{"id":163658,"date":"2024-07-15T15:48:13","date_gmt":"2024-07-15T21:48:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=163658"},"modified":"2024-12-13T11:16:32","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T17:16:32","slug":"energy-efficiency-cargo-trucks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tech\/energy-efficiency-cargo-trucks\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers Develop Energy Efficiency Labeling Program for Cargo Transport Vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A team of researchers from <a href=\"http:\/\/tec.mx\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tec de Monterrey<\/a> <strong>monitors trucks and other cargo transport vehicles<\/strong> in Colombia using GPS to <strong>assess their emissions and fuel consumption levels<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative forms part of a<strong> labeling program<\/strong> aimed at providing companies and governments in Colombia with information on the <strong>energy efficiency<\/strong> of these units. It aims to determine whether these vehicles use <strong>fuel efficiently and quantify the CO2 emissions<\/strong> produced during their operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Similar to nutritional labels on food products, this program will reveal whether a company&#8217;s fleet of cargo transport vehicles operates efficiently in terms of energy (fuel) usage and environmental impact<\/strong>. It will also allow for comparisons between different transport companies, serving as a reference when selecting the most suitable vehicle types based on specific needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program is being developed by professors from the <strong>Sustainable Energy Research Group at Tec de Monterrey<\/strong> in collaboration with researchers from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.udea.edu.co\/wps\/portal\/udea\/web\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Antioquia<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eafit.edu.co\/institucional\/english\/Paginas\/english-version-universidad-eafit-medellin-colombia-south-america.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Universidad EAFIT<\/a> <\/strong>in Colombia and the Chilean telemetry company <strong>INWAY<\/strong>. The Inter-American Development Bank is providing funding as part of efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the cargo transport industry in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen examining the composition of the vehicle fleet in cities, <strong>these types of vehicles represent less than 10%<\/strong>. However, they operate continuously, <strong>resulting in high fuel consumption<\/strong>,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_23028\">Jos\u00e9 Ignacio Huertas<\/a>, a research professor at Tec de Monterrey and leader of the <strong>Standards for Energy Efficiency and Labeling project for cargo transport vehicles in Colombia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The labeling program also aims to influence <strong>public policies in Colombia to promote the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions<\/strong> generated by the road freight transport sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Energy Efficiency Labeling to Reduce Environmental Impact<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks<\/strong> account for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate-transparency.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Colombia-CT-2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>42% of CO2 emissions<\/strong> <\/a>from all transportation modes in Colombia. Additionally, heavy vehicles running on diesel are responsible for <strong>40% of the national energy consumption<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Energy consumption represents<strong> around 50% of operational costs<\/strong> for transport companies. Moreover, these businesses and their clients are subject to <strong>government regulations limiting CO2 emissions<\/strong>, prompting them to focus increasingly on reducing this indicator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Latin American countries like <strong>Colombia <\/strong>and <strong>Mexico<\/strong> have committed to <strong>reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 to 50% by 2030<\/strong> compared to 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>energy efficiency labeling program<\/strong> aims to drive the road freight sector towards <strong>reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 20%<\/strong>. It provides categorized data that can be used for comparisons and analysis based on various criteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program includes three indicators to assess the emissions of<strong> CO2 per ton\/kilometer<\/strong> transported by <strong>heavy-duty vehicles<\/strong> with a capacity exceeding 3.5 tons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; The first indicator calculates fuel <strong>consumption per region<\/strong>, considering factors such as gradients and altitude, using GPS data to analyze vehicle routes on different road corridors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Another indicator focuses on the<strong> technology<\/strong> manufacturers use to equip these vehicles. In Latin America, cargo transport predominantly operates with <strong>diesel engines<\/strong> and systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; The final indicator evaluates<strong> company operations and vehicle usage<\/strong>, including logistics, maintenance, and driver programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Telemetry: Key to Monitoring Cargo Transport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, <strong>researchers monitor over 500 cargo transport units<\/strong> by leveraging <strong>GPS and telemetry data <\/strong>from companies like INWAY. Telemetry involves techniques for <strong>collecting data remotely through wireless transmission technologies<\/strong> to monitor equipment, operations, and systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Since 2000, it has been mandatory for these vehicles to have a port in their engines that allows us to <strong>connect and request information <\/strong>on their consumption, RPMs, or location,&#8221; adds Huertas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through telemetry, <strong>researchers obtain real-time data during normal vehicle operations<\/strong>, storing it in the cloud for accessibility from any internet-connected device. They process this information using <strong>mathematical methodologies to assess energy efficiency and emissions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We <strong>evaluate a vehicle&#8217;s performance<\/strong> and compare it against others in terms of efficiency. We then classify them as high, medium, or low performers and assign a label that reflects these values,&#8221; Huertas explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative also proposes that <strong>road freight companies <\/strong>openly share their labeling information on a website or digital platform, making it accessible and understandable to the general public for informed decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Huertas notes that three <strong>Colombian government entities are interested in implementing regulations based on this program<\/strong>. The project, initiated in March of this year, is expected to be completed by late 2024, with progress currently around 50%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is a stark contrast with private or light vehicles; currently, governments lack systems to regulate their operations.
