However, sending photographs and information about the Solar System captured by satellites or other devices to Earth can be <\/span>hampered by\u00a0technical difficulties, like the great distances between celestial bodies. One solution could be\u00a0an\u00a0<strong>interplanetary internet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For several decades, <strong>astronomers <\/strong>worldwide have devoted significant efforts to exploring the planets, stars, and other cosmic elements, using <strong>equipment<\/strong> to capture images or data from space missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advancements in technology have allowed these tools to become increasingly more efficient, but the way they transmit <strong>information back to Earth<\/strong> still has many complications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>Interplanetary <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/mexico-first-internet-connection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">internet<\/a><\/strong> is a concept that has existed for a long time and responds to this need, but there are still many things left to do,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_1358?_gl=1*1c9d8b8*_gcl_au*Mzk0Njc0NjkyLjE3MjI5MDE1NTI.*_ga*MTU0NTI0MjAwMi4xNzIyOTAxNTUy*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*MTcyMjkwMTU1Mi4xLjAuMTcyMjkwMTU1Mi42MC4wLjgxMTAxNjA3Mg..\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">C\u00e9sar Vargas<\/a>, research professor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/en\/research\/innovation-in-smart-digital-technologies-and-infrastructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Innovation in Smart Digital Technologies and Infrastructure<\/a> group at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-engineering-and-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Engineering and Sciences<\/a> (EIC) of Tec de Monterrey, in an interview with <strong><em>TecScience<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, Vargas, <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_2660?_gl=1*110pg3i*_gcl_au*Mzk0Njc0NjkyLjE3MjI5MDE1NTI.*_ga*MTU0NTI0MjAwMi4xNzIyOTAxNTUy*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*MTcyMjkwMTU1Mi4xLjEuMTcyMjkwMTc3MC42MC4wLjgxMTAxNjA3Mg..\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rafaela Villalpando,<\/a> and Abraham Urieta of the EIC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2673-4591\/58\/1\/15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a> a proposal to design an <strong>intelligent interplanetary communication network<\/strong> that could help make the transmission of this information more efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How could the Interplanetary Internet be Achieved?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The team&#8217;s proposal for<strong> <\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>an interplanetary internet<\/strong>\u00a0involves placing satellites\u2014called nodes\u2014<\/span>at key points around the most important <strong>planets or celestial bodies<\/strong> within the asteroid belt where <strong>Earth<\/strong> is located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In turn, these <strong>nodes<\/strong> connect with other nodes to create a network that reaches the satellites on <strong>Earth<\/strong>. Each node has different functions and capabilities \u2212such as establishing <strong>connections<\/strong> with other satellites, replicating a signal, or transmitting information\u2212 but they can all detect their own position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe design is similar to the <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/internet-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">internet network<\/a> we have here on Earth, but there is no wiring,\u201d Vargas explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of cables, the <strong>nodes<\/strong> would <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">use\u00a0<strong>wireless optical communication<\/strong>\u00a0technology to send information between satellites and<\/span> <strong>intelligent algorithms<\/strong> to make communication more efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on the planet or space object to be explored and the aspect to be studied, such as the presence of an element, <strong>nanosatellites<\/strong> \u2212satellites that weigh less than 10 kilograms\u2212 loaded with <strong>sensors<\/strong>, spectrometers, magnetometers, radiometers or high-resolution cameras could be sent there to capture the desired information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>connection protocol<\/strong> they propose is so versatile that each explored planet would have its own <strong>network, which could communicate with a global network <\/strong>to bring the information back to Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy distributing the tasks, you can save a lot of energy and time in sending the collected information,\u201d Vargas says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, most <strong>satellites<\/strong> use batteries or solar panels to generate the energy needed to return the collected information, but sometimes they take days to charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Future of Universe Exploration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the researchers, the proposed <strong>network<\/strong> can not only help make the transmission of information between satellites more efficient but could also allow experts who monitor space to communicate and share relevant information more effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPhotographs or chemical analyses collected by robots or nanosatellites could be sent faster and easier,\u201d says Vargas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowadays, with phenomena such as the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic, the need to create <strong>active and efficient communication networks<\/strong> between experts on different topics has become increasingly relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Astronomers could use\u00a0<strong>speeding up information transmission\u00a0<\/strong>to<\/span> monitor phenomena outside Earth, such as whether a black hole is approaching or inside it, such as the formation of sargassum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can predict how far the sargassum will go and when it&#8217;s getting there in order to take efficient measures to reduce its impact,\u201d says the researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, researchers hope that <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>collaboration between astronomical institutions<\/strong>\u00a0will become<strong>\u00a0more frequent<\/strong>\u00a0in the coming years and that proposals like theirs will be implemented<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Were you interested in this story?
