The Decision That Will Shape the Next Decade in Healthcare"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Over the next decade, there will be only two types of doctors in Mexico: those who <strong>embrace advanced technologies to treat patients<\/strong>, and those who don\u2019t, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/yagomarch1907\/\">Santiago Marc<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/yagomarch1907\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">h<\/a>, coordinator of New Technologies at the Mexican Health Foundation (FUNSALUD), speaking at the <a href=\"https:\/\/content.tecsalud.mx\/fils\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10th International Health Leadership Forum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>March, an expert in precision medicine and a member of the Consortium of Innovative Vaccine Scientists representing Mexico in <a href=\"https:\/\/cepi.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)<\/a>, emphasized the growing importance of technological integration in healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPrecision medicine has two key components: <strong>it relies on new technologies and life sciences<\/strong>\u2014such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, microbiomics, and epigenomics,\u201d March explained during his presentation at the forum, where he introduced the <strong>National Platform for the Development of Precision Medicine in Mexico<\/strong>. This initiative aims to make a significant impact on public health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project also aligns with the World Health Organization&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/one-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One Health<\/a> initiative, which promotes an integrated approach to the health of people, animals, and ecosystems, while also <strong>considering the sociocultural and environmental factors that influence disease dynamics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Platform for Advancing Precision Medicine in Mexico<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Precision medicine has the potential to make an impact at every stage of disease\u2014whether it\u2019s in <strong>susceptibility, prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, complications, or outcomes<\/strong>. It also focuses on early detection and prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>March highlighted several key<strong> applications of precision medicine<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tests for susceptibility to diseases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early screening and detection of cancers (lung, <a href=\"\/en\/science-communication\/bone-health-and-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breast<\/a>, and colon)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"\/es\/salud\/envejecimiento-celular\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Biomarker<\/a> diagnostics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Digital pathology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pharmacogenomics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prognostic biomarkers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cell therapies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The coordinator further pointed out that there are already <strong>individual efforts and infrastructure in place, utilizing advanced technologies<\/strong>, that can be integrated into the broader goals of the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, he mentioned that in Torre\u00f3n, Coahuila, there is a test designed to detect how children with <a href=\"\/en\/health\/jose-alejandro-madrigal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)<\/a> respond to treatments\u2014a test that very few medical leaders across the country are aware of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are isolated advances in precision medicine in Mexico that we need to bring together. We have <strong>the largest sequencer in Mexico City, and another major one at Tec de Monterrey.<\/strong> Part of this effort is to create synergy,\u201d March explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of developing the model for this platform, <strong>health policies<\/strong> will be considered, alongside a regulatory legal framework; the <strong>identification of existing infrastructure<\/strong>; and the definition of equipment needs, as well as <strong>training programs for healthcare professionals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative also aims to contribute to the integration of <strong>interventions into clinical practice guidelines<\/strong> and to promote <strong>clinical research in biopharmaceutical innovation <\/strong>for precision medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this platform, FUNSALUD aims to design <strong>a roadmap for the successful implementation of precision medicine in the country<\/strong>. The project began in May 2024, and so far, it has conducted documentary research and is carrying out an infrastructure study across Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the team will conduct<strong> interviews with experts and visit the world\u2019s leading centers for personalized medicine<\/strong>. Ultimately, the plan includes building a <strong>National Center for Precision Medicine<\/strong>, a facility equipped with bioinformatics capabilities, servers, tools, training programs, and research opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>March explained that this model stems from a <strong>collaboration between the public and private sectors<\/strong>, which will benefit hospitals, universities, and research centers alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn just a few years, we\u2019ll have doctors who use <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artificial Intelligence<\/a>, precision medicine tools, and new technologies, and those who continue to rely on traditional methods. <strong>It will be the patient who decides which approach they prefer and with whom they want to stay<\/strong>,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Path to Digital Health<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with <em><strong>TecScience<\/strong><\/em>, March discussed the need to strengthen connectivity in Mexico, particularly in two key areas: education and healthcare. &#8220;We are aware that there are three fundamental elements that form the pillars of digital health: <strong>the electronic health record, telemedicine, and the electronic prescription<\/strong>,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If Mexico successfully consolidates these three pillars, by establishing proper regulation and appropriate use, <strong>digital health <\/strong>can become a reality, explained the FUNSALUD coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also highlighted other platforms being promoted by the foundation, such as the <strong><em>M\u00e9dic@ Digital en Mexico<\/em><\/strong> initiative. This project involves a self-administered survey sent via email to <strong>assess the adoption and digital habits of healthcare professionals<\/strong> across 20 medical specialties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From this project emerged the<strong><em> Paciente Digital Mexicano <\/em><\/strong>initiative, which is the counterpart to this study and aims to understand healthcare users\u2014how they seek information and how they interact with doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding education, March emphasized the need for universities to focus on <strong>developing curricula that evolve at the same pace as technological advancements<\/strong>. He also stressed the importance of <strong>updating educators <\/strong>in life sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve observed that these disciplines are advancing rapidly, while academic programs are lagging behind. We need healthcare professionals who, from the undergraduate level, have certain digital skills. This way, we\u2019ll have better doctors in the future who can fully leverage everything available for the benefit of their patients,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10th International Health Leadership Forum<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/school-of-medicine-and-health-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Medicine and Health Sciences<\/a> hosted the 10th edition of the<strong> International Health Leadership Forum<\/strong>, where experts from the fields of education, technology, and healthcare discussed current challenges and the future outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the theme <em><strong>Leading in an Era of Global Challenges<\/strong><\/em>, the forum explored topics centered around four main pillars: transformational leadership; patient-centered education; artificial intelligence and digital health; and added value in healthcare delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the session on artificial intelligence, <strong>Carles Abarca<\/strong>, Vice President of Digital Transformation at Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey, discussed the potential of this technology for both society and the healthcare sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some <strong>key applications of artificial intelligence in healthcare <\/strong>include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diagnostics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personalized treatments<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drug discovery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optimization of hospital management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decision-making processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor example, if an AI agent were monitoring us continuously, there are many conditions we could reduce,\u201d Abarca noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The forum also featured international speakers, including <a href=\"\/en\/health\/universities-can-tackle-public-health-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elena Fuentes-Afflick<\/a>, Chief Scientific Officer at the Association of American Medical Colleges; <a href=\"\/en\/tech\/education-can-not-ignore-artificial-intelligence-michael-fung\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Fung<\/a>, Executive Director of the Institute for the Future of Education; <strong>Salvador Alva<\/strong>, business leader and former president of Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event took place at the Zambrano Hellion Hospital in San Pedro Garza Garc\u00eda, Nuevo Le\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>\u00bfTe interes\u00f3 esta historia? \u00bfQuieres publicarla?
