{"id":163491,"date":"2024-07-04T11:31:08","date_gmt":"2024-07-04T17:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=163491"},"modified":"2024-09-17T14:44:00","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T20:44:00","slug":"what-is-gentrification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/what-is-gentrification\/","title":{"rendered":"What Gentrification Is And What It Isn&#8217;t"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Since the pandemic, with the arrival of digital nomads and the increase in foreign tourists in Mexico, the discussion about <strong>gentrification<\/strong> has intensified, but do we really know <strong>what it is <\/strong>and what are its <strong>consequences<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe term has become very <strong>generalized<\/strong> and <strong>overused<\/strong>,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geografia.unam.mx\/geoigg\/investigacion\/c_v.php?usr=MTYz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luis Salinas<\/a>, researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geografia.unam.mx\/geoigg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute of Geography<\/a> of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the expert, this can lead people to <strong>confuse its meaning<\/strong>, which could strip the word of the <strong>critical force<\/strong> with which it should be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u00bfQu\u00e9 es la gentrificaci\u00f3n?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uEkZ4oUrbEw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Gentrification?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To understand <strong>what gentrification is<\/strong>, let&#8217;s go back in history. The concept was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/bartlett\/ideas\/ruth-glass-and-coining-gentrification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coined by sociologist Ruth Glass<\/a>, who compiled several academic essays, from various disciplines, that described the physical, economic, demographic, commercial and cultural transformations of some central London neighborhoods <strong>in 1964<\/strong>. In the introduction <strong>she wrote<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne by one, many of London&#8217;s working-class neighborhoods have been invaded by the middle, upper and lower classes. Once this process of \u2018<strong>gentrification<\/strong>\u2019 begins in a district, it continues rapidly until all or most of the original working-class occupants are displaced and the entire social character of the district changes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the term has evolved and has been studied from new perspectives, the<strong> background of criticism<\/strong> that <strong>Glass<\/strong> gave it is preserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Salinas, <strong>gentrification <\/strong>is \u201ca <strong>physical and social transformation<\/strong> of a space, which has to do with investment in from the real estate and commercial sector, or with public or private interventions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Physical changes<\/strong> may include the appearance of new buildings, the increase in green areas -such as parks- or the installation of lighting on streets that did not have it. <strong>Socially<\/strong>, a <strong>demographic restructuring<\/strong> is observed, with the arrival of a population with greater economic and cultural capital that displaces the original population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gentrification Myths<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of us think that seeing foreigners on the streets of Mexico City means there is <strong>gentrification<\/strong> and that they are to blame for the fact that housing and food prices have increased so much in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a <strong>xenophobic discourse<\/strong> that has spread very strongly, but it is not a question of nationality,\u201d says Salinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another <strong>myth<\/strong> is that <strong>gentrification<\/strong> can be defined from a <strong>visual point of view<\/strong>: \u201cIf a neighborhood is suddenly filled with designer stores, cafes and people with beards, that is not enough to say that it exists,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ernestolopezmorales\/?original_referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Egoogle%2Ecom%2F&amp;originalSubdomain=cl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ernesto L\u00f3pez-Morales<\/a>, researcher and professor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uss.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Sebasti\u00e1n University<\/a>, Chile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way to know it exists is to <strong>measure<\/strong> how much the <strong>costs <\/strong>of access to <strong>housing<\/strong> -rent or sale- have increased and if there have been <strong>displacements<\/strong> associated with that increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If <strong>prices<\/strong> have skyrocketed, above the annual adjustment for inflation, and the <strong>original population<\/strong> who lived there have left because they can no longer afford it, then there is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On social networks it has also been reported that tourist destinations seek to <strong>eliminate local customs<\/strong> to please visitors, calling it gentrification. A very famous case was when on the beaches of Sinaloa, a Mexican northern state, its residents were asked to stop playing banda music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis phenomenon is known as the <strong>fading of the popular<\/strong>, where certain traditions or cultural aspects become invisible or lost, or, on the other hand, are commodified,\u201d says Salinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can be observed in cases such as the one in Sinaloa or when a drink or food that used to be consumed by people with low resources -such as pulque- starts being sold in exclusive stores with high prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are <strong>negative processes<\/strong> that can accompany <strong>gentrification<\/strong>, but they are <strong>not the same<\/strong>,\u201d says Salinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The consequences of gentrification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For experts, learning to <strong>differentiate gentrification<\/strong> from other social phenomena is a way of affirming the critical stance with which they believe it should be used, since it has <strong>negative consequences<\/strong> for society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main problem is the <strong>displacement of the local population<\/strong>, forced to leave their home and move somewhere affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, this supplanting is <strong>not physical, but social<\/strong>: \u201cThey may not be forced to leave the space, but there is an <strong>expulsion<\/strong> and an <strong>uprooting<\/strong> from the activities of their neighborhood,\u201d says L\u00f3pez Morales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the increase in prices for housing, food or recreational activities, people lose access to different places or are <strong>excluded<\/strong> from neighborhood gatherings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>Latin America<\/strong>, those who are displaced are often <strong>racialized individuals<\/strong>, who live in poverty or have <strong>low<\/strong> economic, educational or cultural <strong>resources<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/07352166.2021.1939040?scroll=top&amp;needAccess=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gentrification is particular to the specificities<\/a> of each neighborhood, city or country, there are common features. \u201cYou no longer see the people who used to walk in the streets and <strong>another type of dynamic is established<\/strong>, more aimed at consumption and not so much at coexistence,\u201d says Salinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is There Anything Good In Gentrification?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to researchers, sometimes the <strong>State<\/strong> is the main promoter of <strong>gentrification<\/strong>, justifying the arrival of large real estate or commercial companies under the discourse of urban regeneration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may lead some people to think that it is not always negative, since there are physical improvements to the space and more jobs can be generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given this perspective, Salinas invites us to question <strong>who these improvements are for<\/strong> and <strong>who will be able to enjoy them<\/strong>. \u201cI study gentrification from a critical perspective,\u201d he says. \u201cFor me, it is clearly negative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Allowing the entry of companies or developers, such as Airbnb or BeGrand, without any regulation has <strong>economic motivations<\/strong>, where entrepreneurs -who may be foreign or local- seek to profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo one builds for free, but in these cases there is an excessive profit and the<strong> value of use is lost,<\/strong>\u201d says L\u00f3pez-Morales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can gentrification be stopped?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussing the impacts of this phenomenon is important to <strong>find ways to avoid it<\/strong>. \u201cIt is not about reaching a romanticism where nothing changes, cities are alive and will transform over time,\u201d says Salinas. \u201cWhat should exist is the possibility for all sectors of the population to enjoy them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, there are no clear measures to stop it, with some isolated efforts in different countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, there should be new <strong>public policies<\/strong> that regulate the increase in prices for access to housing, food and essential products. Also, the State should prioritize the well-being of <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/architecture-to-reduce-vulnerabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all sectors<\/a> of the population, not just that of the wealthiest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMexican institutions are not concerned or looking to stop it,\u201d says Salinas. \u201cIt&#8217;s all about attracting capital, regardless of the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, <strong>an organized and informed society<\/strong> seems like the<strong> most viable solution<\/strong> to stop its repercussions. \u201cGentrification is not something cities should be proud of, but something they should be concerned about,\u201d says L\u00f3pez-Morales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Were you interested in this story?
