These projects are <strong>turning the university campuses into <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/living-research-labs-urban-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">living laboratories<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These initiatives are featured in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/sites\/default\/files\/repositorio\/sentido-humano\/sostenibilidad\/ruta-azul\/reportes\/ReporteRutaAzul2023-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ruta Azul Annual Report 2023-2024<\/a><\/strong>, presented as part of the institution&#8217;s <strong>Sustainability and Climate Change Plan for 2025<\/strong>. <span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The university launched <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/ruta-azul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ruta Azul<\/a> three years ago&nbsp;<\/span>to achieve its <strong>goals toward a sustainable future <\/strong>and foster a proactive culture in response to the <strong><a href=\"\/es\/humano-social\/cop-29-tec-de-monterrey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate emergency<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">During the presentation, <strong>David Garza<\/strong>, the institution&#8217;s Executive President, commented: \u201cIn recent years, we have set specific goals and made them part of our plan. As a university, we are dedicated to education, research, and impacting society, and these are all elements <\/span>central to Ruta Azul.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5 Applied Research and Innovation Projects<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The call for proposals focused on finding <strong>solutions to three main challenges: water<\/strong>\u2014specifically over-consumption and the circular management of this resource; <strong>waste<\/strong>\u2014developing circular economy strategies for handling waste; and <strong>sustainable mobility<\/strong>\u2014aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The five selected projects are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1.Nature-Based Solutions for Transition to a Water Sensitive Campus<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This project, developed by the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-architecture-art-and-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Architecture, Art, and Design (EAAD)<\/a> at the Quer\u00e9taro campus, created a strategic plan for a water-sensitive campus. It incorporates <strong>nature-based solutions and renewable energy<\/strong> in open areas to enhance the <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/seawater-desalination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">circularity<\/a> of the water resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:67px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.Walkability in Distrito Tlalpan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-social-sciences-and-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Social Sciences and Government (ECSG)<\/a> implemented this project at the Ciudad de M\u00e9xico campus, focused on formulating public policies that include <a href=\"\/en\/business-innovation\/what-are-innovation-districts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">urban design<\/a> interventions, land use planning, and transportation strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:67px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.Implementation of Rainwater Harvesting and Greywater Reuse System for Water Consumption Reduction and Wastewater Minimization<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative from the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-engineering-and-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Engineering and Sciences (EIC)<\/a> at the Monterrey campus involves a rainwater harvesting and <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/water-scarcity-in-mexico\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">greywater reuse system<\/a>. The project aims to evaluate the pilot system&#8217;s performance and demonstrate its effectiveness for <strong>potential full or partial adoption in managing this resource<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:67px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.Mapping Organic Waste Streams for Developing Sustainable Food and Waste Management Systems on Campus: A Living Lab Perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This project, led by the EIC on the Guadalajara campus, focuses on improving food systems by mapping and characterizing <strong><a href=\"\/en\/business-innovation\/circular-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">organic waste<\/a> flows<\/strong>. It also assesses the efficiency of waste separation in order to identify sustainable food options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:67px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5.Conscious Smart Water<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers from the EIC at the Monterrey campus developed a digital platform that <strong>monitors water consumption in restrooms and drinking fountains<\/strong>, energy efficiency, and the operational quality of the treatment plant. The project aims to raise awareness and promote water conservation within the campus community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, faculty from the EIC at Monterrey carried out a project in which students worked with secondary and high school students to promote <strong>PET recycling<\/strong>. The collected material was then used to produce 3D-printed educational materials for the participating institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:67px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paola Visconti<\/strong>, Director of Sustainable Development and Outreach, and leader of Ruta Azul, stated that<strong> the initiative aims to promote interdisciplinary research applied to solutions on campus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Were you interested in this story?
