It was his first time using a <strong>wearable device, and he<\/strong> was surprised at how quickly he reached his first kilometer out of six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was used to running free, without a phone or a watch, and then the trend of sharing your activity on social media took off, which is how I ended up with this band. It was helpful that it notified me every kilometer, along with my pace and time. <strong>I felt like I wasn\u2019t running blindly anymore,<\/strong>\u201d says Betancourt, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jc_betancourt18\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">triathlon athlete and coach<\/a> who has competed in 28 marathons, 10 ultramarathons, and three Ironman triathlons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to experts, <strong>wearable technology has significantly impacted people&#8217;s health behaviors<\/strong>, and its popularity continues to rise. It is projected to experience widespread adoption, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/biodatamining.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13040-024-00368-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">growth rate of 55% over the next five years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>range of wearables<\/strong> includes watches, bracelets, bands, tattoos, and other intelligent garments <strong>equipped with batteries, sensors, microchips, and communication systems<\/strong> to connect to the Internet and link with digital apps that <strong>process, analyze, and organize data<\/strong> for users to review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Ep. 72 - \u00bfPor qu\u00e9 tendr\u00edas que hacer ejercicio? Depending on your activity, it tracks the hours of sleep and recovery you should get,\u201d he notes about <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">his observed\u00a0<strong>self-monitoring habits<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.up.edu.mx\/en\/investigacion\/carolina-del-valle-soto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carolina del Valle<\/a>, a researcher at the Universidad Panamericana, and her colleagues conducted a global study examining <a href=\"https:\/\/biodatamining.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13040-024-00368-y\">the impact of wearables on behavior<\/a>. The study focuses on eight behavioral change techniques: goal setting, personalization, gamification, behavior self-monitoring, induction, social support, self-appraisal, and provision of instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, the research team conducted a <strong>statistical analysis across five continents to identify global trends and patterns in wearable adoption<\/strong>. They then studied <strong>behavioral changes in 30 users <\/strong>who engaged in activities related to these techniques for two weeks, measuring their vital signs three times a day and conducting satisfaction surveys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe analyzed how some apps users find on their devices, <strong>with repeated daily use, can foster behavior changes<\/strong>. We discovered a <strong>fascinating intersection between technology and psychology,<\/strong>\u201d says del Valle, who also holds a PhD in Information and Communication Technologies from Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results highlight that <strong>the most notable benefits for users included Quality of life improvement, Data analytics, and Transparency for the user<\/strong>. Some behavioral change techniques, however, were not perceived by users as directly attributable to the wearables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Wearables encourage <strong>positive behavior changes<\/strong> by delivering immediate feedback, tailored recommendations, and gamified experiences, leading to sustained improvements in health,\u201d the study explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, a significant downside identified was concerns regarding <strong>privacy<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>, security<\/strong>, and<\/span> <strong>Technological dependency<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wearable Data Proves Valuable for Users<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Juan Carlos relies on his wearables during each competition to gain insights that enhance his performance. For example, a chest strap provides precise data on his hydration and energy levels throughout his run. \u201cI believe that \u2018what isn\u2019t measured, can\u2019t be improved,\u2019\u201d he asserts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe strap allows me to know things I couldn\u2019t before, such as <strong>needing 60 grams of carbohydrates and 750 milliliters of water per hour<\/strong> between certain distances, or if I have the lung capacity to go faster,\u201d the athlete explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_532?_gl=1*9r8l5d*_gcl_au*MTYyNjAzNTQyMi4xNzIzNzU3OTgy*_ga*NDMxODA1MDcxLjE3MjM3NTc5ODI.*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*MTcyMzc1Nzk4Mi4xLjEuMTcyMzc1OTIwOC42MC4wLjk3NzU4MzMwMw..\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Juan Arturo Nolazco<\/a>, Director of the <strong>Data Science Hub<\/strong> at <strong>Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey<\/strong> and a contributor to the study, emphasizes <strong>the importance of wearables&#8217; information and how programs and apps deliver this data to users<\/strong> through alerts and feedback, even during periods of physical inactivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study found that <strong>Goal setting<\/strong> was <strong>the most effective behavior change technique for promoting well-being<\/strong>, both in terms of user perception and its impact on vital signs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor instance, if you set goals, <strong>there are apps that can provide personalized notifications or feedback<\/strong> about your progress, saying things like \u2018hey, you\u2019re falling short\u2019 or \u2018you can do it\u2019.<strong> It\u2019s like having someone looking after you<\/strong>; this can become a habit over time, but initially, it serves more as support,\u201d Nolazco comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, wearables boast advanced data processing capabilities with <strong>biometric applications<\/strong>, leading to high demand in the healthcare sector. <a href=\"https:\/\/biodatamining.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13040-024-00368-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Over 80% of global consumers are now willing to use devices for health<\/a> monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Potential of Wearables in Healthcare<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In health, Juan Carlos has observed the growing use of <strong>wearables as a preventative tool<\/strong>. People are becoming more health-conscious, tracking their vital signs to detect irregularities early and receiving alerts that suggest when it might be necessary to consult a physician for further evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Tania-Zertuche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tania Zertuche<\/a>, Director of Comprehensive Wellness and Prevention at <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/tag\/tecsalud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TecSalud<\/a>, highlights how patients can share data from their wearables with their doctors for more precise treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTechnology has evolved to <strong>uncover increasingly useful data for health management<\/strong>. For example, a patient might report that their sleep quality is fine. Still, by examining the wearable data, we might discover that they are experiencing micro-awakenings or very light sleep,\u201d says Zertuche, who also leads the <strong>Health4Life<\/strong> program at <strong>TecSalud<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">She notes that with the volume and type of information provided by wearables,\u00a0<strong>medical teams can access statistics and gain a better understanding of their patients<\/strong>\u2014even during telemedicine sessions\u2014enhancing effectiveness without the need for in-person visits<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zertuche explains that wellness programs within organizations that promote healthier habits can also benefit from wearables. For instance, TecSalud\u2019s <strong>\u201cOne Step at a Time\u201d<\/strong> campaign involves employees, doctors, professors, and residents forming teams of five to participate in <strong>challenges that aim to accumulate the most steps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has yielded excellent results because people start moving more and feel a sense of community. The benefits extend beyond just exercise to enjoy<strong> the activation experience and social interaction<\/strong>,\u201d Zertuche adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Potential Downsides: Anxiety from Data Overload<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the flip side, it\u2019s important to acknowledge that the use of <strong>these devices can sometimes induce anxiety<\/strong>, with some patients opting to avoid certain information altogether. Additionally, there can be a tendency to become obsessed with achieving goals or experience stress when targets seem distant or unattainable. In such cases, it\u2019s advisable to <strong>set different goals or reassess existing ones to make them more achievable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carolina del Valle concludes that <strong>wearable technology undeniably impacts people\u2019s lives<\/strong>. \u201cWe\u2019re constantly surrounded by seven to eight devices connected to the internet throughout the day. We\u2019re creating a \u2018personal area network\u2019. We\u2019re more connected than ever; the <strong>Internet of Everything is real<\/strong>, and <strong>with the Internet of People and the Internet of Things<\/strong>, we are just one more connection in these smart environments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Interested in this story?
