{"id":167781,"date":"2025-02-17T14:15:32","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T20:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/?p=167781"},"modified":"2025-02-17T14:22:23","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T20:22:23","slug":"diabetes-may-speed-up-the-rise-of-antibiotic-resistant-bacteria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tecscience.tec.mx\/en\/health\/diabetes-may-speed-up-the-rise-of-antibiotic-resistant-bacteria\/","title":{"rendered":"Diabetes May Speed Up the Rise of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A study by microbiologists at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine found that people with <a href=\"\/en\/tag\/diabetes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diabetes<\/a> mellitus are more likely to develop infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research, published in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/journal\/sciadv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Science Advances<\/a><\/em>, reveals how the microbial environment in people with diabetes promotes resistance mutations\u2014and suggests new strategies to counteract this growing threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em>\u2014a leading cause of infections and deaths linked to antibiotic resistance\u2014is also the most common bacterial infection among diabetic patients. This chronic disease impairs blood sugar regulation and weakens the body&#8217;s ability to fight infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe observed that antibiotic resistance emerges much faster in diabetic models than non-diabetic models of the disease,\u201d said Brian Conlon, an associate professor in UNC\u2019s Department of Microbiology and Immunology and co-author of the study published this week in <em>Science Advances<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conlon says, \u201cthis interaction between bacteria and diabetes may be a key factor in the rapid evolution and spread of antibiotic resistance we\u2019re witnessing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Cient\u00edficos del Tec analizan secreciones de rana mexicana por su potencial para curar infecciones\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hymqApaqPPQ?start=11&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How diabetes fuels resistance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Diabetes leads to high glucose levels in the blood, which feeds <em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em> and allows it to multiply faster. At the same time, a weakened immune system makes it harder to eliminate bacteria, giving them free rein to grow unchecked. The larger the bacterial population, the greater the chances of resistance mutations emerging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conlon and Lance Thurlow, professors of microbiology and immunology at UNC, used a mouse model to investigate how diabetes affects antibiotic effectiveness. They infected diabetic and non-diabetic mice with <em>S. aureus<\/em> and treated them with rifampin\u2014an antibiotic known for quickly triggering resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Diabetes and antibiotic resistance: What the study found<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After just five days of treatment, the results were striking: rifampin had little effect in diabetic models. When researchers analyzed the samples, they found that the bacteria had developed resistance, with infected tissue harboring over 100 million resistant bacteria. In contrast, no resistant bacteria were detected in the non-diabetic mice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most surprising finding was how quickly resistance emerged: within just four days, resistant bacteria took over the infection in diabetic mice. However, when researchers administered insulin to lower blood glucose levels, they saw a sharp decline in bacterial growth and resistance mutations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cControlling blood sugar is crucial,\u201d Conlon said. \u201cWhen we gave insulin to the mice, their blood sugar levels normalized, and we didn\u2019t see this rapid emergence of resistant bacteria.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, Conlon and Thurlow plan to expand their research to human patients\u2014both diabetic and non-diabetic\u2014and investigate resistance in other bacteria, including <em>Enterococcus faecalis<\/em>, <em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa<\/em>, and <em>Streptococcus pyogenes<\/em>. They also aim to determine whether other vulnerable groups, such as chemotherapy patients or organ transplant recipients, face a heightened risk of antibiotic-resistant infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Antibiotic resistance remains a global concern, as resistant bacteria spread through the air, contaminated surfaces, and food.
