{"id":166882,"date":"2025-01-10T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-10T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=166882"},"modified":"2025-02-20T15:30:54","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T21:30:54","slug":"polluted-rivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/business-innovation\/polluted-rivers\/","title":{"rendered":"An Innovation to Clean Mexican Rivers (That Aims to be as Accessible as a Smartphone)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Over half of Mexico\u2019s surface water \u2014rivers, lakes, streams, and lagoons\u2014 is polluted, and reversing this environmental crisis is no small feat. Economic, political, and social factors complicate restoring these crucial ecosystems. However, researchers are turning to innovative solutions rooted in the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/circular-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">circular economy<\/a>, a strategy that seeks to rejuvenate these waters and transform industrial waste into valuable resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 2012 and 2018, 58.8% of the 4,202 surface water monitoring sites assessed by <a href=\"https:\/\/sinav30.conagua.gob.mx:8080\/Descargas\/pdf\/EAM2023_f.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mexico\u2019s National Water Commission through its National Water Quality Measurement Network<\/a> (Renameca, in Spanish) showed varying degrees of contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pollution plagues many of the country\u2019s rivers, as industrial and household waste is routinely dumped into them. Some of the most affected are the Lerma Santiago, Atoyac, and Tula rivers. Yet, determining exactly how many others contain harmful compounds remains a challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOf all the rivers in the country, I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a single one that\u2019s completely free of contamination,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_169111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isaac Chairez<\/a>, a research professor at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-of-advanced-materials-for-sustainable-manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute of Advanced Materials for Sustainable Manufacturing (IAMSM)<\/a> at Tec de Monterrey\u2019s Guadalajara campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/2-2-1024x1024.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/2-2-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-166883\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/2-2-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/2-2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/2-2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/2-2-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/2-2.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Chairez is part of a team of researchers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_332595?_gl=1*18uwmoz*_gcl_au*OTkyNTIxMTM2LjE3MzY0NjYwMjU.*_ga*NTc0NTgwODY2LjE3MzY0NjYwMjc.*_ga_D9LSDN87GD*MTczNjQ2NjAyNi4xLjEuMTczNjQ2NzUwMy41Ny4wLjE5NDc5MzM0Ng..\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mariel Alfaro<\/a>, also from IAMSM, and <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.es\/citations?user=J27lF74AAAAJ&amp;hl=es\">Arizbeth P\u00e9rez<\/a> from Universidad de La Salle, alongside undergraduate and graduate students. Together, they\u2019ve developed a project to create advanced oxidation reactors that use waste from the metal casting industry to clean polluted water effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this circular economy approach, <strong>waste from one industry becomes the raw material for another, in this case, ensuring clean water for communities.<\/strong> \u201cWhat we\u2019re doing is using waste to treat waste,\u201d P\u00e9rez explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"El potencial de los hongos para limpiar el agua\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OKfkhnRUGxc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An Advanced Oxidation Reactor for Polluted Rivers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea took shape when Alfaro engaged with a steel foundry company seeking sustainable uses for its waste. This waste material is known as <strong>slag<\/strong> and consists of <strong>small rock-like particles rich in metallic oxides<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor them, it\u2019s a byproduct. But for us, it\u2019s a resource we can repurpose to boost chemical reactions that clean water,\u201d Chairez says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>reactor they designed consists of a glass container with an internal column packed with slag. Contaminated water is added, along with ozone<\/strong> \u2014a gas made of three oxygen atoms\u2014to trigger an oxidation reaction that breaks down organic pollutants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Combining ozone and metallic oxides amplifies the reaction, making the water-cleaning process even more effective. \u201cBoth ozone and the oxides are highly reactive, so they <strong>target organic matter or pharmaceuticals and destroy them<\/strong>,\u201d P\u00e9rez explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent study, the team tested their reactor on water contaminated with bezafibrate, a medication used to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Their system removed 90% of the drug from the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re also working with common pharmaceuticals like acetaminophen and certain contraceptives,\u201d Alfaro notes. The researchers have even developed a machine-learning algorithm to monitor whether the chemical reaction effectively eliminates the targeted contaminants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis way, we\u2019re not left in the dark about our process\u2019s efficiency,\u201d Chairez adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><picture>\r\n                <source srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/polluted-rivers.webp\" type=\"image\/webp\">\r\n                <img decoding=\"async\" width=\"675\" height=\"852\" src=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/polluted-rivers.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-166884\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/polluted-rivers.png 675w, https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2025\/01\/polluted-rivers-238x300.png 238w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/>\r\n            <\/picture><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>As Simple as a Smartphone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond its role in circular economy practices, the reactor prevents further environmental harm. Foundry slag, when left exposed to the elements, can leach toxic substances into the soil and groundwater during rainstorms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor now, we\u2019ve tested it in the lab using water with just one specific contaminant to measure the process\u2019s effectiveness accurately,\u201d P\u00e9rez explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next steps involve testing the reactor with more complex contamination mixtures and samples from polluted rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an ideal future, their work could lead to affordable floating water-cleaning modules powered by solar panels. These devices could be deployed in rivers or treatment plants, helping tackle water pollution directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs researchers, our role is to act as catalysts so that companies interested in water treatment can take our \u2018recipe\u2019 and apply it,\u201d Chairez says. \u201cThe goal is to make it so simple that it becomes independent of us\u2014something as accessible as a smartphone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Planting the seeds to tackle humanity\u2019s biggest challenges is the heart of this team\u2019s mission. \u201cThis is just the beginning,\u201d Alfaro says. \u201cWater is the future, and we must find new ways to protect it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Were you interested in this story?
