{"id":163406,"date":"2024-06-24T12:58:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-24T18:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=163406"},"modified":"2024-12-10T17:07:15","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T23:07:15","slug":"dengue-cases-mexico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/dengue-cases-mexico\/","title":{"rendered":"Dengue Cases Surge by 385% in Mexico During Epidemiological Week 24 of 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Confirmed dengue cases in Mexico saw a <strong>staggering 385% increase<\/strong> during epidemiological week 24 of 2024, with 17,016 cases reported compared to 3,505 <strong>in the same period in 2023.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, a total of <strong>26 dengue-related deaths were reported<\/strong>, up from five deaths in the same timeframe in 2023, according to the weekly report &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gob.mx\/cms\/uploads\/attachment\/file\/922776\/Pano_dengue_24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dengue Epidemiological Panorama 2024<\/a>&#8221; from Mexico&#8217;s Ministry of Health (SSa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, 59% of confirmed cases are primarily concentrated in the states of <strong>Guerrero, Tabasco, Veracruz, Michoac\u00e1n, and Chiapas.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For dengue cases classified as alarming and severe, <strong>53% of the patients were men and 47% women.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Region of the Americas, the number of dengue cases recorded during the first half of 2024 <strong>exceeded the maximum number of cases historically reported<\/strong> in a year, as compared to all previously <a href=\"\/en\/health\/dengue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recorded years<\/a>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paho.org\/es\/documentos\/informe-situacion-no-22-situacion-epidemiologica-dengue-americas-semana-epidemiologica#:~:text=Entre%20las%20semanas%20epidemiol%C3%B3gicas%20(SE,de%20los%20%C3%BAltimos%205%20a%C3%B1os.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a> from the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cumulative incidence rate as of EW 23 of 2024 is<strong> 63 cases per 100,000 population<\/strong>, 510 cases (0.61%) were characterized as severe and 26 fatal cases were recorded (case fatality rate 0.031%).<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"ONU alerta una temporada de huracanes por encima del promedio\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M1OheadPc1g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preventive Actions to Eradicate Dengue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dengue is a disease caused by a virus and transmitted to humans through<strong> the bite of an infected <em>Aedes aegypti <\/em>mosquito<\/strong>, according to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dengue is not transmitted from person to person, and currently, there is no vaccine available to combat it. It has a seasonal behavior pattern, peaking during the <a href=\"\/en\/health\/what-causes-heat-waves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warmer<\/a> and rainier months, which prompts preventive actions during the<strong> rainy or hurricane <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/tropical-storm-alberto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">seasons.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> mosquito prefers to lay its eggs in artificial containers holding water (such as drums, barrels, and tires) in and around homes, schools, and workplaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The eggs<strong> can withstand dry environmental conditions for more than a year.<\/strong> This is one of the species&#8217; key strategies for survival and propagation, according to the WHO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response, state health departments in places like Oaxaca and Guerrero have implemented measures such as mass elimination of breeding sites, larviciding, and thermal fogging to prevent mosquito proliferation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On an<strong> individual level,<\/strong> avoiding contact with this insect involves keeping patios and rooftops clean, covering containers, washing those that collect water, and eliminating those no longer in use to <strong>prevent breeding grounds within households.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using larvicides or specialized insecticides to eliminate adult mosquitoes is recommended, but care should be taken not to harm other <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/insect-extinction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local insect<\/a> or animal species, as some, like dragonflies, help <strong>control the <em>Aedes aegypti<\/em> population.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Symptoms of Dengue?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dengue is a febrile illness that affects infants, children, and adults. The infection can be asymptomatic or present symptoms that appear after an <strong>incubation period of 4 to 7 days<\/strong>, ranging from moderate fever to debilitating high fever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three different manifestations of the disease:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dengue Fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hemorrhagic Fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hemorrhagic Shock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms include fever, bone pain, severe headache (mainly in the forehead), eye pain (worsened by eye movement), skin rash (similar to measles), <strong>nausea, vomiting, insomnia, itching,<\/strong> loss of appetite, and abdominal pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disease <strong>can progress to severe dengue<\/strong>, characterized by shortness of breath, severe bleeding or severe organ complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In severe cases, symptoms may include<em> <\/em><strong>hemorrhage, convulsions due to fever, and severe dehydration.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other recommended precautions include <strong>wearing clothing that covers most of the body, using mosquito repellent, <\/strong>installing screens on windows and beds, and avoiding garbage accumulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
