{"id":162244,"date":"2024-05-07T17:28:43","date_gmt":"2024-05-07T23:28:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=162244"},"modified":"2024-05-07T17:29:25","modified_gmt":"2024-05-07T23:29:25","slug":"how-humans-can-catch-bird-flu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/how-humans-can-catch-bird-flu\/","title":{"rendered":"How Humans Can (and Can\u2019t) Catch Bird Flu?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Last month, the World Health Organization <a href=\"\/es\/salud\/influenza-aviar-humanos\/\">(WHO) warned of a variant<\/a> of <strong>bird flu<\/strong> that affects humans and has been concerned about the continued <strong>genetic diversification of the virus<\/strong>, as well as its ability to infect a growing variety of species, but <strong>how is it transmitted <\/strong>and <strong>why does it worry experts<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bird flu H5N1<\/strong> has caused serious, sometimes fatal, infections among humans who have been infected and has long been on the list of viruses with pandemic potential; therefore, any expansion to a new species of mammals is worrying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An <strong>outbreak of bird flu <\/strong>among <strong>cattle herds in the United States<\/strong> led to the first known case of <strong>transmission <\/strong>between a <strong>cow <\/strong>and a <strong>human<\/strong>, after a Texas farm worker caught the virus. Previously, the <strong>H5N1<\/strong> had mostly been passed to humans through close contact with <strong>wild birds<\/strong> or <strong>infected poultry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-2-1024x694.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"694\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-2-1024x694.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-162249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-2-1024x694.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-2-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-2-768x521.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-2-1536x1042.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-2.jpg 1836w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The spread of<strong> bird flu<\/strong> to an increasing number of <strong>species<\/strong> and its widening<strong> geographic reach<\/strong> have raised the risks of humans being infected by the virus, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woah.org\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Organisation for Animal Health <\/a>(WOAH).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>infections in cattle<\/strong> are from the same subtype of bird flu that has been infecting <strong>wild birds <\/strong>and <strong>poultry flocks<\/strong> globally, also killing <strong>several mammal species<\/strong> that likely contracted the virus from consuming sick or dead birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-3-905x1024.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"905\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-3-905x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-162250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-3-905x1024.jpg 905w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-3-265x300.jpg 265w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-3-768x869.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-3-1357x1536.jpg 1357w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-3.jpg 1484w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 905px) 100vw, 905px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-does-bird-flu-also-put-other-species-at-risk\"><strong>Does Bird Flu Also Put Other Species at Risk?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, in fact, in February, a deadly type of <strong>bird flu<\/strong> was confirmed on the mainland of Antarctica for the first time. Scientists said it created a <strong>potential risk<\/strong> for the southern region\u2019s huge <strong>penguin<\/strong> colonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since <strong>H5N1<\/strong> arrived in <strong>South America <\/strong>in 2022, bird flu had already killed <strong>dolphins<\/strong>, some 50,000 <strong>seals<\/strong> and <strong>sea lions<\/strong> along the coasts, and at least half a million<strong> birds<\/strong>, in Chile and Peru.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While <strong>bird flu<\/strong> infections in <strong>humans<\/strong> are rare, they can be deadly when they happen. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there have been <strong>889 H5N1 infections in humans<\/strong> from 2003 to 2024. Of those, <strong>463 <\/strong>or 52% <strong>resulted in death<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-4-1024x903.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"903\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-4-1024x903.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-162251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-4-1024x903.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-4-300x265.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-4-768x678.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-4-1536x1355.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-4.jpg 1860w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. officials have strengthened measures to contain the further spread of the first known outbreak of H5N1 in <strong>dairy cows<\/strong>, which has now spread to herds in nine states and from there into the country\u2019s milk supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far there is evidence of wild bird-to-cow, cow-to-cow, cow-to-poultry, and one case of cow-to-human <strong>transmission<\/strong>. There is no evidence of human-to-human transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-5-1024x909.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"909\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-5-1024x909.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-162252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-5-1024x909.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-5-300x266.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-5-768x682.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/05\/bird-flu-in-humans-5.jpg 1320w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-it-safe-to-consume-milk-in-the-us\"><strong>Is It Safe to Consume Milk in the US?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of the heavy viral load in <strong>milk<\/strong> and mammary glands, scientists suspect the virus can spread between <strong>cattle<\/strong> during the milking process, either through contact with infected equipment or with virus that becomes aerosolised during cleaning procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One in five commercial <strong>milk <\/strong>samples tested in a nationwide survey contained particles of the <strong>H5N1 virus<\/strong>, according to the FDA.
