{"id":162872,"date":"2024-05-31T16:29:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-31T22:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=162872"},"modified":"2025-02-20T12:57:07","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T18:57:07","slug":"microbiome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/biotechnology\/microbiome\/","title":{"rendered":"MicroBioMe: Tec Project Looking to Become an Innovative Company"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By: Arleth Delgadillo \/ CONECTA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MicroBioMe<\/strong> is an in vitro platform that mimics human gut microbiota conditions to speed up the validation<strong> of pharmaceutical and food products<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project, created by <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_130966\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tec Guadalajara<\/a> professors <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_139435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alejandro Garc\u00eda<\/a>, Abel Guti\u00e9rrez, and <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/es\/guadalajara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yocanx\u00f3chil Perfecto<\/a>, is still at the development stage but they want to turn it into an <strong>innovative company<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is to contribute to the study of the <strong>human gut microbiota<\/strong> without using test subjects, and it received support due to its participation in the Tec de Monterrey and <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/es\/tag\/tecsalud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TecSalud\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"\/en\/health\/health-pioneers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Health Pioneers<\/a> program, which made it possible to validate needs, scale up the technology, and obtain funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/microbiome-2.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/microbiome-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-162873\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/microbiome-2.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/microbiome-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Alejandro Garc\u00eda shows the team a graph of the project. (Photo: Dulce G\u00e1lvez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Does MicroBioMe Work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alejandro Garc\u00eda explains that <strong>MicroBioMe\u2019s<\/strong> line of research \u201cfocuses on <strong>synthetic ecosystems<\/strong>, which are understood to be a grouping of bacteria that represent and\/or are similar to conditions occurring in the human microbiota.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe <strong>microbiota<\/strong> is a complex system of thousands of microorganisms, which function through cross-feeding interactions; in other words, what serves as a substrate for one, together with the product it generates, can be a substrate for the second,\u201d explains Garcia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MicroBioMe<\/strong> was initially interested in finding out whether in vitro environments could be created through laboratory tests that simulate the characteristics of the intestine and microbiota. To this end, it uses mathematical <strong>tools<\/strong>, analytical methods, and data analysis to determine the beneficial effects and reduce the harmful effects of the products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re committed to positively impacting society in the area of health by becoming an agent of change. (Photo: Dulce G\u00e1lvez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Did Health Pioneers Benefit the MicroBioMe Project?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TecSalud\u2019s<\/strong> Health Pioneers is a support program that seeks to promote science- and\/or technology-based projects, and conducts needs analyses to refine technical aspects and consolidate the business model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaboration with Health Pioneers was important for <strong>MicroBioMe<\/strong> because the researchers behind this project are in the process of consolidating it as an innovative company that will allow them to find funding, compete for intellectual property rights, and obtain a U.S. patent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researcher Alejandro Garcia said that they performed needs <strong>analysis<\/strong> with leaders in the <strong>food and pharmaceutical industry<\/strong> during the Health Pioneers program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/microbiome-6.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/microbiome-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-162875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/microbiome-6.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/microbiome-6-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Research team professor Yocanx\u00f3chil Perfecto. (Photo: Dulce G\u00e1lvez)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>On the Role Played by Researchers as Agents of Change<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Garc\u00eda emphasized how the role of researchers has undergone significant transformation. Although they are still involved in the process of knowledge generation, they now also face the prospect of exploring alternative ways to develop <strong>projects that have social impact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most challenging thing is to define a problem. That can require the investment of a lot of time, but once you have it, the solutions have a greater impact,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The academic also stressed the importance of collaborating with other experts on social change and knowledge generation: \u201cIf we want a solution to have an effect, it\u2019s important to listen to those involved in the processes. In addition, knowledge is required in such diverse areas that the work should be <strong>multidisciplinary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very interested in ensuring that our innate talent for developing solutions to social problems is supported by methodologies that allow them to do precisely that,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MicroBioMe<\/strong> will continue to raise funds to validate and implement the project and will then seek funding through their startup. They are also currently reviewing their participation in a program with the Tec\u2019s Technology Transfer Office (TTO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Were you interested in this story?
