The storm brought heavy rains and flooding, <strong>resulting in four deaths, including three children.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">One of the victims was later identified by emergency services as a 15-year-old boy who was <strong>swept away by a current<\/strong> on the outskirts of Monterrey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">In both Nuevo Le\u00f3n, where Alberto caused the <strong>Santa Catarina River to overflow,<\/strong> and the coastal state of Tamaulipas, local authorities moved people to temporary shelters and suspended public activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">However, the storm delivered <strong>much-needed rain<\/strong> to large areas of Mexico, where some reservoirs had water levels as low as 8% due to <strong>prolonged drought<\/strong> and summer heatwaves. Authorities in Nuevo Le\u00f3n announced plans to redirect water from La Boca Dam as it neared its maximum capacity of around 40 million cubic meters due to the rains from Alberto. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Just a day earlier, officials had reported that the reservoir was only 35% full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"ONU alerta una temporada de huracanes por encima del promedio\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M1OheadPc1g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\">UN Weather Agency Anticipates Highly Active Hurricane Season<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) announced on June 14, just ahead of the summer season, that it expects <strong>a very active hurricane season <\/strong>and emphasized the necessity of <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/lessons-from-hurricane-otis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">early warnings <\/a>to save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;High ocean heat content and the anticipated development of La Nina event are expected <strong>to fuel a very, very, very active hurricane season this year,<\/strong>&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/es\/profile\/clare-nullis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Clare Nullis<\/a>, WMO spokesperson, told a briefing in Geneva. &#8220;It only takes one landfalling hurricane <strong>to set back years and years of socio-economic development.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) has forecast a range of <strong>17 to 25 named storms. The average is 14.<\/strong> Of those storms, eight to 13 are forecast to become hurricanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Atlantic hurricane season, which lasts from June to November, <strong>has recorded above average activity for eight consecutive years,<\/strong> WMO said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/flood-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Early warnings<\/a> have helped save lives,\u201d Nullis said.<br><br>\u201cThey&#8217;ve really cut the death toll dramatically, but even so the small island developing states in the Caribbean <strong>suffer disproportionately<\/strong> both in terms of economic losses and losses to life.\u201d<br><br>Between 1970 and 2021, tropical cyclones \u2013which include hurricanes\u2013 <strong>were the leading cause of reported human and economic losses <\/strong>worldwide, according to WMO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/Santa-Catarina-river-Alberto.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/Santa-Catarina-river-Alberto.jpg\" alt=\"Santa Catarina river overflows hurricane Alberto\" class=\"wp-image-163318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/Santa-Catarina-river-Alberto.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/06\/Santa-Catarina-river-Alberto-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A view shows the Santa Catarina river as tropical storm Alberto hits, in Monterrey, Mexico June 20, 2024. (Photo: Henry Romero \/ Reuters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">High Temperatures Will Trigger More Storms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Climate change is also expected to contribute to more storms<\/strong> over the Atlantic this hurricane season, as <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/we-reach-the-hottest-12-month-stretch-in-recorded-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warmer ocean waters<\/a> allow powerful storms to intensify more rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The climate crisis is making extreme weather events such as hurricanes and tropical storms<strong> more frequent and severe<\/strong>,&#8221; said Save the Children regional advisor Moa Cortobius. Some 35 million children are living in exposed areas and are at risk this season in the Atlantic, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) stated that Alberto would continue to bring heavy rains and flooding to parts of northeastern Mexico, likely causing <strong>&#8220;considerable flooding&#8221;
