But <strong>what exactly are the applications of<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"\/es\/biotecnologia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biotechnology<\/a>?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com.mx\/books?id=_DVF11wX-sAC&amp;printsec=copyright&amp;redir_esc=y#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">introduction<\/a> to <a href=\"\/en\/biotechnology\/what-is-biotechnology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robert Bud&#8217;s seminal book<\/a>, <em>The Uses of Life: A History of Biotechnology<\/em>, he describes how the definition of biotechnology has always been somewhat elusive. Some see it as the use of <strong>microorganisms<\/strong> in industry, while others consider it the<strong> sequencing of living organisms&#8217; DNA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the book was published in 1993, the human genome hadn&#8217;t been fully mapped, nor had Dolly, the first cloned mammal, been born. Nevertheless, as cited in Bud&#8217;s work, the standard definition remains: \u201cIt is the <strong>application of scientific and engineering principles<\/strong> to <strong>process<\/strong> <strong>biological agents<\/strong> for the production of goods and services.\u201d Today, biotechnology finds its way into industries as diverse as healthcare, agriculture, and environmental management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u00bfQu\u00e9 es la biotecnolog\u00eda y por qu\u00e9 es tan importante?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QocwQ-PvDWM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Subtitles Available in English<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Applications of Biotechnology<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To better understand, TecScience spoke with <a href=\"\/en\/biotechnology\/cuauthemoc-licona\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cuauht\u00e9moc Licona<\/a>, Director of the <a href=\"\/es\/tag\/centro-de-biotecnologia-femsa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FEMSA Biotechnology Center<\/a> at Tec de Monterrey. He explains, &#8220;<strong>Biotechnology<\/strong> is a scientific field that uses living organisms to solve problems. This <strong>problem-solving aspect<\/strong> was crucial in my decision to pursue a career in this area.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He adds, &#8220;Ultimately, it&#8217;s an engineering discipline where the knowledge you apply has practical uses. By convention, we <strong>categorize biotechnology by color<\/strong>: <strong>white<\/strong>, <strong>red<\/strong>, and <strong>green<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Licona refers to the broad spectrum of <strong>biotechnology applications<\/strong>: <strong>green<\/strong> for agriculture and the utilization of agricultural waste, <strong>red<\/strong> for healthcare and drug development, and <strong>white<\/strong> for creating <a href=\"\/en\/biotechnology\/convert-co2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biomaterials to replace traditional fuels<\/a> and biodegradable products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s also a focus on environmental biotechnology, dealing with pollution removal or <a href=\"\/es\/divulgacion-ciencia\/conoce-los-principales-contaminantes-del-agua-y-sus-consecuencias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contaminant detection in water<\/a>, air, and food. And there\u2019s even <strong>blue biotechnology<\/strong>, which relates to the ocean, offering solutions to marine problems and opportunities,&#8221; he elaborates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_121157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cristina Chuck<\/a>, a <strong>biotechnology specialist<\/strong> at Tec de Monterrey, highlights that this discipline has been around for millennia, evident in foods and beverages like yogurt, wine, and beer\u2014products of <strong>fermentation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about using bacteria, fungi, and yeast to transform raw materials, produce enzymes, and merge the beauty of biology with practical processes,&#8221; she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chuck&#8217;s journey into biotechnology began after studying food engineering, drawn by the myriad applications in agriculture, livestock, enzyme production, and bio-product transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Licona points to the rapid <strong><a href=\"\/es\/tag\/proyecto-origen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advancement in DNA sequencing<\/a><\/strong> as one of the <strong>most significant biotechnological breakthroughs<\/strong>, allowing scientists to decode and understand the genetic makeup of countless organisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For me, it&#8217;s astonishing that we can now sequence anything alive and understand its DNA, where that information comes from, why it&#8217;s there, and its evolutionary processes,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Licona, another remarkable development is the technology that can detect a single drop of blood in a swimming pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <strong>biotechnology\u2019s agricultural applications<\/strong>, Chuck discusses genetic modifications to make seeds drought-resistant and better withstand sunlight and innovations in <strong>livestock breeding<\/strong> to produce more milk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<strong>In terms of raw material production and transformation<\/strong>, precision fermentation is a <strong>promising area<\/strong> for creating new ingredients and foods,&#8221; she shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chuck cites efforts to synthetically produce <strong>proteins identical<\/strong> to those found in <strong>milk<\/strong> for people who are lactose intolerant or to mitigate the environmental impact of dairy farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, altering dietary habits involves overcoming significant resistance due to ongoing misinformation about <a href=\"\/en\/biotechnology\/3d-printed-meat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biotechnological processes in food<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u00bfComer\u00edas una carne producida en un laboratorio? Now, we have technologies like phage therapy, where viruses are designed to treat <strong>bacterial infections<\/strong>,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversely, Cristina Chuck argues that while <strong>biotechnology<\/strong> played a pivotal role during the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/Covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Covid-19<\/a> pandemic, saving millions of lives, broader societal engagement is necessary to address complex challenges effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur problems are increasingly intricate, and <strong>I don&#8217;t believe technology alone can provide the answers<\/strong>.
