According to the first study of its kind conducted in the country<\/a>, nine out of ten Mexican adults experienced at least one adverse event during their first eight years of life (ACEs, for Adverse Childhood Experiences)<\/span>. The research was carried out by the Early Childhood Center<\/a> at Tec de Monterrey and the FEMSA Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study gathered data from 1,448 adults and 200 children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ACEs are stressful or traumatic events<\/a> that, without the proper support, can affect a child\u2019s development\u2014not only in their early years but throughout their entire life. Today, at least 10 categories of adverse experiences during early childhood (from birth to age eight) are recognized:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Physical abuse<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Sexual abuse<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Emotional abuse<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Physical neglect: when children are not provided with healthy food at appropriate times or their hygiene is neglected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Emotional neglect: when caregivers fail to help children manage different levels of stress.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. Living with someone who has a mental illness or suicidal thoughts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Having a family member with a drug or alcohol addiction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Witnessing domestic violence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Death of a parent or parental abandonment due to divorce.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. The imprisonment of a family member.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
