{"id":162620,"date":"2024-05-29T15:06:44","date_gmt":"2024-05-29T21:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=162620"},"modified":"2024-06-10T13:42:21","modified_gmt":"2024-06-10T19:42:21","slug":"abrahan-mora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/abrahan-mora\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexico is Commitment to Research: Abrahan Mora\u2019s Story"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One day, at the University of Loja in Ecuador, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/centrodelagua.tec.mx\/es\/semblanza\/dr-abrahan-rafael-mora-polanco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abrahan Mora<\/a><\/strong> came across a job listing that seemed to fit his qualifications perfectly. Within less than a year, <strong>he found himself in Mexico with a new job and a new home<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mora<\/strong>, now a professor and researcher at <strong>Tec de Monterrey<\/strong> specializing in water pollution, has always had a strong inclination for <strong>studying the environment directly in the environment itself<\/strong>, or as it is commonly referred to in science, &#8220;<strong>in the field<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He never envisioned himself working in an office, a company, or even a lab. So, he decided to study chemistry, which allowed him to spend <strong>time outdoors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He soon discovered that <strong>scientific work<\/strong> involves a combination of fieldwork, lab work, and writing <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/scientific-paper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scientific articles<\/a>, but for him, fieldwork is always the foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I believe it&#8217;s very important because, often, when writing a paper about a phenomenon, you can&#8217;t do it well if you don&#8217;t know what the field is like. Really, being in <strong>the field changes a person<\/strong>, changes their perspective on the phenomenon. It allows for a better analysis of the situation,&#8221; he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After earning a degree in Chemistry in Caracas, Venezuela, his home country, he pursued a PhD in Environmental Sciences in Madrid, Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He returned to Venezuela, where he experienced &#8220;the joy of working between the field, the lab, and writing research articles for over eight years.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the economic situation in his country led him to migrate first to Ecuador and then to Mexico. He is currently a research professor at the <strong>Puebla campus<\/strong>, focusing on <a href=\"\/es\/salud\/contaminacion-del-agua-subterranea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>detecting contaminants in bodies of water<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong>, Abrahan talked about his love for fieldwork, its importance in science, how he arrived in Mexico, and what it means to live and work here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"El potencial de los hongos para limpiar el agua\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OKfkhnRUGxc?start=11&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Subtitles Available in English<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Making the Most of a Crisis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Abrahan\u2019s journey to Mexico began in <strong>Venezuela<\/strong>, where he was driven by the economic crisis that started in 2013. \u201cEveryone knows the situation in Venezuela. In less than a year, due to inflation, <strong>my salary went from<\/strong>\u2014let\u2019s say\u2014<strong>$2,000<\/strong> a month <strong>to $40<\/strong>. It was practically unlivable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This led him to seek work outside his country. He spent a year as a researcher in <strong>Ecuador<\/strong>, and just before his contract ended, he came across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ResearchGate<\/a>, where scientific job listings are posted, among other things. He found that the <a href=\"\/es\/tag\/centro-del-agua\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Water Center<\/a> at Tec de Monterrey was looking for someone with his exact qualifications. \u201c<strong>It was the ideal job for me<\/strong>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He applied, and after a few months and several calls, he and his suitcases arrived in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What did you think when you arrived in Mexico?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was impressed. I didn&#8217;t expect Monterrey to be such a modern city; I was also very impressed with Tec because I didn\u2019t know it was so large. It\u2019s an institution that is very well organized and structured. You can tell they know what they\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Mexico, <strong>I found a genuine interest in research<\/strong> that I hadn\u2019t seen in other South American countries except Brazil. Mexico is committed to research, for example, with incentives like those from the <a href=\"https:\/\/conahcyt.mx\/sistema-nacional-de-investigadores\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National System of Researchers<\/a>. This is very important to me as it genuinely encourages quality research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Besides work, what do you like about Mexico?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The food in the central part of the country is out of this world; I love it. Mexico&#8217;s <strong>diversity of environments <\/strong>is impressive: jungles, deserts, and mountains with glaciers. For environmental chemists like me, there are plenty of places to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The downside is the pollution. (Illustration: Eduardo Ram\u00f3n)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Research and Love for Fieldwork<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What does your research involve?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I evaluate the behavior or evolution of <strong>contaminants in water systems<\/strong>, such as how they degrade or how their concentrations decrease and how this is related to other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of our most successful cases was working with nitrates. Thanks to this work, we won the <a href=\"\/es\/tag\/premio-romulo-garza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">R\u00f3mulo Garza Prize<\/a> in 2023. We used models to evaluate the sources of nitrates that cause water contamination so that we could devise management plans to minimize this contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re also <a href=\"\/es\/salud\/contaminacion-del-agua-subterranea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">studying arsenic, which is very common in the groundwater of the northern part of the country<\/a> because the rocks contain arsenic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>What excites you most about your work?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I love fieldwork<\/strong>. We go out, take samples, conduct experiments, observe the landscape, and make associations\u2014for instance, if a material layer affects the sample or the aquifer. All these are essential things to see. Another thing I love about my work is writing articles. If you do research and don\u2019t <strong>publish articles<\/strong>, it\u2019s as if you\u2019re not researching because you\u2019re not sharing that knowledge with society or the scientific community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s what drives me. I think that\u2019s what makes me happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Besides helping you understand what you study better, do you find any other value in going out into the field?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many things. For example, you share a lot with the people you work with; they tell you what they like about the research and the problems. You get to know them better. It\u2019s different from being in an office where everything is fast-paced. In the field, you can share and talk a lot. When it\u2019s time to eat, maybe you eat at a little stand and <strong>have the chance to connect on a human level<\/strong>, to get to know people, which is very important to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Does this human connection contribute to the research?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It contributes significantly because you <strong>build trust<\/strong>, realize people\u2019s potential, motivate them to do more, and encourage them to go further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mexico, a True Home<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Do you miss anything from Venezuela?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first years, I missed many things, like my family, my friends, and, of course, the food. But, over time, <strong>you miss something that no longer exists; it\u2019s something you remember<\/strong>. I visited Venezuela several times, and what I missed was no longer there. Missing is remembering things from the past with nostalgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Mexico, I have my partner and my children. I love Mexican food\u2014mole, pipi\u00e1n, pozole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Do you consider Mexico your home?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without a doubt.
