{"id":165684,"date":"2024-11-06T13:35:09","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T19:35:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=165684"},"modified":"2025-06-13T14:37:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T20:37:11","slug":"digital-media-observatory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/digital-media-observatory\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Ways This Observatory is Tackling Disinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_The_Global_Risks_Report_2024.pdf\">World Economic <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_The_Global_Risks_Report_2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Forum&#8217;s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_The_Global_Risks_Report_2024.pdf\"> Global Risks Report 2024<\/a>, disinformation will be the second most significant threat<\/strong><\/span> that humanity will face in the coming years,\u00a0surpassing issues like social polarization, the cost-of-living crisis, and cyberattacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_143581\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Alejandro Mart\u00edn del Campo<\/strong><\/a>, researcher at the&nbsp;<a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-humanities-and-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">School of Humanities and Education<\/a>&nbsp;at Tec de Monterrey and director of the institution&#8217;s Digital Humanities initiative, argues that this pervasive issue impacts various sectors, including health, economy, and educa<\/span>tion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">To tackle this challenge, experts from multiple disciplines are collaborating on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/tec.mx\/observatorio-medios-digitales\/inicio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Digital Media Observatory<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. This initiative, spearheaded by the Vice-rector Office of Research, <strong>aims to identify and monitor dominant narratives in Mexico&#8217;s digital media landscape<\/strong> and highlight disinformation mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMost people now get their news from digital sources,\u201d the professor explains. Users seek information about their communities through various platforms, where they often encounter disinformation that spreads virally as individuals share content without verifying whether an event occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Fear Spreads<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the campaigns for Mexico&#8217;s presidential elections in 2024, <strong>researchers at the Digital Media Observatory analyzed <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/social-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">platforms<\/a> such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter)<\/strong>, gathering over half a million messages related to any of the three presidential candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Using this data,&nbsp;<strong>a group of students evaluated the most discussed topics during the debates<\/strong>&nbsp;while&nbsp;<strong>another professor investigated how <\/strong><\/span>\u201cfear\u201d was spread, analyzing messages that utilize this concept. These projects capitalize on the insights generated by the observatory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>Disinformation is an industry that targets various population segments<\/strong>, generating money and resources; it\u2019s a problem that has been studied for years,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He adds that the current challenge lies in the speed at which this content spreads, noting that countering it requires twice the effort needed to create it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this regard, <strong>the observatory will combat disinformation and contribute to media literacy<\/strong> through four key actions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Open Data Generation<\/strong><br>This initiative involves <strong>monitoring digital media<\/strong>, primarily social networks, <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">blogs, and news portals, to create&nbsp;<a href=\"\/en\/tag\/data-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">databases and valuable information<\/a>&nbsp;for researchers, journalists, and society<\/span>. <br>For instance, the databases compiled during the federal campaigns include graphs and metrics to evaluate content, which are <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/tec.mx\/observatorio-medios-digitales\/elecciones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">available on the observatory\u2019s website<\/a> for those interested in conducting in-depth research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Media Literacy<\/strong><br>The observatory develops and offers tools and resources to help individuals identify fake news, verify information, and understand how disinformation mechanisms operate. <br>\u201cThis competency should be integrated across all fields of study. It\u2019s not just the responsibility of journalists or communication professionals; everyone is exposed to disinformation and must learn how to combat it, navigate around it, or\u2014at worst\u2014consume it. Our goal is to create workshops and resources for our students and society,\u201d he emphasizes. <br>Among the resources available are <strong>a compilation of guides and free courses, downloadable books, and artificial intelligence tools<\/strong>\u2014such as WhatsApp bots\u2014to verify potential false content that may arrive via mobile devices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fact-Checking<br>During the presidential elections, the observatory launched a project called Verifactz to distinguish reliable content from misleading information on social media. <br>This initiative consists of a network of information verifiers <strong>of Tec students, supported by journalists and researchers<\/strong>. Through a verification matrix, students are trained to assess elements that determine whether a piece of content is true, false, dubious, or unverifiable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Research<\/strong><br>Experts at the observatory also conduct analyses and publish data on various topics, <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">as well as&nbsp;<strong>map and visualize information,<\/strong><\/span><strong> to contribute to scientific production and knowledge dissemination<\/strong>. <br>For instance, they have produced content related to the role of media and digital audiences in the U.S. presidential elections, trends and viral phenomena like the #tradwives concept, and conspiracy theories on social media and their risks to governments.<br>These research findings are <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/tec.mx\/observatorio-medios-digitales\/noticias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>published as articles and reports on the observatory&#8217;s platform<\/strong><\/a> under the news section, and they are also shared through weekly newsletters available via free subscription.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An Observatory for a Balanced Information Diet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mart\u00edn del Campo links the concept of an information diet to <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">nutrition, where the&nbsp;<strong>Digital Media Observatory<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>acts as a nutritionist&nbsp;<\/strong>on how to achieve a balance between<\/span> the sources of information they consume and the \u201cnutritional\u201d elements of online content\u2014ultimately leading to a \u201cplate of good information.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To fulfill this objective and align with the paradigms of today\u2019s digital society, <strong>the observatory is a collaborative project involving journalists, professors, researchers, lawyers, and engineers<\/strong>. These participants employ journalistic methodologies and<strong> leverage technical and legal expertise to combat disinformation effectively<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In selecting which platforms to analyze, <strong>the team relies on data such as that provided by the Digital News Report from the Reuters Institute and the University of Oxford<\/strong>. This information highlights the most consumed platforms by age group and gender and their use for entertainment versus informational purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe select platforms based on this data, particularly those from Meta, such as Instagram and Facebook, which remain the most widely used in Mexico and globally. However, demographic profiles and age groups aren&#8217;t active on these platforms, making it essential to study others like YouTube or TikTok, where we find different types of content and other population groups,\u201d says Mart\u00edn del Campo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, given the vast amounts of information, <strong>the observatory team leverages artificial intelligence algorithms to track when an event is going viral <\/strong>or to analyze the sentiment\u2014whether cheerful, negative, sad, or frustrated\u2014expressed in a volume of messages about a particular topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By adapting these algorithms from <strong>Python libraries and machine learning frameworks<\/strong>, they can obtain real-time information and assess the likelihood that a user is a human or a bot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>The<\/strong><\/span><strong> Digital Media Observatory is working to expand its impact, collaborating with Tec\u2019s research institutes <\/strong>and forming alliances with other international institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For instance, during the U.S. presidential elections, the team collaborated with universities and other organizations to manage the vast amount of information generated\u2014nearly four times the volume compared to the electoral process in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early January 2025, <strong>the observatory plans to undergo a \u201crelaunch\u201d to enhance its visibility among national and international media<\/strong>. Additionally, it is organizing a workshop featuring Solange Rezende, a professor at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, and a researcher in artificial intelligence focusing on decision-making applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Were you interested in this story?
