{"id":163768,"date":"2024-07-19T15:49:51","date_gmt":"2024-07-19T21:49:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=163768"},"modified":"2025-02-20T12:52:05","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T18:52:05","slug":"industrial-lubricant-made-with-prickly-pear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/biotechnology\/industrial-lubricant-made-with-prickly-pear\/","title":{"rendered":"An organic industrial lubricant made with prickly pear"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Given the environmental issues represented by the <strong>use of industrial lubricants made with petroleum or mineral oil<\/strong>, Mexican researchers created an alternative <strong>using prickly pear<\/strong> -a family of cacti that is consumed as food in Mexico and Latin America- to create <strong>an organic lubricant that has the same performance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Industrial lubricants are among the <em>best-selling products globally<\/em>, guaranteeing the proper functioning of different machinery. However, those that are created from petroleum or its derivatives are harmful to <strong>the environment<\/strong> and <strong>human health<\/strong>, which is why efforts are being made <strong>to produce biodegradable options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCurrently, new alternatives (for lubricants) are being proposed, but <strong>only a few of them meet the necessary requirements for proper functioning<\/strong>,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_328408?_gl=1*81cta3*_gcl_au*MTI5Mzg0Mjg4Ny4xNzIxNjgwNTUxLjEyODgwMDg1MDAuMTcyMTY5NjU0OC4xNzIxNjk2NTQ3*_ga*MTk1MjkyODI5Mi4xNzIxNjgwNTUx*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*MTcyMTY5NjQyOC4yLjEuMTcyMTY5NjU5Ny40LjAuMjI1NDA4MTM5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leonardo Farf\u00e1n<\/a>, research professor at the Department of Mechanics and Advanced Materials at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-engineering-and-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Engineering and Sciences<\/a> (EIC), <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/campus-puebla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Puebla Campus<\/a>, at Tec de Monterrey, in an interview with <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These products are substances that extend the useful life of machinery, such as car engines, by <strong>reducing friction and temperature, and lubricating its moving parts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>aerospace, automotive and construction<\/strong> industries are some of the ones that use them the most. Due to their importance, the industrial lubricant market has grown continuously with an estimated value of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketsandmarkets.com\/Market-Reports\/industrial-lubricants-market-84594070.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">63.9 billion dollars<\/a> today and is <strong>predicted to grow to 74.3 billion by 2029<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNormally they are made with mineral oil or oil derived from petroleum,\u201d explains Farf\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When used, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6720566\/#:~:text=As%20soil%20is%20an%20environment,the%20ecosystem%20may%20be%20disturbed.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">release waste from these oils in the form of vapor or tiny droplets<\/a> that <strong>pollute the air, water and soils of ecosystems<\/strong>. It also has consequences on human health, such as skin diseases or irritation of different parts of the body of those who are in close contact with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, the negative impacts they have caused a need to replace existing ones with others<strong> made from renewable sources<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor this reason, we sought to use t<strong>he mucilage of this cactus to create a biodegradable option,<\/strong>\u201d says the researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Water-Based Industrial Lubricant Made With Prickly Pair Mucilage <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To respond to the increase <strong>in demand for non-harmful lubricants<\/strong>, Farf\u00e1n led a team, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Jose-Perez-Gonzalez-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jos\u00e9 P\u00e9rez<\/a> from the Higher School of Physics and Mathematics of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), that created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2075-4442\/12\/2\/56\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a water-and-cactus-based lubricant<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prickly pairs contain a substance called mucilage \u2013that slimy stuff they release when cooked\u2013 which is <strong>viscous<\/strong> due to its <strong>hight content of lipids and fatty acids<\/strong> as well as <strong>soluble in water<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe proposed the idea of \u200b\u200bevaluating it as a possible substitute for mineral oil and the emulsifier,\u201d says the expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By generating mixtures of this substance with water, they <strong>created a fluid with properties very similar to those of petroleum-based oils<\/strong> used in commercial lubricants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They tested different types and concentrations of this plant substance, and did performance tests until they found the perfect formula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To their surprise, these mixtures not only <strong>increase the viscosity of the fluid<\/strong> \u2013as do commonly used oils\u2013 but also increase its elasticity, \u201cwhich does not normally happen with other additives,\u201d says Farf\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When comparing the performance of their biodegradable lubricant with that of a commercial one based on petroleum derivatives in different machinery, they found that it was equally functional and that <strong>the solution with the highest mucilage content was the one that resulted in the least wear, friction, and temperature.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter it is used, <strong>it evaporates into the environment and disappears<\/strong>,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manufacturing Costs Are the Challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The researcher says that the manufacturing technology they used to create the organic lubricant is complex and expensive, so the product <strong>is still in its initial stages to eventually reach the market<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, <strong>they are working on a patent to register their product<\/strong> and advance to the next steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something positive is that through different studies they were able to <strong>verify that their product is competitive in terms of performance<\/strong>, which represented a great challenge for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cProducts made with (petroleum) derivatives have been adapted to present the highest performance,\u201d contrasts the expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to proving that their product is just as functional, the fact that it is <strong>obtained from a product that is abundant locally<\/strong>, <strong>such as the prickly pear,<\/strong> contributes to making it a sustainable product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs Mexicans we are producers of <em>nopal<\/em>, so using it to create <strong>organic lubricants <\/strong>can have a positive impact on our society,\u201d says Farf\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Were you interested in this story?
