{"id":164042,"date":"2024-08-13T13:10:50","date_gmt":"2024-08-13T19:10:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=164042"},"modified":"2024-12-09T13:23:59","modified_gmt":"2024-12-09T19:23:59","slug":"bacteria-in-microwave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/biotechnology\/bacteria-in-microwave\/","title":{"rendered":"Microwaves: A Haven for Bacterial Diversity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Microwaves, indispensable appliances that heat food in seconds, also <strong>harbor bacteria<\/strong> that can withstand some of the harshest conditions imaginable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/microbiology\/articles\/10.3389\/fmicb.2024.1395751\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Researchers from the University of Valencia in Spain have found that these everyday devices<\/a> are home to a surprising diversity of bacteria in household and laboratory settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Alba-Iglesias-Vilches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alba Iglesias<\/a>, a microbiologist, and her team collected samples from 30 microwave ovens, some from private homes, others shared in large communal spaces \u2014like offices\u2014 and several used in laboratories for heating samples and chemical solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers then cultured these samples in Petri dishes to identify the types of microbes. They also sequenced the DNA extracted from the microwaves to understand the bacterial diversity inside these appliances better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Resilient Organisms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The scientists discovered <strong>\u201cextremophiles\u201d<\/strong> in the microwaves organisms that can survive, and even flourish, in the most extreme environments, such as the <strong>freezing ice of Antarctica<\/strong> and the crushing pressures of the Earth\u2019s crust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite their everyday use to eliminate microorganisms in food, microwaves are a refuge for many bacteria commonly found on human skin, such as <strong>Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While previous studies have identified distinct microbial communities in kitchen appliances like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep17163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dishwashers<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/srep17163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coffee makers<\/a>, this is the first time the microwave oven has been investigated to determine if it hosts its own unique <a href=\"\/en\/health\/human-microbiome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microbiome<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Microwaves in homes and shared areas showed a predominance of food-associated bacteria, suggesting that the bacterial composition varies depending on the environment and usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince the 1980s, we\u2019ve been told that if you use a microwave, it heats everything, kills everything,\u201d says Jason Tetro, an independent microbiologist known as \u201cThe Germ Guy\u201d in Edmonton, Canada, who Nature interviewed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This study is \u201cimportant,\u201d Tetro says because it highlights the potential pathogens in these devices, especially shared ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Need to Clean Our Microwaves\u2026More Often<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the researchers, the findings underscore the importance of regularly cleaning microwaves to reduce potential health risks, particularly in environments where food is handled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, this opens up new avenues for exploring the <a href=\"\/en\/biotechnology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">biotechnological<\/a> applications of bacteria resistant to extreme conditions, which could benefit various industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study sheds new light on a common household appliance and encourages us to think about the microbiota that coexists with us in our everyday
