{"id":163803,"date":"2024-07-24T17:36:46","date_gmt":"2024-07-24T23:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=163803"},"modified":"2024-12-10T17:06:03","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T23:06:03","slug":"microbiota-and-obesity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/microbiota-and-obesity\/","title":{"rendered":"The Link Between Intestinal Microbiota and Obesity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our intestinal <a href=\"\/en?s=microbiota\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microbiota<\/a> \u2013the group of bacteria, fungi and viruses that inhabit our gastrointestinal tract\u2013 <strong>could explain why some people tend to have overweight or obesity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe combination of microorganisms that compose it carry out processes that can change <strong>from one person to another the way energy is obtained,<\/strong>\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/ciatej.mx\/investigacion\/investigador\/dra-marisela-gonzalez-avila\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Marisela Gonz\u00e1lez<\/a>, a researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ciatej.mx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Research and Assistance in Technology and Design<\/a> of the State of Jalisco (CIATEJ), in an interview with <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on where they are located \u2013the skin, the ears, the mouth\u2013 the organisms that conform the <a href=\"\/en\/health\/microbiota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microbiota<\/a> carry out processes that are essential for the functioning of our body. In the case of those that inhabit our intestines,<strong> they achieve metabolic activities that we cannot do on our own.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome examples include the synthesis of protein precursors or short-chain fatty acids and the <a href=\"https:\/\/gut.bmj.com\/content\/71\/1\/215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">degradation of lactose<\/a>,\u201d explains Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent times, the association between the microbiota and different aspects of human health has been increasingly studied, however, most research has focused on bacteria and not so much on <strong><a href=\"\/en\/science-communication\/bacteria-fungi-gut-microbiota\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fungal elements<\/a> such as yeasts and fungi.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this, there is evidence that these elements are involved in processes such as our eating patterns,<strong> generating a need to consume foods high in sugar<\/strong>, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To deepen our knowledge on this subject, a group of researchers from CIATEJ, the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-medicine-and-health-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Medicine and Health Sciences<\/a> (EMCS) and the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-engineering-and-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Engineering and Sciences<\/a> (EIC) of Tec de Monterrey <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33586805\/\">analyzed<\/a> <strong>the relationship between yeasts and fungi in the intestinal microbiota and obesity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis could be useful for health personnel, such as nutritionists or gastroenterologists, who seek to <strong>involve the microbiota<\/strong> in the treatment of different conditions,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33586805\/\">Ricardo Garc\u00eda<\/a>, a postdoctoral researcher at the EMCS, <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/campus-guadalajara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Guadalajara Campus<\/a>, who also participated in the study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Rompiendo estereotipos sobre la obesidad\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zxPRtNqYMy8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Study the Microbiota Fungi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/en\/health\/years-of-healthy-life-obesity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Overweight and obesity<\/a> are some of the biggest public health problems in Latin America and Mexico, <strong>with the latter presenting a prevalence of 75.2% in the adult population.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is now known that <strong>obesity is complex and multifactorial,<\/strong> so starting to reduce its incidence will require efforts on many fronts on <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/ozempic-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many fronts<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is not as simple as people exceeding their energy consumption, <strong>there is a direct link between the type of intestinal microbiota and weight gain,<\/strong>\u201d says Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To study this association, the researchers analyzed the microbiota of Mexican men and women, dividing them into three groups: <strong>not overweight or obese, overweight and obese.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each one underwent an anthropometric analysis to determine <strong>their body composition, which includes the amount of fat and muscle,<\/strong> a biochemical blood analysis and a dietary analysis that consisted of standardized questionnaires to understand their eating patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They then requested a fecal sample and sent it to the laboratory for sequencing. \u201cThere, DNA is extracted to find out<strong> which microorganisms are present in the intestine of each person<\/strong>,\u201d explains Garc\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using bioinformatics analysis, they put together all the data obtained and began to create <strong>microbiota profiles<\/strong> associated with an increase in body mass index (BMI), a parameter commonly used to detect overweight or obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/07\/1-2.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/07\/1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-163805\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/07\/1-2.jpg 750w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2024\/07\/1-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201cThere is no such thing as normal microbiota, as it depends on nationality, diet and other factors,\u201d says Marisela Gonz\u00e1lez of CIATEJ. (Photo: Courtesy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Distinctive Microbiota Profiles of People who are Overweight or Have Obesity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we found is that people with normal weight<strong> have an A pattern of microorganisms<\/strong>, those who are obese have a B pattern, and those who are overweight have a mix,\u201d says Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of their findings include a <strong>high prevalence of three species of fungi<\/strong> that can be pathogens \u2013<em>Candida albicans<\/em>, <em>Candida kefyr<\/em>, and <em>Rhodoturula mucilaginosa<\/em>\u2013 in the intestinal microbiota of people with obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, although their study was carried out on a small group, they can affirm that<strong> there are clear differences between<\/strong> the species of microorganisms that inhabit the intestine of the different body profiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe fact that those who are overweight have a mix between A and B <strong>shows very clearly that weight gain is a continuous process,<\/strong>\u201d says Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that, with microbiota interventions,<strong> a person with obesity could lose weight.<\/strong> In another study they conducted with blood siblings, one of whom had obesity while the other did not, t<strong>hey balanced the intestinal microbiota in the individual with obesity<\/strong> and observed weight loss, without changing eating habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To perform these interventions, you first have to obtain the microbiota profile of the individual to be treated and <strong>use specific antibiotics or antifungals directed at those microorganisms<\/strong> that you want to eliminate or reduce, while using probiotics, prebiotics and nutraceuticals to increase the population of the positive species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can also use a treatment based in probiotics and prebiotics that have antifungal or antibacterial activity,\u201d says Garc\u00eda. (Photo: courtesy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Future of Microbiota Studies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we hear about the intestinal microbiota and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-024-54782-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">close relationship<\/a> with weight gain, it is natural to wonder if <strong>these microorganisms are to blame<\/strong> for some people&#8217;s tendency to obesity, or if it is the other way around, <strong>where gain weight is what modifies the microbiota.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We still don&#8217;t know which comes first, but what we do know is that<strong> these fungi, bacteria and viruses cause people to have very different digestive processes<\/strong>,&#8221; says Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there is no <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/human-microbiome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">normal microbiota<\/a>, since <strong>&#8220;it will depend on nationality, diet and other things,&#8221; <\/strong>it is possible to identify species of microorganisms that could be problematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interventions at the level of the microbiota of our digestive system<\/strong> can not only help with obesity, but also with metabolic issues, such as diabetes, or gastrointestinal diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, there are some laboratories in Mexico that can sequence the DNA of the fecal sample to <strong>learn about a patient&#8217;s intestinal microbiota<\/strong>, however, most of the time it must be commissioned by a doctor or nutritionist who seeks to include it in a treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe intervention can be as simple as eliminating a single bacteria, or resetting the microbiota almost from scratch,\u201d says Gonz\u00e1lez. \u201cUnfortunately, in the country&#8217;s health system it is still not common.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the researchers, the fact that there is a trend to increasingly study the microbiota and its relationship with different diseases, ailments or conditions <strong>is something exciting<\/strong>, because there is still much to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeveral things will be discovered about the<strong> importance of the intestinal microbiota,<\/strong>\u201d says Garc\u00eda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Did you find this story interesting?
