Moderna announced<\/a> positive results for its phase 3 clinical trial<\/strong> of a combined vaccine against COVID-19<\/a> and influenza. So what exactly did the trial find? And what sort of impact would a two-in-one COVID-19 and flu vaccine<\/strong> have on public health? Jaya Dantas<\/a>, International Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and Professor of International Health at Curtin University, explains the implications in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Combination Vaccines Are Already Used for Other Diseases<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Combination vaccines have been successfully used for several decades in Australia and around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, the DTP vaccine, a shot that combines protection against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis<\/em> (whooping cough)<\/strong>, was first administered in 1948.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The DTP vaccine has since been further combined to offer protection against other diseases. A hexavalent vaccine<\/a>, which protects against six diseases \u2013 diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenzae<\/em> type b<\/strong> (an infection that can cause brain swelling) \u2013 is today part of routine childhood immunisation programs around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important combination vaccine is the MMR vaccine, given to children to protect against measles, mumps and rubella.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
