I know I wasn\u2019t in the majority,&#8221; she explains. In surveys taken after the exam about their experience, other students shared frustrating experiences, underscoring how <strong>subjective assessments can feel depending on a student\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/connected-learning\/\">emotional state<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address the lack of tools providing real-time, objective feedback on learning, researchers at Tec de Monterrey are exploring how <strong>monitoring brain activity could revolutionize classroom teaching.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Valdivia, now pursuing a PhD in physiology, biophysics, and systems biology at <a href=\"https:\/\/weill.cornell.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Weill Cornell Medicine<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Milton-Candela-Leal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milton Candela Leal<\/a>, a biomedical engineering student, presented three studies on learning tools in Amsterdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developed at Tec\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nsfbrain.org\/sites\/tecnologico-de-monterrey\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BRAIN Center<\/a>, these projects harness biometric signals to optimize educational environments. The first, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/9733770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Advanced Learner Assistance System<\/a>, <strong>detects mental fatigue in real time<\/strong>. The second assesses interest in STEM topics among students aged 6 to 15. The third identifies students&#8217; <a href=\"\/en\/human-social\/gamification-and-laughter-improve-student-performance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">emotions while learning<\/a> to create personalized educational settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll three projects share the same foundation: how we can use biometrics and real-time technologies to support education,\u201d explains Candela, a researcher on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"El costo de un cerebro infeliz\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2BVpkSy0B70?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Subtitles are available in English.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Adapting Educational Environments with Light and Sound<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team has created the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/human-neuroscience\/articles\/10.3389\/fnhum.2024.1319574\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neurohumanities Lab<\/a>, an immersive space where <strong>the environment adapts to students\u2019 brain signals<\/strong>. \u201cThe goal is to identify strategies teachers can implement to improve performance,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_333457\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mauricio Ram\u00edrez Moreno<\/a>, project coordinator and mechatronics professor. \u201cWe want to make classes more dynamic and engaging for students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on brain signals, the system<strong> can adjust classroom elements like lighting and sound.<\/strong> Researchers have found that gamma waves are particularly effective in detecting emotional states such as admiration, joy, and sadness. Using electroencephalography (EEG) through specialized headphones, they\u2019ve achieved<strong> 94% accuracy in identifying mental states.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Valdivia, the implications extend beyond education. \u201cThis is a critical issue in health sciences, especially given today\u2019s challenges with stress, mental health, and the<strong> pressure students face,\u201d <\/strong>she notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the classrooms of the future, each student could wear a <strong>discreet device<\/strong>\u2014such as headphones, glasses, or a headband with electrodes\u2014that monitors different brain regions. \u201cTo make this as natural as possible, we\u2019re developing less intrusive devices that resemble everyday objects,\u201d Ram\u00edrez explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Detecting Mental Fatigue, Stress, and Anxiety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system will require a computing hub to gather and process data from these devices. \u201cBiometrics provide real-time feedback to teachers,\u201d says Candela. \u201cIn future classrooms, while conducting an activity, a teacher could monitor a control panel that shows how students\u2019 emotions evolve\u2014whether <strong>they\u2019re bored, fatigued, or less engaged.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This technology offers significant advances in education: <strong>continuous monitoring to detect mental fatigue during assessments,<\/strong> early detection of stress and anxiety, and real-time adaptation of teaching methods based on student responses. It also provides objective data to evaluate the effectiveness of different educational strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>These are unbiased, objective metrics<\/strong> that are more reliable over multiple sessions,\u201d Candela emphasizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The BRAIN Center team is refining the system in collaboration with the Living Lab. Although widespread implementation of these future classrooms remains uncertain, the potential impact of their discoveries is promising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis will benefit the entire education system,\u201d Valdivia concludes, \u201cfrom students and teachers to administrators and investors looking<strong> to optimize resource allocation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Did you find this story interesting?
