{"id":162699,"date":"2024-05-24T11:03:42","date_gmt":"2024-05-24T17:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=162699"},"modified":"2024-12-10T17:11:21","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T23:11:21","slug":"what-is-the-keto-diet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/what-is-the-keto-diet\/","title":{"rendered":"What Can You Eat on a Keto Diet and What It Is?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An article was recently published in which researchers from the <a href=\"\/en\/health\/keto-diet-accelerates-aging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Texas linked a continuous, long-term <strong>ketogenic<\/strong> or <strong>keto diet<\/strong> to <strong>accelerated organ aging<\/strong><\/a>, but <strong>what does the keto diet consist of?<\/strong> Where did the keto diet come from?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several decades ago, the media popularized <a href=\"\/en\/health\/types-of-diets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diets<\/a> supposedly used by celebrities to lose weight, including the <strong>keto diet<\/strong>, which is currently followed by about <strong>13 million people<\/strong> in the <strong>United States<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.uthscsa.edu\/a-long-term-ketogenic-diet-accumulates-aged-cells-in-normal-tissues-a-ut-health-san-antonio-led-study-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a paper<\/a> from the University of Texas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this famous diet plan had been around for a while. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionsource.hsph.harvard.edu\/healthy-weight\/diet-reviews\/ketogenic-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a Harvard University website<\/a>, \u201cIn the <strong>19th century<\/strong>, the ketogenic diet was commonly used to help control <strong>diabetes<\/strong>. In <strong>1920<\/strong>, it was introduced as a <strong>treatment for epilepsy<\/strong> in children in whom medication was ineffective.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The low-carbohydrate, high-fat <strong>ketogenic diet<\/strong> has also been <strong>tested and used<\/strong> in closely monitored settings for cancer, diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, and Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u00bfLa dieta keto es peligrosa para la salud? Esto dice la ciencia\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AauMSA1IpNE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Subtitles available in englis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is the Keto Diet?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there are several versions of the<strong> keto diet<\/strong>, most include \u201c<strong>foods high in saturated fat<\/strong>, such as fatty cuts of meat, processed meats, eggs, dairy, and butter, as well as sources of <strong>unsaturated fats<\/strong>, such as nuts, seeds, avocados, plant oils, and oily fish,\u201d says Harvard University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>foods that are not included<\/strong> in this type of diet plan are those rich in <strong>carbohydrates<\/strong>: starches from both refined and whole grains like bread, pasta, rice, and cookies, as well as potatoes, corn, starchy vegetables, most fruits, fruit juices, beans, and legumes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a nutshell, most of these types of <strong>ketogenic diets<\/strong> are based on a <strong>high fat intake<\/strong>, ranging from 70 to 80%, with <strong>moderate protein consumption<\/strong> and \u201c<strong>severely restricting<\/strong> <strong>carbohydrate<\/strong> intake with a goal of bringing it down to less than 50 grams per day,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7480775\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Advantages and Disadvantages of the Ketogenic Diet: A Review Article<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Does the Keto Diet Work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s remember that our body <strong>only stores fat and sugar.<\/strong> When we eat, <strong>carbohydrates<\/strong> including grains, legumes, starchy vegetables, and most fruits, are converted into <strong>glucose<\/strong>, which is the <strong>main source of energy<\/strong> for our cells.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keto diets don\u2019t include carbohydrates<\/strong>, so the body extracts the <strong>glucose stored<\/strong> in our liver and temporarily breaks down the muscles to release glucose. However, after three or four days, <strong>reserves are depleted<\/strong> and blood levels of a hormone produced in the pancreas (<strong>insulin<\/strong>) decrease.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, the body <strong>begins to use fat<\/strong> as its <strong>primary fuel source<\/strong>. The liver generates <strong>ketone bodies<\/strong> (hence the name ketogenic diet) that begin to be used in the absence of glucose. When these accumulate in the blood, something known as <strong>ketosis<\/strong> occurs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although most organs can function on this alternative fuel, the <strong>brain<\/strong>, <strong>red blood cells<\/strong>, and <strong>adrenal glands<\/strong> require some <strong>glucose<\/strong>, but how do they get it if there are no more reserves? During ketosis, the liver and kidneys produce their own sugar through a process called <strong>gluconeogenesis<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"La importancia de los l\u00e1cteos en la nutrici\u00f3n infantil\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0QN7-7ayMMc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who Can Follow a Keto Diet?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before starting a <strong>ketogenic diet<\/strong>, whether it\u2019s to lose weight or due to a specific illness, you should consult a <strong>doctor<\/strong> or <strong>nutritionist<\/strong> because there are metabolic effects that <strong>aren\u2019t suitable for every patient.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7480775\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Advantages and Disadvantages of the Ketogenic Diet: A Review Article<\/em><\/a>, which covers several investigations on the advantages and disadvantages of the <strong>keto diet<\/strong>, \u201cIt has been shown to effectively lead to <strong>weight loss<\/strong>, <strong>reduction in hyperinsulinemia<\/strong>, and improvement in <strong>insulin sensitivity<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, \u201cpatients diagnosed with <strong>diabetes<\/strong> on insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents <strong>may suffer severe hypoglycemia<\/strong> if their medication regimen is not properly managed during the initiation of a ketogenic diet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, by using <strong>fat reserves<\/strong> as fuel, the body demands a great deal of work from the <strong>liver, kidneys, and pancreas<\/strong>: \u201cThe <strong>keto diet<\/strong> is limited and <strong>contraindicated<\/strong> in patients with liver failure, pancreatitis, inborn disorders of fat metabolism, primary carnitine deficiency, carnitine palmitoyltransferase deficiency, carnitine translocase deficiency, porphyria, and pyruvate kinase deficiency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Long Can You Stay on a Keto Diet Safely?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One week ago, on May 17, 2024, a <strong>paper<\/strong> was published in <strong><em>Science Advances<\/em><\/strong> relating the <strong>keto diet<\/strong>, when consumed over a <strong>long period<\/strong> of time, to accelerated <strong>organ aging<\/strong> of the brain, heart, and liver, increasing the risk of heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this <a href=\"\/en\/health\/keto-diet-accelerates-aging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study by researchers at the University of Texas<\/a> also discovered that organ aging can improve by switching back to a standard diet, and their mice experiment even showed that following an <strong>intermittent keto diet<\/strong> (alternating with a regular one) does not increase this risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This finding has important clinical implications because patients with diseases such as <strong>refractory epilepsy<\/strong> who need to follow this diet plan could reduce the risks associated with the <strong>ketogenic diet<\/strong> by following it intermittently, although researchers point out that their results still need further study in humans.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another study published in 2020 titled <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32694683\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Ketogenesis activates metabolically protective \u03b3\u03b4 T cells in visceral adipose tissue<\/em><\/a> suggests that this diet may improve metabolism by activating tissue-specific resident immune cells, although a <strong>long-term<\/strong> continuous keto diet induces systemic inflammation, obesity, and glucose intolerance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7480775\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Advantages and Disadvantages of the Ketogenic Diet: A Review Article<\/em><\/a>, which carries out an in-depth analysis of recent research, concludes: \u201cBased on our review, within the <strong>first 6-12 months of initiating a ketogenic diet<\/strong>, transient decreases in blood pressure, triglycerides, and glycosylated hemoglobin, as well as increases in HDL (good cholesterol) and weight loss may be observed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever, <strong>the aforementioned effects are generally not seen after 12 months<\/strong> of therapy, as the changes reported in the studies we reviewed are not statistically significant. Further research is warranted to evaluate the long-term implications of a <strong>ketogenic diet<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, \u201cdespite the diet\u2019s favorable effect on HDL-C, the concomitant increases in LDL-C and very-low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) may increase <strong>cardiovascular risks<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAdditionally, the dietary restrictions required to sustain ketosis may actually lead to its <strong>low sustainability<\/strong>. Unfortunately, most available studies lack generalizability and validity due to their small sample sizes and short study durations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDue to the limited amount of robust studies and lack of strong evidence evaluating the diet\u2019s potential risks, recommendations supporting VLCKD (<em>Very Low Calorie Ketogenic Diet<\/em>) in patients with no comorbidities, or cardiometabolic and endocrinologic diseases should be made at the provider\u2019s discretion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
