhossein Hosseini \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-data-farm-at-the-service-of-academia-and-industry\">A Data Farm at the Service of Academia and Industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At first glance, CAETEC looks like a small 70-hectare ranch, but actually, it is a data farm. In the middle of the barley crops that sway in the wind, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/juan-ignacio-valiente-banuet-8108781b6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Juan Valiente<\/a>, a research professor in emerging food technologies and nutraceuticals, and a student obtain metrics of the barley to analyze its growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead, drip irrigation operates in greenhouses that contain dozens of varieties of peppers and tomatoes and is controlled in all aspects by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jos%C3%A9-antonio-ram%C3%ADrez-garc%C3%ADa-211a88aa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jos\u00e9 Antonio Ram\u00edrez,<\/a> an agricultural specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;At first, the &#8216;ranch&#8217; was the place where students of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/en\/bioengineering-and-chemical-processes\/bs-in-agricultural-biosystems-engineering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biosystems Agro-food Engineering career<\/a> performed their professional internships, but now, one could almost say that <strong>all agricultural production is a pretext for collecting data on what happens in the open field,<\/strong> greenhouses, and the stable&#8221;, explains Gonz\u00e1lez de Cos\u00edo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By interconnecting the machinery, specific and cross-referenced information is obtained, allowing them to <strong>offer the data to academia and the industry that desire to develop innovations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers from different Schools and Institutes of the Tec converge at CATEC to carry out projects in any of its four areas. This is the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_247653?_gl=1*c3w4y5*_ga*MTIxOTE0MzQ4OC4xNzE1MDQzNzk3*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*MTcxNTEwNDk4Ni4zLjEuMTcxNTEwNjU4My41NS4wLjA.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Balderas<\/a>, a research professor in the unit of enabling systems for sustainable manufacturing at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-of-advanced-materials-for-sustainable-manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute of Advanced Materials for Sustainable Manufacturing (IAMSM)<\/a>, who is developing two image detection systems for greenhouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first is aimed at identifying humidity, CO2 and particles, and the second at detecting diseases and pests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The goal is for this device to navigate inside the greenhouse an identify temperature changes in the plant; thus, viruses or a lack of water could be detected&#8221;, he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/CAETEC-agritech.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/CAETEC-agritech.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-162207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/CAETEC-agritech.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/CAETEC-agritech-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">In satellite monitoring, they use satellites or drones to capture precise data from a single plant  up to a 100, depending on the technology. (Photo: Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-precision-agriculture\">Precision Agriculture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The agricultural sector inside the ranch has three main areas: <strong>protected agriculture<\/strong>, including greenhouses; <strong>extensive agriculture<\/strong>, focusing on grains and forages; and<strong> fruit farming<\/strong>, particularly vineyards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technologies employed include GPS devices installed on tractors, <strong>akin to those used in aircraft<\/strong>, as well as soil sensors, drones, satellites, and software for data processing. For instance, a tractor equipped with GPS can communicate with a seeding machine through a sensor to determine if fertilizer application is necessary. Such sensor, SoilX, analyzes soil at four levels based on its physical and chemical characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;A tractor is no longer just a power machine; it&#8217;s a precision machine<\/strong>. This precision is built through data and information,&#8221; comments Gonz\u00e1lez de Cos\u00edo, who also mentions that CAETEC will liaise with tractor company John Deere, which plans to invest at least four million dollars in establishing a training center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both within and outside the greenhouse, CAETEC employs an <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a> system called IIVO by <a href=\"https:\/\/hoogendoorn.com\/en\/projects\/iivo-is-empowering-the-future-of-agribusiness-professionals-in-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hoogendoorn<\/a>. They sunbathe, rest, and eat whenever they want, and when they need to, <strong>they go to the milking line where Laval robot arms attach suction cups for milk extraction\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CAETEC is equipped with three out of five of these groundbreaking robots located in Mexico. Although adapting to this new milking method took about three years, the fact that cows live stress-free has resulted in increased production, and more importantly, everything is measurable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This, along with being a closed farm producing its fodder, is why <strong>Nestl\u00e9 chose CAETEC to develop<\/strong> a strategic global project to find actions that help <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/business-innovation\/casa-tech-mex-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduce methane emissions<\/a> produced by cow manure. Research lines will evaluate feeding, genetics, gastrointestinal processes, and cow feeding schedules to define best practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 50 years after its beginning, CAETEC is recognized as a laboratory where innovative solutions are developed, taking in consideration the environment, animal welfare, and human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If I take care of a single maize seed, I can have hundreds of maize seeds; it&#8217;s a multiplier effect. We generate value. And that value resides not only in the maize grain or seed itself but in all the products and services it will be used for,&#8221; concludes Gonz\u00e1lez de Cos\u00edo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested in this story?
