{"id":166879,"date":"2025-01-09T13:17:01","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T19:17:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=166879"},"modified":"2025-01-09T13:17:16","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T19:17:16","slug":"los-angeles-fires-cost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/human-social\/los-angeles-fires-cost\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate-Fueled Wildfires Could Cost Los Angeles $50 Billion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"\/en\/tag\/climate-change\/\">Climate-related catastrophes<\/a> accounted for nearly all the $320 billion in global damages recorded last year, while geophysical events \u2014such as earthquakes\u2014 comprised only 7% of the total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deadly inferno tearing through Los Angeles and consuming some of the city\u2019s wealthiest neighborhoods could go down as one of the costliest natural disasters ever recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AccuWeather\u2019s<\/a> initial estimates forecast losses ranging from $52 billion to $57 billion.<\/strong> This would place the event among the top 10 property loss disasters, a list dominated by hurricanes like Helene, which caused $250 billion in damages this past summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"El calentamiento global, uno de los grandes problemas de la humanidad\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ToqyruoS4oQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Blame It on the Climate<br><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is already one of the worst wildfires in California\u2019s history,\u201d said <strong>Jonathan Porter<\/strong>, AccuWeather\u2019s Chief Meteorologist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Porter warned that if significantly more structures are destroyed in the coming days, this could become the state&#8217;s most devastating wildfire on record, both in terms of burned properties and economic losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a horrific disaster. We\u2019re only beginning to grasp the magnitude of the destruction and loss,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s pure and utter devastation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A significant factor behind AccuWeather\u2019s high loss projections is the value of the properties being destroyed. Zillow estimates that the average home price in the heavily impacted Pacific Palisades area is approximately $3.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lives and Property Lost<br><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the staggering economic toll, the fires have claimed at least five lives, according to California Governor Gavin Newsom, with more fatalities expected to be reported in the coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The governor, who visited Los Angeles to assess the damage, described the scene as \u201cabsolute and total devastation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe destructive forces of climate change are becoming increasingly evident,\u201d said Thomas Blunck of Munich Re, a multinational corporation whose profitability hinges on accurately modeling property risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Munich Re\u2019s annual report highlighted a nearly 20% spike in property damages from natural disasters worldwide in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Severe thunderstorms and wildfires drove the trend more than major events like tropical cyclones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geophysical phenomena such as earthquakes accounted for only 7% of this year\u2019s $320 billion in losses. In 2023, when natural disaster damages totaled $268 billion (adjusted for inflation), these non-climate-related events still comprised about one-fourth of the total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSocieties must brace themselves for even more severe climate-driven catastrophes,\u201d Blunck warned. <em>(Fortune \/ Reuters)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Were you interested in this story?
