{"id":165836,"date":"2024-11-13T10:48:50","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T16:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=165836"},"modified":"2025-10-31T12:57:58","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T18:57:58","slug":"natura-lab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/natura-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"NATURA-Lab: An Initiative to Connect Water and Science"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/water-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Water Center<\/a> at Tec de Monterrey has launched the NATURA-Lab initiative<\/strong>, aimed at fostering <strong>research projects and interdisciplinary collaboration <\/strong>on issues related to water and nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is an initiative we are building, where we aim to bring together everyone with shared interests in these two areas. There are people both inside and outside the Tec who are working on these topics, but their efforts tend to be isolated or scattered, which is why <strong>we need to create more synergy<\/strong>,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_95847\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aldo Ram\u00edrez<\/a>, director of the center, in an interview with <em><strong>TecScience<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One example of this initiative in action is the collaboration of Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey with local authorities, working with the <strong>Metropolitan Environmental Fund of Monterrey<\/strong> on the development of the <strong>Nuevo Le\u00f3n Water Plan 2050<\/strong>. (Photo: Ricardo Trevi\u00f1o\/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Connection, Innovation, and Research on Water and Nature<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ericka Toledo<\/strong>, the initiative&#8217;s leader, explains that <strong>NATURA-Lab has two key components<\/strong>: it applies a laboratory and innovation methodology designed to <strong>integrate social processes into the natural dynamics it seeks to address<\/strong>. Additionally, <strong>the initiative leverages the Water Center&#8217;s labs with potential environmental applications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the goals is to <strong>make researchers aware that this type of environmental research is possible<\/strong>. One of the final agreements from <strong>COP 16<\/strong> was to work on the symbiosis between biodiversity and climate change; the international call is to refocus on nature, and <strong>the link between climate and nature is water<\/strong>,\u201d says Toledo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She shares that among the projects currently being developed under this initiative is <strong>a collaboration with the German Cooperation Agency GIZ <\/strong>on water forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The center\u2019s director adds that <strong>NATURA-Lab&#8217;s core objectives include fostering collaboration and promoting interdisciplinarity<\/strong>, as water-related issues are complex and require multiple approaches to tackle effectively. The aim is to build a community where people can collaborate more easily, turning what are now isolated efforts into actions that can have a more significant impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, <strong>the initiative brings together faculty researchers from all departments at Tec de Monterrey who are <\/strong>interested in water and nature-related topics. The next phase aims to build a broader collaboration network with external entities, such as governments, other universities, and research centers, to amplify its impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of this initiative, calls for proposals will be launched to <strong>encourage research and innovation in water and nature<\/strong>. One example is a project funded by the FEMSA Foundation, the Inter-American Development Bank, and Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to become allies of nature to face the challenges brought by <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate change<\/a>. (Photo: Ricardo Trevi\u00f1o \/ TecScience)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Water Center Celebrates 16th Anniversary with Interdisciplinary Seminar<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement of the NATURA-Lab initiative was part of the event celebrating the <strong>16th anniversary of the Water Center<\/strong>, which brought together academics, researchers, and administrators from Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey, as well as organizations and other partners who presented projects related to the environment and water as a natural resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An interdisciplinary seminar was held, where <strong>experts reflected on the importance of water and nature as pillars of sustainability and environmental ethics<\/strong>.
