Their innovations target <strong>the next generation of sensors<\/strong> to enhance diagnostic techniques and enable early <a href=\"\/en\/health\/artificial-intelligence-and-breast-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">disease detection<\/a> with greater precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, SytoSol is actively developing products aimed primarily at two conditions: <strong>lung cancer and glaucoma<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lung cancer is often diagnosed in <strong>advanced stages in nearly 80% of patients<\/strong>, with only 30% surviving five years post-diagnosis. Meanwhile, glaucoma, characterized by<strong> increased eye pressure<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24974815\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">affects over 75 million people worldwide<\/a>, yet half may be unaware of their condition. They are composed of a material developed here at Tec de Monterrey,&#8221; Mart\u00ednez explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding lung cancer detection, SytoSol is creating a device intended as <strong>an alternative to techniques like low-dose X-ray computed tomography<\/strong>. Martinez said these radiographs as &#8220;not timely&#8221; because they often detect the disease only in advanced stages and are inaccessible due to high costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This sensor operates using a blood serum sample to identify the presence of a <strong>biomarker<\/strong> called <strong>Cyfra 21-1<\/strong>, even in low concentrations, indicating early disease development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Under these conditions, physicians can administer more effective treatments to help patients manage cancer progression,&#8221; Mart\u00ednez noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Detecting Glaucoma<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SytoSol&#8217;s second application focuses on measuring <strong>VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) protein<\/strong> concentration, which signals blood vessel growth in the ocular globe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients diagnosed with <a href=\"\/en\/health\/carlos-aguilar-salinas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diabetes<\/a>, particularly, may experience insufficient oxygen in the ocular globe, prompting the body to produce VEGF, resulting in excessive eye growth and <strong>potential vision loss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Currently, <strong>there isn&#8217;t a simple technique for ophthalmologists to measure this protein in their office<\/strong>. With such a tool, proactive measures like medication to inhibit blood vessel growth could be implemented,&#8221; added Mart\u00ednez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology for Biomarker Measurement, Even at Low Concentrations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SytoSol employs <strong>electrochemical sensors to detect established biomarkers<\/strong> for each condition, capable of identifying various markers. These miniature sensors consist of <strong>electrodes (SytoSol EC)<\/strong>, comprising <strong>small metallic structures<\/strong> where <strong>electrical signals are inserted and extracted<\/strong> for concentration measurement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These electrodes undergo a process called <strong>functionalization<\/strong> to modify their surfaces, crucial for differentiating the biomarker we aim to detect,&#8221; Mart\u00ednez elaborated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed and developed by researchers at Tec de Monterrey, these electrodes have <strong>two patents on their manufacturing process<\/strong> and are capable of detecting minute concentrations of biomarkers, facilitating the <strong>early detection of diseases <\/strong>when treatments can be more effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, these electrodes are constructed using <strong>carbon substrates (SytoSol SERS)<\/strong> and <strong>micro-manufactured gold nanoparticles<\/strong>, derived from a patented high-temperature pyrolysis process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SytoSol&#8217;s Journey in Healthcare<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, <strong>the global biosensor market was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emergenresearch.com\/es\/industry-report\/biosensores-mercado#:~:text=El%20tama%C3%B1o%20del%20mercado%20global,durante%20el%20per%C3%ADodo%20de%20pron%C3%B3stico.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">valued at over $25 billion<\/a><\/strong>, with an anticipated annual growth rate nearing 8% over the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently seeking investors to advance biosensor prototyping, <strong>SytoSol aims to secure $400,000 in funding<\/strong>. Their <strong>Technology Readiness Level (TRL 3)<\/strong> involves laboratory parameter measurement, with near-term objectives of developing <strong>functional biosensor prototypes by late 2025<\/strong> and progressing towards <strong>clinical validation and regulatory testing by 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re focused on enhancing the robustness of these sensors, simulating and evaluating them under hospital-like conditions.
