Researchers at Tec de Monterrey are harnessing <a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/10525616\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms and neural networks to monitor glucose levels in individuals with various risk factors<\/a>, aiming to stave off the onset of this disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By integrating <a href=\"\/en\/health\/artificial-intelligence-for-more-efficient-medical-diagnosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AI<\/a> with sensors that track blood sugar levels, <strong>they can predict glucose spikes in advance and prevent the development of diabetes mellitus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Predicting glucose spikes is crucial as these spikes can accumulate over time, progressively increasing the risk of developing diabetes. The research team, comprising biomedical engineering professors and students, is at the forefront of this innovative approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In the Mexican population, there is a <strong>strong predisposition to diabetes<\/strong>, and the public health cost is exorbitant. Being able to <strong>predict glucose spikes<\/strong> and raise awareness about the potential for developing this disease will enable people to take precautionary measures,&#8221; says Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_332595\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mariel Alfaro<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Type 2 diabetes<\/strong> is characterized by <strong>elevated blood glucose levels<\/strong> due to insufficient insulin production. Its development is <strong>linked to obesity, lack of physical activity, and genetic factors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 algunas enfermedades metab\u00f3licas afectan m\u00e1s a los mexicanos?\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5FNbrfblCdQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Artificial Intelligence for Diabetes Prevention<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing from previous experiences with <strong>continuous glucose monitors<\/strong> and a preventive approach, researchers saw the potential to leverage the wealth of information these sensors provide and <strong>apply algorithms to predict the incidence of diabetes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe found articles on using algorithms to predict diabetes incidence; however, many of these studies focus on individuals who are already diagnosed with diabetes. Currently, <strong>the disease appears between ages 30 and 40<\/strong>, but the prevention stage should start a decade earlier,\u201d explains <strong>El\u00edas D\u00edaz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, they conducted a <strong>clinical study with individuals aged 20 to 30 <\/strong>who were not diagnosed with diabetes but had <strong>at least one risk factor for metabolic syndrome<\/strong>. These factors included body mass index, waist circumference, genetic predisposition, visceral fat percentage, sedentary lifestyle, <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/poor-sleep-quality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sleep duration<\/a>, and a diet high in carbohydrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For 15 days, <strong>the group used Abbott sensors and followed a Mediterranean diet<\/strong>, low in carbohydrates and high in dietary fiber, to record glucose levels around the clock, says <strong>Itzel Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong>. They also employed two algorithms to process the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe model takes various input factors, such as adherence to the diet, waist measurements, and other conditions that could influence whether someone develops diabetes. The model itself is <strong>composed of multiple algorithms that work together to provide a prognosis of what might happen<\/strong>,\u201d says <strong>Mariel Alfaro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first tool used in the study was based on a statistical model known as \u201cchi-square,\u201d which helped identify the most significant risk factors for diabetes propensity. Based on these factors, a <strong>neural network classifier<\/strong> was trained to predict the development of the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, to forecast glucose spikes, <strong>Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) <\/strong>recurrent neural networks were utilized. However, it successfully<strong> forecasts glucose levels at two, five, and seven days<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to alert users when glucose spikes occur and to provide actionable insights to prevent these spikes from persisting, ultimately reducing their frequency over time,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matehuala points out that, in the short term, there will likely be a surge in the use of continuous glucose monitors. He envisions AI models leading to <strong>the creation of apps, interfaces, and alert systems<\/strong> that notify users when their glucose levels rise, prompting them to take measures to regulate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe algorithm doesn\u2019t predict that you\u2019ll become diabetic in five years, but by forecasting these glucose spikes, the intention is to show that <strong>if you continue with your current lifestyle and don&#8217;t adhere to a diet, you could develop the disease<\/strong>,\u201d Matehuala explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Did you find this story interesting?
