{"id":165916,"date":"2025-01-03T11:40:19","date_gmt":"2025-01-03T17:40:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=165916"},"modified":"2025-02-20T15:44:24","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T21:44:24","slug":"education-for-vulnerable-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/education-for-vulnerable-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Bring Education to the Most Vulnerable Communities in Mexico"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Given the social inequalities that exist in the world, creating programs aimed at bringing formal education to the most vulnerable populations \u2013those who live in poverty, have a disability, or are migrants\u2013 is a way <strong>to promote a dignified future for all Mexicans.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Mexico,<strong> 6.4 million children and young people between the ages of three and 18 do not attend school<\/strong>, representing 18% of the population that, due to their age, should attend school on a mandatory basis, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/imco.org.mx\/desigualdades-educativa-en-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mexican Institute of Competitiveness<\/a> (IMCO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The populations that face the greatest obstacles to accessing education are those who speak an <strong>indigenous language, live with a disability<\/strong>, live in rural communities, or are Afro-descendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, creating programs directed at <strong>guaranteeing the right to education<\/strong> for vulnerable groups is essential. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI firmly believe that education is the only tool that can save us, as Mexico and as humanity,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/sitios.itesm.mx\/ehe\/facultad\/yheredia.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yolanda Heredia<\/a>, research professor at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-humanities-and-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Humanities and Education<\/a> (EHE) at Tec de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more than two decades, the researcher has dedicated part of her time to <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar?hl=es&amp;as_sdt=0%2C5&amp;q=yolanda+heredia+escorza&amp;oq=yo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">finding ways to innovate in education<\/a> and to bring it to different <strong>vulnerable populations in Mexico<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, in collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/doctoradoestudioshumanisticosccm.tec.mx\/es\/semblanza\/francisco-diaz-estrada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Francisco D\u00edaz<\/a>, Associate Dean of Research (EHE), Heredia and other researchers from this school have created <strong>Inclusive Education in Vulnerable Environments<\/strong>, a collection of projects, initiatives and research focused on ensuring that those who experience inequality also have access to <strong>quality education<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bringing Education to Vulnerable Communities in Chiapas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea is that, in the future, the group will develop research projects that, together with institutions such as the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/center-for-early-childhood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center for Early Childhood<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.segob.gob.mx\/work\/models\/SEGOB\/Resource\/1093\/5\/images\/Que-es-un-CENDI.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Child Development Centers<\/a> (CENDI), will manage to expand education to <strong>areas where its access is more difficult<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have worked a lot with indigenous populations in Chiapas,\u201d says Heredia. In <a href=\"https:\/\/d1wqtxts1xzle7.cloudfront.net\/71045586\/8b096386698f9d5884f71aa9383ccf9d4820-libre.pdf?1633220468=&amp;response-content-disposition=inline%3B+filename%3DTechnology_based_Participatory_Learning.pdf&amp;Expires=1732238524&amp;Signature=OUUB04m6NVi2tWr3c-GDMMh41Y5XRZV2Ub3tlZ73pEHyKlLW4AIaJMTez5HgUdJ4vFWwiRJtqHi~jsi07vDizZh2sfEJMke6G56d8jtbyETLHFOlB3UNhIArvS-SBFNn73cajbmaNPnw63HvRG7ILr7iQKuP8lbBFbt~efT6CF4K2NlD7VD5xRsIYtilY5g63~8~Ch76Ub6kT8hQXzkC61jqmuvq-eeegwD1hhfEYTDASkAYfM882XBBNqdE1ebGP7TxEK1bKu~Xp-BndRjvDK8BbyleVpzuKmMVBHdAym2hjd2w~3epeTdsOp8vpXwHN5l6rFiJnr-OT-jwPTuLLw__&amp;Key-Pair-Id=APKAJLOHF5GGSLRBV4ZA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of these projects<\/a>, researchers took digital tablets to indigenous Tzotzil-speaking schools on the outskirts of San Crist\u00f3bal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The objective of the study was to <strong>describe the educational impact of using digital tablets<\/strong> and the SUGAR digital educational platform in second and third grade classrooms. The tablets were given to both the school teachers and the students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, they found that combining digital technology with the SUGAR platform is an effective learning environment that helps develop <strong>technological and cognitive skills <\/strong>in students and teachers. It also improved students&#8217; <strong>self-confidence<\/strong> and increased their language skills in Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another study yet to be published, they used <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.wumbox.leo_leo&amp;hl=es_MX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leo Leo<\/a>, an educational application based on artificial intelligence (AI), to help <strong>alphabetize children between 4 and 7 years of age.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The application was used with <strong>2,300 children in third grade of preschool<\/strong> and first grade of primary school in different cities and towns in Chiapas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There, they divided the students into three experimental groups: one that worked with the application using tablets in the classroom and at home, a second group that worked with the application only at home and a third one that did not use the application. What they found is that <strong>the first two groups showed greater ease in learning to speak and write.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inclusive Education in Vulnerable Environments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are just two examples of the type of research that can be promoted with Inclusive Education in Vulnerable Environments, so that <strong>formal education can reach<\/strong> children and young people in places in Mexico where its access is null or limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe realized that in San Crist\u00f3bal there are still many children who <strong>do not go to school <\/strong>because they work selling things on the street and continue to be in very difficult conditions,\u201d says the researcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faced with data regarding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scielo.org.mx\/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S1870-53082017000100075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inequality in education<\/a> in Mexico, it is natural to assume that in other cities with high poverty rates in the country, formal education is not as present as we would like it to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, initiatives like this one renew hope that there <strong>are ways to reduce these gaps<\/strong> and improve the quality of life of Mexicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wish we had the possibility to change the education in our country, but at least we can prove that we <strong>can influence important aspects of it,<\/strong>\u201d says Heredia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Were you interested in this story?
