{"id":167398,"date":"2025-01-23T11:33:39","date_gmt":"2025-01-23T17:33:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=167398"},"modified":"2025-02-20T15:14:29","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T21:14:29","slug":"nanomedicine-and-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/biotechnology\/nanomedicine-and-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"Nanotaxis to the Rescue: How Nanomedicine Could Transform Diabetes Treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Treating metabolic diseases \u2013such as diabetes or dyslipidemia\u2013 is one of many challenges that modern medicine faces, <strong>but nanomedicine could help make drugs that are more effective<\/strong> and cause fewer side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This branch of medicine consists of using nanometric systems to transport molecules \u2013such as drugs or medical devicies\u2013 <strong>within the human body<\/strong> to treat diseases or perform medical procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe nanometer scale is <strong>a thousand times smaller than a human hair<\/strong>,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/research.tec.mx\/vivo-tec\/display\/PID_188570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Omar Lozano<\/a>, leader of the <a href=\"https:\/\/tec.mx\/en\/research\/institute-obesity-research\/bioengineering-medical-devices-unit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bioengineering and Medical Devices Unit<\/a> at the <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/institute-for-obesity-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institute for Obesity Research<\/a> at Tec de Monterrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike common medicine, nanomedicine offers many advantages, such as designing drugs<strong> to be directed only towards the organ <\/strong>that is going to be treated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we have a headache and take a drug, only five or 10% will reach our brain, <strong>the rest is lost in the body<\/strong>,\u201d explains Lozano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being able to direct a drug towards a specific organ or tissue not only ensures maximum effectiveness, it also reduces side effects by not leaving residues in other organs. In addition, it is possible to control when a drug is released and at what speed, which can result in l<strong>ower doses being required for the treatment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As if that were not enough, drugs or <strong>molecules that are easily degraded<\/strong> can also be protected so that they reach their desired target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To <a href=\"\/en\/science-communication\/nanotechnology-for-treating-obesity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">treat metabolic diseases<\/a>, the promise is that nanomedicines will be more effective and reach the cells of the most compromised organs and tissues, <strong>such as the pancreas or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.2147\/IJN.S467909\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">adipose tissue<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"C\u00f3mo detectar la diabetes con Inteligencia Artificial\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yWnLVYeQeCw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Subtitles are available in English.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Nanotaxi<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, nanomedicine consists of a <a href=\"\/en\/infographics\/medicinal-nanoparticles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nanometric system<\/a> \u2013which is usually a sphere, but can have other shapes\u2013 made of different materials, such as biopolymers, clays or metallic particles. The <strong>drug or medical device to be delivered is placed inside <\/strong>the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure that it reaches a specific organ, ligands or antibodies which <strong>recognize only the receptor of a specific cell<\/strong> are placed on the surface of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe place a sort of <strong>biological GPS<\/strong> so that when it reaches the organ we want, it delivers the drug,\u201d says Lozano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, using chemical synthesis they can design it so that when it clicks with the cellular receptor, there is a <strong>conformational change in the system and then the drug is released<\/strong>. This allows the release to happen in a controlled manner, perhaps at a specific time or during a certain period of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can also include a fluorophore or another molecule that reacts to light to <strong>trigger the release of the drug<\/strong>,\u201d says Lozano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their laboratory, they named this system<strong> nanotaxi<\/strong> and have begun to apply it to the treatment of different diseases, including diabetes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of them is a nanosystem aimed at the pancreatic islets, <strong>which are groups of cells in the pancreas that include the beta cells that produce insulin<\/strong>. In diabetes, the immune system destroys beta cells, slowing down the production of insulin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith our system, we will be able to <strong>help release insulin in a regulated way<\/strong>,\u201d says Lozano. \u201cWe recently submitted a patent application.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are also working on a system that is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1999-4923\/16\/8\/1017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">activated by light<\/a> to support <strong>the treatment of <a href=\"\/en\/health\/artificial-intelligence-and-breast-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breast cancer<\/a><\/strong>, especially the one that arises in relation to obesity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Future Challenges of Nanomedicine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, there are already several <strong>nanomedicines on the market<\/strong>. The clearest example is a powerful anticancer drug called Doxil. This is composed of liposomal doxorubicin, which has a powerful effect against tumors. However, <strong>this molecule is also toxic to the heart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUsing nanomedicine they encapsulated the drug and <strong>managed to reduce the side effect on this vital organ<\/strong>,\u201d says Lozano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there are already some drugs of this type, nanomedicine still faces various challenges in order to reach its potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of them is to make the targeting of the drugs is really efficient, because <strong>in terms of design <\/strong>there is still an area of \u200b\u200bopportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, achieving that the <strong>effect is drastically different<\/strong> from the drugs that are already available has been more complicated than it seems. \u201cThe important thing is that it really feels different for the user,\u201d says the expert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the future, in the field, they are looking for systems to be created with <strong>materials that are not only biocompatible and biodegradable<\/strong>, but that the particles in which they decompose in can benefit the human body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<strong>They could be created from iron oxide<\/strong> so that when it breaks down, a small infusion of iron is given to the body,\u201d explains Lozano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, it will be important to work hand in hand with doctors because they are the ones who have direct contact with patients and <strong>understand their needs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Lozano, within five to ten years, <strong>nanomedicines will become more common <\/strong>and will be part of the efforts to improve the quality of life for people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are trying to lay the foundations for the <strong>next generation of drugs<\/strong>,\u201d says Lozano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Were you interested in this story?
